Rossignol Sickle Ski

July 18, 2012

I can't tell you the exact weight but I can recommend this ski for touring. It has Rossignol's WRS (weight-reduction system) which basically consists of using lighter source materials in the structure of the ski. It's not a heavy ski, not a beast of a ski by any means, but definitely stable while having a fun and lively flex pattern. Remember, if the ski is constructed too light it won't ski very well (unless it's made of carbon fiber) because you lose stability and dampness when you go ultralight. This ski is a perfect balance of lightweight-minded construction while still having enough meat to it to ski properly. I highly recommend it for touring, general west-coast resort use, and backcountry booters. Hope that helps!

Go for the 180cm. It may seem a bit long at first but you will get used to them, and your technique will probably improve from it! You'll get more float and stability out of the longer length as well.

Volkl Gotama Ski

July 9, 2012

The 178 Gotama is probably plenty long for you - if you're 5'9", a 178 will be just about head height. The 186 might give you maneuverability issues in the trees. At your size, I'd only go 186 if you're planning to do lots of straightlines and minimal turning.

As far as your other options go, the Kung Fujas and Shoguns are excellent all-mountain skis for the west coast. I'd avoid the Czars, though, as they are more freestyle specific and less practical for the all-mountain use you described above.

Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Nano Dry Sack

July 9, 2012

I use a 20L to carry a highly compressed sleeping bag, pad, thermal base layers, and a few other misc items, with plenty of room to spare, so I think the 20L could handle your two sleeping bags and some clothes. You could go for the 35L to be on the safe side - if you don't fill it up, the extra material rolls up into the top so it shouldn't take up too much extra room.

MSR SweetWater Microfilter

MSR SweetWater Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2012

I have used the Sweetwater purifier extensively while backpacking throughout Utah. It works great in the swift rivers and high alpine lakes of the Uintas and also the trickling creeks and remote waterfalls of Coyote Gulch and Dark Canyon. On average I can efficiently pump about 3 liters in 10 minutes after a fresh cleaning. You need to clean it about once every 9 liters or so. Its easy to clean, easy to store, easy to pack up, and easy to carry. Five stars and I highly recommend this thirsty backpacker's best friend!

I don't think the carbon is related to the taste. In my experience the purified water tastes about as good as the source. For example, swift moving mountain creek water tastes amazing.

Line Prophet 98 Ski

July 8, 2012

I don't have one on-hand to measure for you, but I'm fairly certain Line is one of the "truer" brands when it comes to reporting length. The "shorter" brands are Rossignol and as of last season K2. If you really want to know the straight tape pull length of the 172 you can chat in to a Gearhead and they could probably research it and email you back!

Nordica Patron Ski

July 7, 2012

These skis have pretty dramatic tip and tail rocker so they are going to ski shorter than they measure. I'd say go right for the 193cm, unless you plan to go with the AT binding and do a lot of touring, in which case you probably want to cut down on weight and improve maneuverability and would thus go with the 185cm.

Volkl Kiku Ski - Women's

July 7, 2012

Its true that skis with rocker/early rise tend to ski a little shorter than they measure, since they have less active edge. If you're an aggressive skier you probably would have been fine on the 170cm, but I don't think you're doing too bad on the 162cm. In my opinion, this is one of the best women's-specific skis out there for aggressive female skiers.

Smith Phase Goggle - Women's

July 7, 2012

Yes. Pretty much all Smith goggles have interchangeable lenses, including this model. This goggle comes with one lens, and you have a couple of options. Your best two choices are the Sensor Mirror and the Ignitor Mirror. Sensor is better for low light, but still works in partly sunny conditions. Ignitor is better for sunnier days, but is still universal enough to work when it's overcast. Hope that helps!

ExOfficio Bugsaway Halo Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

ExOfficio Bugsaway Halo Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 7, 2012

I just got out of the Uintas from a four day backpacking trek with this shirt. I used it as my primary day-time top. It is a dream come true for the type of shirt I like to wear while backpacking or even just day hiking: two velcro chest pockets for storing map, compass, snacks, camera. Snap buttons for easy on/off and opening the chest up when it gets really hot. Sleeves can roll up easily when its warm and have a little snappy loop to keep them rolled up. Collar can be popped for extra bug/sun protection. Material is extremely soft, light, quick-drying, and legit bug-proof. Didn't get a single bug bite through this material the entire trip, even when I was hanging out next to a high alpine lake infested with mosquitos and biting flies. This shirt layers nicely too, with a base layer underneath and a synthetic puffy and/or rain coat on top when temps drop/rain happens. This shirt is now my go to for every hiking trip. I plan to wear it until it falls apart (and it seems durable, so it shouldn't happen for a long time) and then replace it with the same model. Five stars, highly recommended!

Great for High Alpine

ExOfficio Nio Amphi Pant - Men's

ExOfficio Nio Amphi Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 7, 2012

I got these recently and just finished a four day packpacking trip in the Uintas. I used these as my day-time bottom layer on top of compression shorts. When it was hot I rolled them up capri style, but for the most part it was cooler/raining so I kept them rolled down. Material was extremely light, soft, quick-drying, and bug-proof which made wearing them awesome. Range of motion was slightly limited when wearing them capri-style but it was acceptable, and worth not having to bring shorts and feeling like I wanted to switch between pants and shorts. At night I threw my thermal legging base layer under these and they worked great. I highly recommend these for any high alpine type hikes where you will see cooler temps. I wouldn't wear them in the desert as there's nothing better than shorts when its that hot out during the day. Smaller detail features like the super durable button, built in webbing belt, and many pocket options are icing on the cake. FYI, I'm 6'2" 210 lbs waist size 36 and I bought a size Large which fit just perfect with a bit of tightening on the built in belt.

I use a 20L model to carry my 40 degree bag, sleeping pad, base layers, insulating layer, beanie, and gloves, and I still have a little extra room in the top, and it still fits horizontal across the bottom of my 80L backpack.

My go-to park ski

Rossignol Storm Ski

Rossignol Storm Ski

Rating for this product: 5 July 2, 2012

I'm 6'2" 210 lbs and run this ski in a 180cm. I have two pairs of them, both center mounted. For a bigger guy like me the 92mm underfoot helps with stability when landing and gives me a nice platform when sliding rails. These skis are light and agile. They spin and flip nicely and are generally forgiving on washouts. Rossignol makes some of the best flex patterns in their twin tip skis, and the flex on these is great - generally poppy and energetic, offering solid rebound energy in turns and particularly good pop off the tips and tails when you really put your weight into them. I can tame dog these off basically anything. Bonus points for the hilarious fat Captain America eating a turkey leg graphic (graphics by one of the artists over at www.spacejunk.tv ).

The one negative complain I have about these is sidewall durability. While overall topsheet/lamination durability is solid, I did manage to cleanly tear a one inch chunk out of the sidewall, directly underfoot. This was definitely my fault from hitting a rock, but the odd part was I cleanly ripped out sidewall only, leaving the topsheet and also the edge perfectly intact where the impact occured. In my mind this seems like Rossi used low quality sidewall material in the construction of the ski. My solution was to actually transplant a spare piece of sidewall material onto the ski and then screw/epoxy it into place.

Overall, these skis rock and I highly recommend them to larger sized park skiers.

Patagonia Nano Puff Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

July 2, 2012

I use a layer similar to this in exactly the way you described. As a midlayer under my waterproof shell, a hooded midlayer is useless and gets in this way. This is because I always run with a beanie, and my shell has a hood of its own (that is also waterproof and thus more useful). Bonus tip - when you go to bed you can ball up your puffy midlayer and use it as a pillow!

The North Face Agility Short - Men's

July 1, 2012

Here's the best I can do without actually touching the item: according to the North Face performance wear catalog, these shorts feature one "zip pocket" and also "hand pockets". In my mind, this implies that this zip pocket is a third and is thus probably located in the back. In the catalog picture, there is a smooth seam that moves up from the hips over the back to the tailbone, where a zip pocket could easily be concealed. Hope that helps!

DC Court Graffik Skate Shoe - Girls'

July 1, 2012

Yeah I don't think that's a good idea. Things shrink mainly if they're cotton and then exposed to lots of heat from a high setting on a tumble dryer. With this shoe, you have rubber, suede, and leather. If you try to use the drier trick, either nothing will happen, or you will warp or ruin the shoe, particularly the suede. I wouldn't risk it. If you bought them from Backcountry.com you can set up a return by calling 1-800-409-4502. Or just resell them to a friend!

Classic Dynastar

Dynastar Legend 85 Ski

Dynastar Legend 85 Ski

Rating for this product: 4 July 1, 2012

This is a well-balanced all-mountain mid fat. At 85mm underfoot you have stability and moderate float in all conditions. These are barely rockered, with just a touch allowing the tips to pivot a bit and make turn initiation easier in cruddy snow. Of all the skis claiming "rocker" out there these probably have the least, though. In my mind its a traditional camber ski. They are fairly stiff and quite damp, so they don't chatter at speed. They have a good amount of sidecut so they are easy to turn, but can still hold their own if you're going fast. This is the recipe for the classic Dynastar model of ski. Next year this ski will be reintroduced as the Cham 87, which will be very similar, only with more pronounced tip rocker, slightly increased waist size (from 85mm to 87mm), and a different topsheet graphic. More great stuff from Dynastar!

Dynastar Legend 94 Ski

July 1, 2012

The "Legend" name has been retired and now all of the Legend skis have an equivalent model "Cham" (short for Chamonix, the biggest, baddest ski area near where Dynastars are actually designed and made in the Mont Blanc Valley in France). The mildly rockered 2011-12 Legend 94 is getting and update and will be the Cham 97 for 2012-13. It has significantly more tip rocker, a slightly wider waist (from 94mm to 97mm) and of course a new topsheet graphic, but the overall construction is very similar (it will still have wood core 3D construction and similar sidecut). I had an opportunity to test the entire Cham line (Cham 87, Cham 97, Cham 107, and Cham 127), and I would say it is an improvement over the already good Legend series. So what you get next year from Dynastar will be even better!

Volkl Bridge Alpine Ski

You'll be fine on the 179. The longer ski will give you more stability and it will make you a better skier as you adapt to the length. Plus the ski has mellow rocker so it will "pivot" a bit into turns, making it ski a bit shorter than it looks.

Billabong Influence Board Short - Men's

Billabong Influence Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2011

These board shorts are colorful like the crowd at the local swimming pool. They also have a nice "look at me" aesthetic to draw attention to my awesome diving board moves as well as my belly hair. I am 6'1" 210lbs and got them in a 36 which fits just right, achieving the "relaxed fit" look without going into plumber mode. The material feels nice and has a stretch component, which is pretty cool and dries out fast (duh). Overall I would strongly recommend these, just don't get them in the same color as me and show up at the pool when I'm there or you'll get challenged to a diving board throwdown.

Style, Comfort, & Utility!

Volcom Research Pant - Men's

Volcom Research Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

I got these in blurred brown in XXL. First of all the print is tight and looks really good. You can pull one of the four colors out for a solid jacket match.

These pants are not insane Ronin team fit baggy but are pretty close, which is what I was looking for (I'm about 6' 1" and 200 lbs and they are legit BAGGY on me). Even though they are huge these pants have a nice waist tightening velcro mechanism that keeps them barely on my ass but not falling off for that gangster fit and comfort.

Additionally, these pants feature Volcom's zip-fit system, which lets you zip the bottom back half of a Volcom jacket powder skirt to the rear top of the pants, basically sealing your butt off from snow. Which is awesome. The benefits of a one piece in two modular pieces!

The fabric itself has a nice feel too it, a bit more cloth-like than traditional gore-tex or imitation gore-tex, but still has 10K waterproofing. Also lots of vents and pockets add to the function of these pants.

Overall I am extremley pleased with these pants and hope you will be too!
