MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's
November 22, 2010
Yes, it comes with a stuff sack for packing. Temperature rating, on the other hand, is very relative. I have worn mine down below 0 degrees F here in dry-as-a-bone Utah and been fine walking around. Under a waterproof shell, you could conceivably be comfortable in even lower temps. But comfort depends on your own metabolism, wind, humidity, activity level, etc. so please take that into account.

DAKINE Heli Pro DLX 16L Backpack - 1000cu in
October 11, 2010
Tyler is incorrect. The Heli Pro DOES HAVE a dedicated snow tool pocket with room for your shovel and sleeves for your shovel handle and probe. It is the lower exterior pocket in the picture. While I would not recommend this pack for extended touring, it is a great choice for gate-accessed backcountry laps, in-bounds hiking, cat skiing, or any day on the resort that presents a high avalanche risk.

DAKINE Heli Pro DLX 16L Backpack - 1000cu in
October 11, 2010
Sorry, but contrary to Tyler's answer this bag DEFINITELY DOES have ski and snowboard carry built in. Ski carry is diagonal, with a retractable wire loop at the lower right corner of the pack and a clip strap at the top left. While it's not the best carry system out there, it works fine for short hikes and fits fat skis without any issues. For touring I would recommend a bigger pack with internal support and 'A-frame' carry capability. As for your size question, I would recommend the 16L.

Bern Watts Hard Hat Helmet w/Knit Liner
July 26, 2010
Chris, here's the easy answer: take out the liner. With the Brock version just get a thin helmet liner to cover your ears, and Crowbars will fit right up under the brim as a result. Note: this is with the strap going OUTSIDE the helmet. In the EPS version, take the liner out and wear a beanie underneath with the goggle strap inside the helmet. Trust me.

If you're skiing tight trees, the 182 might be a lot of ski for someone your size. Rossignol FKS 180 Ski Binding
February 24, 2010
Not a stupid question at all. Short answer: they are VERY MINIMALLY adjustable, but basically only to tweak forward pressure. Long answer: the Pivot heel has a great release function, but it relies on centering the heel of your boot on top of the rotating baseplate, which is fixed to the ski. Moving the heel of your boot would change the axis of rotation, which is bad news for your knees, so Rossi makes the binding largely non-adjustable.

Rossignol FKS 180 Ski Binding
February 24, 2010
To answer your first question, the lift kit isn't sold separately. Second answer: the shims don't attach to the ski, they are held down by the binding baseplate and the mounting screws. Third answer: unfortunately, Rossignol is no longer distributing the Pivot baseplate/brake assembly by itself. They will replace the baseplate/brake mechanism on the new FKS heels, but only if you send the whole heel in to the service center. If you have an older Pivot binding, you're out of luck because of the 2-year warranty. It's a sore point with many; sorry to bear bad news.

Scarpa Spirit 4 Alpine Touring Boot
January 11, 2010
The Spirit 4's may click into alpine (ISO DIN) bindings, but skiing in them is a bad idea. The rockered Vibram sole and thin toe are not designed to meet ISO DIN release specs, and thus you run the risk of pre-releasing or staying locked in during a twisting fall. You should use either Dynafit bindings, AT bindings like Naxo or Fritschi, or the Marker Duke or Baron with the toes adjusted to fit an AT sole.

Canada Goose Expedition Down Parka - Men's
December 3, 2009
LYNN, the fur does not come off. This is truly an expedition-ready garment and the fur is not a fashion statement as with many other fur-trimmed parkas. It's designed to keep windblown snow out of your eyes when the tunnel hood is fully deployed, and to keep your breath from freezing on your face and causing frostbite in sub-zero Fahrenheit weather. Hope this info helps with your decision!

Canada Goose Expedition Down Parka - Men's
December 3, 2009
Jim, I'd suggest a polypropylene baselayer bottom, then expedition-weight fleece pants and a waterproof, windproof shell pant that's durable enough to withstand your work. This is a VERY, VERY warm jacket, so up top you ought to be fine with baselayer and a fleece shirt or wool sweater over that, depending on the day's forecast. The polypro underwear will keep your skin dry should you start to move or sweat, and staying dry helps your body to regulate its temperature. On your feet, I'd recommend the Sorel Caribou or another pac boot with a thick, hunting-style wool sock, and for your hands, I'd recommend a pair of trigger-finger expedition mitts or heavily insulated leather work gloves like the Kinco 901 (Google them). Good luck.

Canada Goose Expedition Down Parka - Men's
December 3, 2009
This is not a lightweight or packable jacket. It's heavily insulated and the fabric is thick and durable, making it the kind of garment you'd wear for slow to stationary activities in extreme cold. Think "Research Scientist at the North Pole" rather than mountain climber. It won't fit in anything smaller than a mid-sized duffel bag, even balled up as small as possible.

Rossignol S7 Barras Ski
November 10, 2009
The JJ is lighter and shorter than the S7, with lower camber in the tip and tail and a center mount. The JJ's tail is also fatter and slightly stiffer, making for a ski that lands and rides switch better. The S7 is very directional, with a pinned, raised tail and generous rocker in the tip, but it's slightly heavier and longer. I'd say if you are seeking a new-shape bc jib ski for spins and switch riding, go with the JJ. If you ski mostly forwards and you want to charge a bit harder, go with the S7. No doubt about it, they are both great skis. Tough call.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's
August 17, 2009
I'm almost EXACTLY your size, at 5'10" and 165#, 40 inch chest and 32in waist. Here's my advice: if you want to wear an insulated-fill piece underneath, get the Large (I wear a size M Siphon Primaloft under my size L 2.0, fits perfectly). If you want to wear baselayer and maybe a thin fleece midlayer, get the Medium. Not sure if you're asking about weight or temperature in your second question, but I would say the 2.0 is a great choice for hiking the Rockies, period.

Freestyle USA Shark Classic Sport Watch
June 29, 2009
Evanster's answer is a tad confusing (and partly wrong) so let me clear it up. The pink on the Cyan shark is a paler pink, not a "hot" pink like the pink and black, but also not salmon. Still looks awesome though, in my opinion. As for it being a girl's watch, I'd say the Shark is unisex. The Shark Mid is smaller, more of a "girl" size; if you are petite I would definitely recommend the Shark Mid.

The Punisher in the same length will ski shorter and looser, due to the twin tip tail. The Prophet 100's are stiffer but they are a little more floaty because they are wider. Surprised the 888 didn't hold for you on hardpack; it's what they do best. You say 70/30 groomers/pow, but you need more float and crud performance? I'd step up to a longer length in this ski.

The Permafrost has Windstopper behind the face fabric, which makes it a better outer layer in bad weather. The Alpine Light's face fabric is ripstop nylon, making it lighter and more breathable for layering but not quite as wind-resistant when worn alone. Wind aside, the fill weight (4oz) and fill power are the same, so it's more a question of purpose. Hope that helps.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's
March 30, 2009
Not sure which Siphon you're referring to, but the stretch in the Stoic 2.0 is pretty minimal; about 2" of stretch across the shoulders under reasonable tension. Definitely enough to enhance mobility, but not stretchy like a fleece or a one-ply stretch-woven softshell. It is essentially a hardshell that "flexes" throughout to prevent that awful binding feeling when you move around.

Canada Goose Expedition Down Parka - Men's
November 9, 2008
Here are the directions, straight from the Canada Goose website: Down-Insulated:When your down-filled parka requires cleaning, it is important that you take it to a dry cleaner and that you do not machine wash it. Machine washing your parka will void the warranty. If your parka has a removable fur option, remove the fur ruff before dry cleaning. If you have a small stain on your parka, another option is to spot-wash the parka with a bleach-free detergent and water. The Expedition Parka's ruff is NOT removable. I take mine to a very reputable dry cleaner who uses environmentally safe solvents and has experience with down and fur. Hope that helps.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's
November 3, 2008
That's a relative question, and it depends not only on the ambient temperature, but humidity and wind, intensity of activity, and your own personal metabolic rate and comfort level. That said, with a base layer underneath I'd recommend this for active pursuits (trail running, ski touring) in below-freezing temps, or low-output activities (window shopping, latte wrangling) into the mid 30's if it's a dry climate.

Probably very similar, considering they use very similar fabrics. The Alchemy has Power Stretch panels, which allow more airflow than Windstopper, but the fleece inside the Alchemy is solid while the Venta uses a microgrid. The Venta is also lighter by 5 ounces. "Warmth" is always relative, anyway; for stationary activities in cold weather I would not recommend either jacket. For high output activities in the cold, I'd rather have the Venta.

The hardness (or durometer) of the tire is what those numbers mean. The higher the number (e.g. 60a), the harder and more durable the tire. Lower durometer (e.g. 40a) rubber is super grippy, but wears quickly. The 3C is a triple-compound (hard underneath, 42a center, 40a sides), and the ST is Super Tacky Rubber (40a).
