Pearl Izumi P.R.O. In-R-Cool Short - Men's

Pearl Izumi P.R.O. In-R-Cool Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 June 8, 2011

I'm a pretty big fan of PI. I own 2 pair of the previous version of the PRO shorts, they are very good. When I bought the first pair I just put them on and rode, no problems ever. The chamois is a bit thick but kind of packs down over time and I've never experienced any sort of discomfort from it. Bought the 2nd pair, same deal. Good.

Thought I'd get another set and decided on the latest and greatest. There are some improvements: better waist band, better chamois. They look great and are made as well as you'd expect them to be.

However, something is wrong with these shorts that forced me to send them back. Either they are cutting them smaller, the new material doesn't give as much, or the new panel pattern is just wrong because I found them to be so restrictive that I fought them the whole ride.

After my ride I had seam imprints in my legs for like an hour. My legs were achy which doesn't happen to me, I ride 3-5 x/week.

I called PI and the guy said maybe I had the wrong size. I don't. He also said they may just feel different with the new material but shouldn't stretch out. They do feel different, and to the point that I won't ever put them on again.

They took the joy out of my ride and I believe that pretty much says it all.

Material is too course for me to be worn next to skin. Good sizing. Quality build. Also, for me adding a layer never makes me cooler.

Pearl Izumi Elite 3/4-Zip Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

High quality just like any other PI product. Personally I think they make the best stuff for the money. Fit is more loose than what might be considered traditional for road biking.

SmartWool PhD Cycling Ultra Light Mini Sock - Men's

SmartWool PhD Cycling Ultra Light Mini Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 May 3, 2011

I'm a huge SmartWool fan, buy a pair of socks and they seem to almost last forever.

However, the seem on both sides of the heel pokes out on these socks, does not rest next to your foot so I game them back. Didn't want to risk a blister.

Gore Bike Wear Contest AS Jacket - Men's

Gore Bike Wear Contest AS Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 14, 2011

Good around the torso, nice back drop, but the sleeves look like those worn by a flamenco dancer, huge. The collars of most jackets are a bit tight on me, this one has about 3 inches of extra room, too much. Supper disappointing.

Jinormous

Gore Bike Wear Balance Jacket - Men's

Gore Bike Wear Balance Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 14, 2011

According to Gore's sizing chart I would be a large but in fact, I think if I'd ordered small that would be my size. This is not a fitted jacket, bulky, enormous. If you go go fast at all count on lots of flapping.

Pretty good in terms of design and fit. Color scheme is pretty ugly and the jacket smells like it came out of a chemical bath so if I keep it I'll wash before wearing.

Giordana Silverline Jacket - Men's

Giordana Silverline Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 14, 2011

Giordana advertises like they're stuff don't stink, this jacket does. The shoulder area is fitted to accommodate something the size of hockey shoulder pads. Theoretically I was in-between sizes but a large was enormous, a medium still a bit loose.

Capo Limited Edition Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 March 14, 2011

Beautiful jacket, a bit tight around the collar and just a wee bit too snug but the fatal design flaw is that they stop the wind blocking material below the rib cage so as soon as you start to pedal in cold air it all shoots right up the front of the jacket which pretty much makes it worthless.

Limited range of view and poor 2nd lens color

Giro Manifest Goggle w/Bonus Lens

Giro Manifest Goggle w/Bonus Lens

Rating for this product: 2 February 17, 2011

The new trend, I'm understanding, is to weld two lenses together to try to form a waterproof dual lens system. Seems like a good idea but the weld for these goggles, and others I've seen, like Smith, dramatically obscures the potential field of vision by keeping the weld inside the edge of the frame as apposed to underneath the edge. This technique limits the field of vision by a lot, (can you say tunnel vision). In particular, these goggles are also really expensive compared to the Smith I/O which costs less with a case that will hold all of your spare lenses and protect your frames and the installed lens when they're packed. The 2nd lens, black, given with these goggles also isn't a particularly good lens for "medium" conditions or good snow contrast.I wonder if they're so expensive because they have Carl Zeiss make the lenses so a bunch has to go to them. Food for thought.Lens change system is better, however, than on the Smith I/O.

Vision obscured too much.

Smith Phenom Goggle

Smith Phenom Goggle

Rating for this product: 2 January 29, 2011

I haven't bought goggles for a while so the whole weld two pieces of plastic together to make the lens is new to me. It seems like a good idea but when the inner lens is small and the weld needs to obscure a part of your vision the product becomes worthless to me. I buy goggles to see better not cut off 20% of my vision. The goggles are obviously well made and if the weld was out below the edge of the frame I would own a pair. I wanted to buy the I/Os but found the same thing. I wound up buying a pair of I/O (bigger) on an emergency basis because I needed something for a trip but they are too big for my face if anyone wants them discount (with the case, black frame). The search continues.

Cloudveil Inversion Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

Everything I've run across from Cloudveil is high quality with well considered design and mostly good fit (sleeve length is sometimes extremely long). This vest is a good one, not as puffy and thick if that's what you're looking for.

Very tough to beat for the price. My only minor gripe is that the waist could be a bit longer in the back, so your ass doesn't get so wet if you're not wearing the pants.

Arc'teryx Delta LT Zip Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 28, 2005

Fits well, all the right elements. Feels a bit crunchy in the front. Maybe they put some kind of wind slowing barrier on the front side? This detracts from the feel a bit but it may soften, I haven't had it for very long. Pocket zippers could use some kind of a pull.

Great piece, it fits well and is nice and warm. The only improvement I would add is something more pliable at the end of the sleeves so they can be pushed up further to better regulate temperature.
