Patagonia Lightweight Travel Pack - 1587cu in

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Pack - 1587cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2012

I got this before a 2 week trip to Belize, I have a large camera bag but wanted something I could toss in for all those times when I didn't need the large bag, and this worked perfectly! It was the only bag we carried after we got to where we stayed. It could fit mask, snorkel, snacks, towels, Belikin's, and of course sun screen. I throw it in my checked bag for every trip now. It is really small and lightweight (packs up to about half the size of a Nalgene), so I doubt it would be a good crag bag and I wouldn't shove it full to check at the airport, but thats not what its made for! Cheers!

Finally, Real Bomber Bibs

Trew Gear Trewth Bib Pant - Men's

Trew Gear Trewth Bib Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 7, 2010

I just answered the question comparing these to the Arteryx: bottom line, I picked the Trewth Bib AFTER using both the Stinger and Theta SV...that should say it all! See my comments for more info, will update this after I get more days on them. If they hold up and work as well as I'm expecting, it will be 5 stars!

Trew Gear Trewth Bib Pant - Men's

December 7, 2010

Last year I tried both the Arteryx Stinger and Theta SV, and sent them back. The fabric the Arteryx has is absolutely bomber. I did put them through hell and they held up, but what I didnt like was the features. My two criteria (besides bomber fabric) for a good pair of bibs is pockets and a back that does not let snow in. Hope you don't need to put a map or gloves anywhere in the Theta because you can't, they have virtually no pockets. And the Stinger, which had well placed pockets, had a poor bib design. No matter what I did I couldn't keep my shirt tucked in and snow out. They switched them up a couple years ago to make them "drop seat", but that means the back never stayed up. So this year I'm trying the Trewth Bib. The fabric has a softer feel, but I don't see it getting beat up by trees etc. The fit is not quite as dialed as the Arteryx, but they have pockets, bibs that work as designed and pretty bomber fabric. Just beware, they are most definitely baggier in the lower legs so I wouldn’t recommend them if you plan to use them primarily with crampons as an ice climbing pant etc and not as BC ski or snowboard pant. They do have reinforcements which will work well for summit day, but go with the Arteryx if full time cramponing is your goal. Cheers.

Good So Far

G3 Onyx AT Binding

G3 Onyx AT Binding

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2010

I got these mounted up on a pair of Dynafit Mansulas with a pair of Dynafit ZZeros, somebody made a comment isn't that blasphemous mounting the G3's with so much Dynafit equipment?! But what I like about these over the Dynafits is that I can swap them between different pair of skis. You can get a mounting plate from G3 and swap the same pair of bindings between multiple skis, so instead of having to buy 2 pair of $450 bindings, its one pair and a $70 mounting plate. I have 6 hard days in the resorts and 2 days touring on these, and they have worked well. The only releases I have had were from weird twisting motions, never had an "auto eject" or anything like that. I even took a short 4 foot drop into a crater which threw me as far forward as you can go without your head hitting the skis and they stayed on. 6-8 footers or beating chopped up super heavy Sierra crud at high speed wasn't an issue in the least bit either. I'm no extreme skier, but am 6 ft, 190 lbs and I work my gear pretty hard. My only problem was heavy wet snow packing under the toe piece and making it hard to release manually (beat it with my pole and stomped the ski and the snow came out), but even Dynafits have issues with snow packing in the springs etc. As for touring, I upgraded from a pair of Freerides and it was noticeable lighter and smoother tour! Plus you didn’t hear that annoying clunking noise with every step! And yes, I did use the ability to click in and out of tour mode without removing the ski or skins, Tele mode on a short 35 degree slope to work the terrain isn’t always fun, that’s why I am on Randonee skis!!

Bottom line: No complaints after 8 straight days of hardpack, groomers, heavy Sierra Cement and blower powder on them, and have another 3 days BC this weekend!!=

Nice but slim

Stoic Bombshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Bombshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2010

This jacket seems to have it pretty dialed in....except for the fact that it was a true slim cut! I am 6ft, 180lbs, 34" waist, always wear a Large T-shirt and jacket, but this Large was too slim and the sleeves and torso were too short. This is def not a jacket you are going to be able to layer very thick, I even tried my OR Synth insulated jacket on underneath and it was longer than the Bombshell and lost all loft because of the tight fit.

On the positive side, it seemed to be a very well constructed jacket. The features are nice, I was impressed by how unrestricted the jacket feels, even though it is tight (no binding when moving arms.) My only complaint was that none of the pockets would expand enough to be able to stash a pair of gloves or even a beanie...but hey, the jacket was definitely NOT flapping in the wind when flying down the slopes around Lake Tahoe!

Bottom Line: If you are 5'10" and 160lbs, the large is the jacket for you (esp if you find it on SAC!)

Sweet Paddle

Werner Kauai 2 Piece Paddle

Werner Kauai 2 Piece Paddle

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2003

I got the paddle because I wanted something that was shorter with a fatter blade so I could play in little white water, and it's sweet. It is a powerfull paddle with good weight, in my opinion there's no need to go any lighter (I have the fiberglass version), unless you love dropping another $200 on the carbon fiber one. My buddy got a cheaper paddle and wishes he would have forked out the money for even the "base" performance Werner paddle. It's great, later
