Mr. Robsonís Neighborhood
Mr. Robson discusses double corks and influential riders, gives you the inside scoop on whatís happening in snowboarding, and has words with Aaron Biittner.by Trent Robson
First off, I just want to say thanks! I was stoked to hear from a variety of people after last monthís debut of Mr. Robsonís Neighborhood. When you get emails with sweet lines like, ďSoul is Soul. Money is for Monkeys!Ē and, ďI can't believe you can spin what is good to support v. who is disingenuous. You my friend are a tool tooĒ, how can you not get stoked!
As for who threw the first double cork, voting came down to three riders: JP Walker, Dave Benedek and Mike Michalchuk. JPís was off a backcountry jump in 2003 and Daveís was in a halfpipe around 2004, but the real question was whether Mike actually pulled a double cork back in the day? Mostly he did double flips, but we were emailed footage dating back to í98 of him pulling a double cork in a pipe. Check out Mikeís trick forty-five seconds into the vid:
Now was this really a double cork? Do I really care? Hell No. All I care about is that we all know for a fact that double corks have been a part of snowboarding for over ten years. Take that Christine Brennan.
What does matter about who did the first double cork is that from the beginning there have been riders out there pushing what is possible on a snowboard, and for as long as I remember I idolized many of these people. I will be the first to admit I suck at riding. Yeah, I have been riding for over two-thirds of my life, but I have always been the chubby, out-of-shape kid with no athletic ability. At a certain point I had to accept the fact that I was never going to be one of those special few. But it didnít stop me from wanting to check out every video, read about what the pros were doing, and try to do what they did. Still to this day I probably spend too much time on the Internet watching snowboarding and reading about it. One blog that has me hooked right now is buoloco (Must thank Jeremy for getting me hooked on this site). If you havenít checked it out you must; buoloco features awesome interviews with pros, the media and other industry types.
Both my job and my life in Utah give me the opportunity to run into many of todayís pros, as well as some from the past. These are my neighbors and I want to highlight the ones that get me excited to ride. Hope you feel the same.
