Halloween Powder at The Canyons

by Josh RheaUtah's warm Indian Summer ended abruptly just before Halloween with a massive series of snowstorms, to the dismay of mountain bikers and hikers taking full advantage of an extended season. As much as the BackcountryStore.com staff loves summer, all we have to say about that is: "Nyah-nah!"
The storm came in warm and wet due to a Southwest flow-favoring the grassy slopes of The Canyons, where over 45" of fluff has fallen since October 31. It's made for a pre-season backcountry heyday, and now that the snow has settled, created a bomber base for the rest of the year. Slated to open November 28, this Utah paradise that many of us plunder on weekday powder mornings is arguably the best spot to avoid the hype and crowds clogging other area resorts.
Better yet, The Canyons is offering free skiing in the early season so you can come enjoy the pow with the rest of us. Grab a dirtbag ski buddy or significant other and pay about eighty bucks each at the Sundial Lodge for luxury living and free lift tickets. The Grand Summit Resort Hotel is slightly more (starting at $189/night) for a romantic weekend and powdery turns on 'the Best Snow on Earth.' Ya can't beat it.
