This harness is perfect. My pup is a really strong pulled and this harness keeps him under control. The handle on the top is great when you need to pick him up or help him over a big log. I use it as a harness for him to pull me on my longboard and it is great exercise for him.

This harness is awesome...I always hated when my pup would pull, and it would seem to choke him with his collar. No problem with the webmaster. Pulls me up hills like nothing. His rib cage measured 34in, so I went with the large. Fits just fine. Really easy to adjust.

I researched Ruffwear's website and could not find a single rating on this harness so I personally would not trust it for this use. I would instead recommend the Ruffwear DoubleBack which is rated to 8.9kn (2,000 lb). Just make sure if you go this route that you i) actually doubleback the straps per the instructions and ii) tie your rope to a load-rated loop on the harness.

Rx assistance? This is the BEST Harness, read on....

By:
August 25, 2008

THANK YOU! I have used many Ruffwear products before, but this one is the BEST! My 13 year old lab has been diagnosed with a spinal/ arthritis issue that has severely impacted his mobility. We purchased the web master dog harness '08, and it is FABULOUS! We have three different veterinarians/ and animal hospitals for treating this condition, and other issues, and they are impressed as well. Since using this harness, we've had more than one doctor take it off, and go show it to other clients who need the same support. It's comfortable, easy to put on, and the handle and loop on the back and at the end help me assist my dog at standing and other 'duties' without losing his dignity when he needs assistance. I've recommended it to everyone, AND one Veterinary Hospital is considering keeping it in stock , or at least the info, to recommend to their patients.
Again, I THANK YOU. I give it a 5 star rating because you don't offer 6 stars!

The XXS would work for 13" girth. My dog has a 19" girth, and he wears the XS now, but had an XXS when he was younger and grew out of it. It is very adjustable as well, and I highly recommend this product.

It's the best thing I've ever had

By:
January 7, 2009

Two months ago, I adopted a Bearded Collie. She's 25' tall and weighs 57 pounds, She was a stray, and it didn't take me long to figure out why: She loves being outdoors and she's stubborn. If she doesn't want to go in, or in a certain direction, she'll just stop, and then try to pull out of her collar. I assume that at one point she succeeded and ran off.

I thought that I could cure that by buying her a harness. She quickly figured out that if she laid down on her side, that would take care of that, and it did. I couldn't drag her. She actually slipped the harness twice, and ran off. Fortunately she came back. I literally was at the end of my rope when I found this harness. It has changed my life!

She can't slip out, and if she doesn't want to go in the direction I'm taking her, I just grab the handle and pull. She gets the idea very quickly; it just works beautifully. Moreover, it is so well made, and I just couldn't be happier.

Don't go by your pup's weight. Measure her girth, which is around the widest part of her rib cage. Once you have the measure, check the sizes listed in the product description on the right side of the page. If she fits between two sizes (ex. she measures 28 inches. She could therefore go for either the Small at 21-31 inches or the Medium at 26-36 inches) I'd recommend going with the smaller size for a tighter and more more athletic fit. If she's still growing than maybe go for the bigger size.

Great Dog Harness

By:
November 3, 2009

I have a skinny 60lb lab/hound who LOVES to hike. I got this harness for him (size Medium and he uses it on the tightest settings) recently, and am so glad I did. He's a great hiker, but occasionally is intimidated by steep rocky slopes, or icy spots. When this happens, I just clip a leash to this harness, and pull him right up. Usually he can get his legs in position to help out my efforts, but sometimes I do end up actually pulling him straight up, and the harness works just fine for that. I wouldn't "rappel" him (too risky), but I believe that Ruffwear has recently released a new product that is safe for dog-rappelling, so I would recommend that instead.

All in all, a great product. I get a ton of comments about the harness from other hikers, most of whom have probably bought their own by now!

Great Harness for hiking and service dog

By:
October 3, 2010

I have used these web master harnesses for my dogs for years. They are absolutely the best harnesses I have found considering quality of product and ease of use. The older style harnesses I have are still in perfect shape other than the dog hair, but the new style is even better. I bought new ones for both dogs, and the style improved the ease of fitting as well as the appearance. The harness looks great and is extremely easy to fit and adjust with the straps. It is comfortable and secure. I use the handle on my shar pei rescue's vest when we approach other dogs or any small animals she scents along the trails. I can get a firm grip on her to ensure her naughty shar pei behavior doesn't get her in trouble. I have used it many times to assist her out of a ditch or other place she managed to get into. I use the handle on my service dog's harness to help me when I need his physical assist such as getting up when over tired or up a steep hill. They also give a discount to service dogs. What a great company!

I am looking for a dog harness to use in paragliding. Do you think this harness could be used in paragliding? Is strong enough to sustain the dog? It is tested for some load? How much? If not, do you know some harness that could be better for this end? Thanks & Regards

No!!! Do NOT use this harness to suspend the dog. Ruffwear does makes a strength-rated harness for dogs. It's called the DoubleBack harness. I would contact Ruffwear to verify the DoubleBack harness can be used for a paragliding application.

http://www.ruffwear.com/DoubleBack-Harness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjOuGD3M_Lc

I would think the setup would be something like this ...
Attach the harness using the tie in point (as shown in the video). Instead of tying in with a rope ... attach the harness to the paraglider using a sewn sling (Metolius PAS or Sterling Chain Reactor have loops so you can adjust easy) and two locking carabiners (black diamond quicksilver are cheap and will work perfect for this) opposite opposed.

some improvements

By:
August 19, 2008

I've used the ruff wear webmaster harnesses for a few years now. This model is the first '2008 version' I've tried and I do love a lot about it - the new fabric, brighter color of the red, reflective piping and 'stay put' padding. What I don't like is the lack of cohesion that the older model had. One piece didn't flex and move like this one. However, I still think they're the best harnesses around and am a fan. Dogs can't escape if they 'put on the breaks'. If I never used the old version I would have no complaints but if you can, buy the 2004-2007 version at a deal. Otherwise, and for night/road walkers, this is the way to go!

Comfort and control

By:
July 2, 2011

Great harness! My dog tends to pull a lot and when I switched from a basic harness to this one, there was a noticeable difference in how much better I am able to control her. Since the clip in is at the top of the harness, she doesn't get the leash caught under her legs and it's quick to clip her in if she's off lead and I need to grab her quickly. The handle is also very useful for helping her climb up steep rocks and boulders when hiking. The only drawback is that, for my dog at least, she's not fond of putting the harness on, since it has to go over her head, but once it's on, she doesn't notice it at all.

Has anyone had a dog who used their Ruffwear Web Master Dog Harness

Has anyone had a dog who used their Ruffwear Web Master Dog Harness in the water? Our 12 1/2 yr old Chessie has nerve and muscle degeneration in his rear legs, but he acts as though he is still in the prime of his life. We would love to find an all-in-one product that could go from land to water and allow us to give him the extra hand that he requires from time to time.
Is the fleece removable if it becomes soiled? Is there reason to believe that the harness would become severely water logged? Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

I use this harness when going for short hikes or skins with my Australian Shepherd. The handle is great when there is a snow cat coming (or another hiker/skinner that she doesn't want to socialize with!). My only complaint is that sometimes the straps loosen and slide a bit on her, but she is on the small side of Aussies. Overall, great product, and I would buy another for this purpose.

(On longer hikes/skins, I've been using the Singletrack, which is similar but allows Jibber to carry her own water and leash... and we LOVE it.)

Just like the question about using the harness for paragliding, you have to ask yourself, would you rope in with plastic clips? The best bet would be to contact Ruffwear directly to find out the tensile strength of the clips (assumedly they would be the weakpoint, but then again I'd be doubtful of the strength of any stitching on the nylon webbing either.) As the other answer below states, the vast odds are that while Ruffwear will want to promote the strength of the materials for controlling your dog, they aren't going to sign off on lowering the dog off of a cliff.

Awesome harness

By:
March 28, 2010

This harness has made our walks wonderful instead of wishing they were over before they began. My husky no longer pulls, she walks so nice with no attempt to run. We have tried so many harnesses and none of them compare to this one. Being an active family that loves the outdoors we wanted our dog involved but it was very hard before this. Akylah loves the comfortable belly straps and the snug fit. Every harness we have tried seems to be in between sizes and slide from side to side except for this one. The medium fits nice and tight when adjusted by the 5 adjustment points. The only thing I can say could use some work is that the straps need to be tightened after awhile. They don't just slip lose it happens with movement over a long walk or hike so it shouldn't cause any worry, just be conscious of it and check them at the water stop. The handle is very nice for when we're hiking and akylah needs a little help from us humans. Also if you're looking for a nice comfy leash for your hands check out the Ruffwear knot a leash. Super nice and has a locking carabiner for extra security.

Stairs....no problem

By:
February 7, 2010

I bought this harness in a size small for my 40lb bulldog who has trouble going up and down stairs due to her stumpy legs. Her weight is balance under the harness handle and allows for picking her up without either end of her "sinking" or the harness riding up under her front legs. This lets me assist her and gives her the confidence to tackle the stairs where she was once petrified...my back couldn't be happier too!

Perfect for a puller

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
July 18, 2008

My dog loves to pull and I got this harness to take the stress off his neck and it did the trick. Now when he pulls, it is coming from a central spot on his back and not hurting him at all. This harness fits great, if your dog fits in between sizes I would recommend going a size up because the straps are adjustable and you can always tighten them a bit. Their fleece lining doesn't irritate him and he hasn't tried to squirm his way out of it yet either. Great for everyday walks as well as hikes.

Karen - I hope you already got an answer, but if not...It's easy to use, the front section goes over Cheech's head (looks like a "Y") at the end of this section is a loop that you feed the chest strap through. This places a strap on both front shoulders that is locked in place when you loop the chest strap through it. The strap at the back is just like a belt - nothing looped, but holds it in place. The harness system is the same for their packs, which I use with my weimaraner - Rafe, and very easy to put together. I tried other packs before finding the Ruff Wear product and this is the best out there - Rafe destroyed 3 other packs mainly because they were cheaply built. I love the Ruff Wear pack so much that I'm tempted to buy the harness so I don't have to use the pack all of the time. All of the stress from pulling will be on Cheech's chest/shoulders, not on the neck.Hope this helps...

This harness is not designed to discourage pulling and will actually make it easier for the dog to pull because the weight will be distributed to the shoulders and chest. Look at the similarity to a weight pulling, dog sled or skijoring harnesses which are designed so the dog can pull comfortably. If you have a strong dog that may present a problem for you. There are other harness/collar designs specifically to reduce pulling without choking the dog.
