Reynolds DV3K Clincher Wheelset - 2011 BCS
Wheels can be mysterious things. Because they're made of multiple components and there are the associated variables related to use, it's not surprising that choices are difficult. The Reynolds DV3K Clincher Wheelset looks to simplify things. They utilize all-carbon 46mm deep clincher rims that are light, aerodynamically efficient, and strong enough for 'cross. Better yet, they're attractive in a euro' sort of way, with the top layer made of a high-gloss 3k carbon weave that gives them a look that calls attention to the rim material and complements the bike.
At 46mm, these rims are a great depth. They're aero enough to make a big difference when you're going fast, but still light enough, thanks to the all-carbon rim construction, not to be an impediment when going uphill.
Reynolds straightforward naming conventions make it easy. DV is Deep V, which is their way of saying 46mm deep, deeper than the 32mm Mid V (MV) and shallower than the 66mm Super Deep V (SDV). 3K refers to the 3k carbon weave finish. This rim shares a similar shape with Reynolds' other 46mm rims, with one slight change; the spoke side of the rim is blunter than their other shapes. The rim has Reynolds Vibration Management System (VMS) technology; the lay-up of the carbon fiber was designed to damp road vibrations before they reach the frame and fork. Reducing road vibration might not seem like a big deal, but it will add comfort. This means you can go as fast as usual with less fatigue or go faster with equal fatigue.
As with other Reynolds wheels, the spoke nipples are internal. This makes for a stronger wheel and better aerodynamics. The front wheel has 20 radial DT Revolution spokes laced to a Reynolds hub. The rear wheel has 24 DT spokes laced to a Reynolds hub as well; the 12 non-drive side spokes are radially-laced and are DT Revolutions, the 12 drive side spokes are two-cross and are DT Competitions.
The Reynolds DV3K Clincher Wheelset is Shimano-compatible 700c only and is designed for tube-type clincher tires. You'll get Reynolds Cryo-Blue pads, the only pads Reynolds recommends with their wheels. They also come with rims strips and a set of Reynolds steel-shafted alloy quick release skewers.
All Reynolds wheel owners can buy themselves some extra peace of mind by purchasing Reynolds' two-year damage protection plan. It's called RAP, short for Reynolds Assurance Plan. The insurance means you should have little fear that a crash will ruin your wheel investment. Find out more about it on the Reynolds Cycling site.

Great So Far

Let me preface this by saying I haven't logged thousands of miles with these yet and I'm not a "weight weenie" or professional rider. That being said, I've had absolutely no buyer's remorse. I did a lot of research on wheels before purchasing at Bonktown. For the 50% off price, they are a great value.
The positives: It's a lightweight carbon fiber wheel that isn't so deep that you'll get blown over with a strong Midwestern crosswind. Despite the relatively low spoke count, Reynold's does not have a weight limit on them (I'm 190+ lbs and my coworker who also bought a pair is 240-ish and we've had no problems). If you're like me, you've heard/read a lot about how high-end wheels greatly reduce squat and dampen road vibration -- it's absolutely true. They are touted as being durable enough to use as "everyday" wheels which is how I'm using them -- I'm not serious enough of a rider to spend a ton of money on a "race day only" wheelset. Lastly, you get the benefits of carbon fiber but can stick to the tire mount sytem (clinchers) you are accustomed to.
The drawbacks: I initially didn't like the white decals but they turned out to be great with my bike. While the weight isn't amazingly light, they are less than half of the stock wheels that came on my Madone. In terms of originality, they are factory and, in this respect, I would prefer to have custom wheels made by Ron Huff -- but yet not many people have these. Little things I didn't think about: you'll probably want to buy a new cassette if you're keeping your old wheels and tubes are more expensive due to the need for a longer valve stem.
Conclusion: If they're on Bonktown, it's a great way to get into the higher end wheel market without spending too much -- especially if you made an investment in a carbon fiber bike but are riding stock wheels.
