The zero-BPA Platypus Softbottle can be used over and over again without getting the dirty, musty taste that a lot of hard bottles are known for. It’s also super-light, and can be stored anywhere when empty—just roll it up.
I did use mine until the constant folding caused a weak spot that turned into a hole. I have several, because they are honestly great bottles. The one that broke I had used for three weeks solid, every day at work. I could carry it in my back pocket while I worked. When the bottle is filled, the water maintains a good shape. When the bottle is empty, it can be folded into my back pocket.
Like all reviews before this one, I like that the bottles are collapsible. These are great for ski touring. If it is near your core, you can pull it out and sip without having to worry about frozen drinks. Mine did not fail at a seam, but in the middle of the bottom of the bottle. Weird place to break, but it did see heavy use!
Cheap prices. If your careful you can easily get your money's worth.
I love Nalgenes and I love this bottle, both for different reasons, but this is just such a unique container that there's more to say about it:
well, first off, it's cool. How often do you see people walking around with a squishy pouch of liquid held to their lips? Yea.
I first caught sight of one at a camp I went to, where a counselor was just loving the cool misty flow of dihydrogen monoxide down his throat, and I was loving it too...the thought of having my own! Oddly enough, water seems to be colder in one of these than in a Nalge. Probably due to science.
One very self-evident feature that I cannot leave out of this rant is how it folds up...! it's awesome. Say you're going on a hiking trip where water sources are limited at the start and you hope to resupply at streams as you go. Well, folks, pack down one of these Platypi somewhere in the depths of your pack and it takes up as much room as a nalgene would if it were crushed plastic without dead space. Essentially, it's an extra liter of water you know you can drink without taking up an extra liter of space in your pack. YA platypus, I love you
The threaded cap part is the same as a 2L soda bottle. I think that works out to about 25mm. The actual opening you drink through is obviously a bite-valve though.
These are sweet water bottles. I've only used it for running so far, but I love that its pliable. It makes it easier to hold and run with in my opinion. Would definitely recommend the Hyperflow version if you're using it on the go! Looking forward to testing it out in the snow!
Yes--just don't fill it to the top so that it won't expand when it freezes. These bottles are good for hot drinks also and what I love the most is that they don't absorb the taste of what you are pouring in them.
I like this because as you drink it gets smaller and takes up less space. Nice selection of sizes. Plain and simple you just have to be careful with wear and tear, protect from sharp objects. I like to use the clear version, easy pull and close opening for drinking. Doesn't get any lighter.
This bottle is a perfect addition to the camelback hydration system for bigger longer days or a good replacement if your avy/photo/camp pack doesn't work with a hydration system. I love that it is malleable and can squeeze into tight spaces when your pack is super full and folds down to nothing when you're done. Also cool that it works with the gravity fed filtration system.

How difficult is it to wash the Platy Softbottle? It seems like it would be hard to clean the crevices and since you can't dry the inside with a towel, may cause mold
I've had good luck with a bit of soap and water, shaking it to get all the crevices, using fairly hot water to rinse it out at the end--dries pretty fast if you prop it open. So far, everything's been mold free--and I have the tendency to leave my water bottles in my truck for long periods of time, half filled.
I took the 2.0L SoftBottle with me on a week-long backpacking trip, and I loved having it around. When you stop to camp at night, you just fill the SoftBottle for all your water needs, and in the morning when it's empty you just roll it up and stuff it back in your pack. It rolls up super-small and it weighs almost nothing. Definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear, and it was only $10!
Super convenient and packs real small. Also comes in very handy when my kids use it because the bite valve helps to mitigate spilling. Really great little invention!!

Hi, I bought the softbottle with the hyperflow valve like the ones in the picture. Is there any way to get the Platypus bite valve cover on it? Has anyone done it?
I've already watched the youtube video on the bite valve page. But the attachment is different and when I tried to pull the hyperflow valve off, I ended up pulling off part of the base.
This size is perfect for loading up on water at the base camp (cooking, cleaning, etc) or drinking on the trail ... Its a good size if thats what you are looking for but I'd rather have two 1Liter bottles, but that was looking a little expensive.
I love this water bottle! It's an instant favorite, whether I am hiking about of just running around town. It goes everywhere with me. The top is so convenient compared to say, a Sigg or Nalgene bottle. Plus I feel like I am drinking a giant caprisun or something so bonus points for being fun in addition to functional.
These bottles are great for skiing especially in the resort when you may not have a pack. As you drink the water the bottle gets smaller and the water doesn't slosh around. The 0.5 liter is my go to bottle.
For me, the best part about the "platypus softbottle" is it's flexibilty. My Trew jacket has this big inner-pocket, and the platybottle is able to bend and conform to fit comfortably against my ribs. Plus, being on the inside of my jacket next ot my body, I haven't had a problem with the bottle freezing. so far I've owned 3 or 4 different platybottles in various sizes. Finally, having a bottle that gets smaller and smaller as you drink more water is pretty awesome.
So far i have only experience one problem; one of my bottles developed a pin-hole sized leak inside of my jacket, making for a cold couple of hours. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but is appears that after a good deal of time, and after being folded and rolled up hundreds of times, the plastic in the bottle begins to wear and crack and eventually crack all the way through to the outside. This only happened on the oldest bottle I had, and (of course) I had no problems sending it back to BC to exchange for a new one. So all in all its a cool idea and I would definitly recommend picking up one or two of these for yourself.
i should also add... I wasn't a big fan of the bite-valve type top. The simple screw-off, screw-on lid is my favorite.
Only had it about a month now, but I love it. The plastic is much sturdier than it looks, just need to keep it away from sharp objects (duh), but otherwise a very good, convenient, ultra-portable water bottle. I would like to try the push/pull top though, might make it a tad more easier to drink out of.
I love this bottle for skiing. It is super thin and fits in pockets really well. You barely notice that it is in your pocket. When you crash it does not break your ribs. The bottle is soft and flexible. I have crash a bunch on these and have never had a blow out. The .5L size is the best for skiing. The 1L is a little big in my opinion.
In my opinion, Platypus Softbottles are essential. I use them when I travel to Mexico every summer and take several to give to my friends. I have three in my office refrigerator and I always keep one filled with water on my night stand. Those sold for the purpose of keeping wine fresh are essential. I have every size imaginable. I especially appreciate that you can roll them up when they are empty. Great if you are ecologically minded and disdain throw-away plastic bottles. Get several--you won't regret it! When flying, unroll your Platypus and fill it with water when the TSA personnel allow you through the line.

Bought a couple of the 1L bottles as an alternative to using traditional hydration bladder. Also bought the hydration tube kit that allows you to use these bottles just like a hydration bladder. I like the simplicity and the fact that as bottles they are easy to fill and are collapsible. Stuff them in my pack and use with the hydration tube they are just like my old hydration bladder but better! The only tweak I'd add to improve this system would be a bottle top lanyard like what is seen with some other bottle makers. Would be insanely easy to lose a bottle top and that wouldn't be good!
I'm definitely going to be using this system at the Barkley Marathons later this year representing the Wasatch Speed Goat Mountain Racing Team.
Just right size to put in ski coat pocket. I tape up the bottom to make it less long to fit pocket. Refill on breaks. Easy to use top/ nibble for toddler to senior citizen.
The only thing I'd change about it is that I wish it were more streamlined, and easy to fold when empty so it could easily be put in a pocket. Bought it to carry in my snowboarding coat on the mountain, and it's too big: full or empty (0.5L). Still, a sturdy bottle I'll use other places.
I carried two 2-liter Platypus bottles (along with a single 1-liter Nalgene bottle) on the entirety of my Appalachian Trail thru-hike. I used them every night in camp to carry back water from the water source. During the day, I just folded up the empty bottles and stored them in my pack. But in the rare instances that I needed to carry more than the one liter of water in my single Nalgene, I could fill up one of these and carry it in my pack.
It's not easy to fill up one of these by dipping it in a spring or stream, but if there's water falling from above (ie from a cascade), it'll fill right up. Otherwise, I'd just fill my Nalgene then pour the water into the Platypus. (Or if you're using a filter, just pump directly into the Platypus.)
Do take note that the 2-liter version of this bottle comes with soda bottle-style caps, not as pictured.
These still haven't worn out, even after 2181 miles -- although they are a little dirtier :) Recommended.
Good little bottle. Plastic looks strong. I got the 1L closure and the 2L. They work great. The best part is being able to roll them up when your done to save space.
LOVE these for hiking, biking, camping, backpacking... There is the obvious weight and space savings as you drink and it gets smaller. For a REALLY long and/or hot day, I will fill my 3 liter hydration pack, AND throw in one of these so I have 4 liters total. The only downsides that I have found so far are that I tend to lose the caps (but I'm sure that's more my fault than Platypus'), and if you are backpacking with a Steripen, it does not work with such a small opening. So you still need a wide mouth bottle if you're planning to sterilize with the steripen. One nalgene and multiple platy bottles will do the trick though.
I bought these to use on an upcoming hiking trip hoping to use them and not have to worry about lugging a huge SmartWater Liter size bottle around.
One thing I did mistakenly do when I ordered was not pay attention to the fact that the difference between the $12.95 liter and the $8.95 liter is the lid. $4 seems a bit much for a sport top BUT good news is the SmartWater sport lids fit these bottles perfectly and I know here you can easily get a sport lid 24oz SmartWater for $1 so thats a great deal for a lid that works more conveniently.
The appeal is the light weight, small pack size and the large volume. And all of these things are very true. Mine weighs 1.3 oz empty and packs down smaller than any of my other water containers, and even though it says 2L, it will actually hold more than that. However, I will have to keep an eye on the durability of the actual "bottle". I currently own some of the Nalgene Cantene's and IMO, the Nalgenes are a little more rugged and durable. I have used the Platy on one Backpacking trip in which I carried the bottle rolled up inside my bag and only got it out at camp to haul/store water. When I arrived back home, I noticed some dents and scratched looking spots on the bottle. This is ok for now, but it makes me wonder how it will do in the long run. In comparison, my Nalgene has been used many times in the field and has held up well and is fine. Also, as expected, filling this thing is work, due to the small opening. In comparison here as well, the Nalgene's wide mouth is awesome. I tried filling this bladder in a deep stream with fairly fast moving water and it took a few minutes. I had to completely submerge the bottle a few times, and of course I ended up with cold hands. I would hate to imagine trying to fill this from a shallow water source... So, at this point I am just curious as to how it will hold up on multiple trips. it will be in my pack on trips in which I know there are very reliable sources, at least for a while.
To be honest, I did not know what to think about this bottle until I gave it a try. I was impressed with it right away and bought another. This bottle is so unique, when it is empty you simply fold it up and put it in your pocket. You will get some goofy looks while carrying it around.
***Is it worth it? Honestly, if you are going on a hiking trip and are looking to go light, this shouldn't be your first pick. You can take a couple of 1 Liter aquafina bottles are you are good to go. But if you just like day hiking, then you know how annoying it is to carry around a water bottle after you have finished drinking from it. With this, you can just slip the Platypus in your pocket when you are done with it!
***Why you should get it The best thing about this is how you can roll it up super small. You can throw this in your pack for minimal weight added ... Then when you arrive to your base camp you can go to the creek ONCE and get a ton of water for cleaning, cooking, drinking, sharing, etc.
***Durability The material seems pretty durable and the screw cap seems like a solid fit, so I am expecting this thing to last several years with regular use.
***Price Honestly I cannot understand the price of these things. I understand how a Nalgene bottle or a stainless steel water bottle can be expensive, but I have no idea how they can charge so much for what seems like inexpensive material. There is nothing incredibly innovative about it either. Its just a plastic bag for holding water. Anyways, I would have bought it again despite the price.
***Bottom Line These things are pretty cool and there is really nothing like them out there, so pony up the money and get one!
This type of water bottle is great, I love it and use it all the time!! I bought the .5L and the 1L bottles, one with the screw cap closure and one with the bite valve cap so i can switch the caps depending on the use. It's great how light and packable they are, you can roll them up and stash them almost anywhere in your pack and almost forget you have them. Even when they have fluid in them they still conform to your pack better than a hard container.
I have the tangerine/closure 1L bottle. I love it! Its so handy to be able to stash it anywhere and pull it out and have a water bottle handy. In the past I had problems with Nalgene and other water bottles falling out of the side holder on my backpack, but not with Platy. It stays put. I also feel more comfortable putting this in the side pocket of my pack. I know I put a lot of pressure on my pack and I feel like Platy just fits in the pocket of my Osprey Ariel better than a Nalgene. Plus its lightweight and takes up less space and no sloshing around.
I thought this bottle was the answer to my problems. I wanted to carry water but didn't want bulk. It is true that the bottle gets smaller as you drink it, but the 1L size is way too big to carry around. The bottle is too wide and the edges are too abrupt to hold it for very long periods of time. The nozzle on top is also way too long and takes up way too much room. It does hold water, you can drink out of it, so I won't give it less than 3 starts...maybe the .5 liter option would be better.
So I got tangerine 1L closure platypus. I was a little confused with the other reviews and options listed for the cap of this product. First, I got the 'closure' one. Word of caution. This means a basic screw top like the top of a plastic soda bottle. So I returned it for a 'push/pull'. I was once again confused if I was going to get the push/pull top in the sliver image or the hyper flow cap in the others. To my relief - it was the blue/clear top in the other pics and not the pure white in the sliver pic. I love this product. So helpful and compact when not full.
Sooooooo convenient!! Takes up sooooooo little space, they're goin' with me to Europe this summer. Use them in the car. My husband thinks he can't live without his Platy now that he's got one!!!
