Patagonia Wanaka Down Jacket - Men's

Item # PAT2171

To fight off rosy-nose temps, insulate yourself in the Patagonia Men’s Wanaka Down Jacket and enjoy the warming power of 600-fill goose down. Winter is war, and the Wanaka fights right back with warm-but-weightless insulation and a DWR finish to battle the elements.

  • Fleece-lined pockets for when you forget your gloves
  • Deluge DWR finish sheds light precip
  • Waterproof breathable H2No barrier provides protection through prolonged flurries
  • 600-Fill-power goose down combats the bitter cold
  • Insulated, removable hood allows adaptability when it warms up and you don’t want excess bulk

Bottom Line:

Don’t go into winter’s battle without your armor.

I know there have been size questions before, but I'll go ahead and ask another. I'm 6'1 195lbs, should I go medium or large? I've had mixed results with Patagonia on sizing, sometimes a large fits like a trash bag, and other times it fits great even though the "cut" is the same. Would prefer the jacket to fit a little slimmer, so thinking medium? Anyone have any advice?

If you're not layering, medium should work. I hesitate to say that, though, because you're right on the cusp. I'm 6'0 205, and a med is too tight across the shoulders.

Great jacket

I's light, warm, moves well and doesn't bind. The hood hangs perfectly without covering up your view...but I wish it had internal pockets

images should be up soon, but for now Dark Walnut is a nice dark brown, and the best description I've heard for Heritage Green is actually a vinatge navy.

No one seems to have any pictures of them not even the Patagonia web site, But if you look at the Patagonia Bivy product page it has the haritage green color and I would assume it is the same color for this jacket.

Just what I was looking for in a jacket

By:
April 29, 2012

I needed to replace an old jacket and I stumbled upon this Wanaka jacket at a local store. It was on sale but I was bummed they only had a medium. I usually wear a large in most coats and sweaters. I think I even have a size large Patagonia fleece jacket. But when I tried it on it was perfect. I'm 6'0" 160 lbs. I have long arms and these are just fine. I can't imagine wearing a large in this jacket, but I didn't have one to compare to. I use on early morning boat rides where it is often 20 - 40 degrees F at the dock and with the wind chill of the open boat at 35 mph it can be a bit chilly. With the zip up neck and the wind flap and the shell material and the quilted down interior, it is nice and warm. I am stoked to have found this jacket and it looks like it is built to last a long time.

I agree with Mike, I love mine and am about to write a review but no to skiing, it's pretty bulky.

Andy,
Definitely! It's fully waterproof, and super warm. If you're doing a lot of hiking or backcountry skiing, but for sitting on a charlift in chilly weather the Wanaka Down is a great option

IMO this jacket is not suitable for a ski jacket. It is a very warm jacket but too bulky, I would look for something more geared toward skiing.

Wanaka - Great Jacket!

By:
January 31, 2012

I'm currently on my 2nd Wanaka jacket. Because, this jacket runs pretty big. I'm 5'8" 210 and usually wear an XL in jackets and shirts. The XL was huge on me, I wore it for one season and loved it. But in the end I actually gave it to my 6'3" father in law! He is thrilled with it. I looked at a ton of options for a replacement and decided I wanted another Wanaka. I got a large this time and it's still a little bulky but I'm very happy with it. Perfect coat for Southeast Alaska winters!

Hello, I'm going to be spending several months in Alaska

Hello, I'm going to be spending several months in Alaska and in temps around -15* F. Would this jacket be sufficient with layering? Also, what is the length of the jacket? I am looking for something that is approximately thigh length. I am 5'9" and 175 lbs. Thanks.

That all depends on how long you are going to be outside. If you are walking from your car to the store, it will do fine with a shirt and sweater. But, if you intend on spending hours at a time in the outdoors, you really want to go with something more technical. As for sizing, if you're torse is 40 inches or less, go with a medium, otherwise a large. The jacket will only reach about mid-hips though. It is casual street wear!

Great jacket

By:
January 29, 2012

Wonderful jacket. Looks very cool. Got it in black to wear around town but I could definitely use it on the mountain also. This technology does breathe while maintaining it waterproofing ability. This is especially nice when going inside for a minute. I'm always hot anyways so I really can't stand jackets that don't breathe. The sizing is "normal," not too big, not too small. I'm 5'10" 235lbs and the XXL is fine for me. I pretty much wear XXL in everything. Bottom line is that with Patagonia, you know you're getting quality. Arms are just a tad long but I just tighten the button on the end of the sleeves and problem solved. It has down but I don't walk around looking like pillsbury doughboy because of too much down. I see myself using this for many years to come. Thanks backcountry....

Warmer than the down sweater, colder than the Fitz Roy; but with better weather protection.

Black oak looks nothing like the picture. At all. Looks like grey or navy. Now I have to pay for return shipping. Stupid online shopping. Buyer beware.

I am 6'0", and I weigh about 173 lbs. Would a medium in the Wanaka jacket fit well? I was given a Men's Medium Mountain Hardware Sub Zero down jacket for Christmas, and it was too short around the waist. Will the Wanaka fit similarly?

I think large should do it for you here in the Wanaka Down Jacket. It's give you good length in the waist, and a nice all around fit. We're just about the same dimensions and I'd choose a large in this jacket for sure.

I bought a rainshadow in Feb/2010 at the Ventura store. It's a medium and it fits me loosly, but very well. Both that jacket and the Wanaka are listed as "regular" fits by Patagonia any idea if a medium here is a comparably sized garment?

Sandy,
The medium Wanaka Down Jacket should fit you very similarly to your Rain Shadow. The insulation might change the fit slightly, but not enough to bump you up or down a size.
