Did Not Fit - Returned

By:
January 22, 2013

I'm 6'3" 210lbs and the XL did not fit well. Too baggy, and even too short in the torso. I have since tried on the L, which fit better but was still too short. Being tall, I'm quite susceptible to running into this problem with upper body clothes. Its rough.

Aside from the fit, the jacket itself seemed well constructed, light, and essentially exactly what i need. I just ordered the Torrentshell Parka, which is designed about 4 inches longer. I think this will solve my problem.

Stands up to ANYTHING

By:
September 6, 2011

I was working on the Tongass national forest all summer (Temperate rainforest receiving an annual avg of 120-180" of rain) and I was in need of something extraordinary for the work I do. I bush-wacked through some of the thickest, wettest, and most intense terrain the US has to offer. our day consisted of usually an hour or so hike into the forest going through anything that came in our way (search Devil's club) on rivers, nearly vertical slopes, and even rock cliffs. This is my second year with this job and I was never satisfied with any gear I had. Helly Hanson synthetic was too bulky, the PVC lined stuff was way too hot for any kind of physical activity, the list goes on.

The last month and a half of work I caved into buying this pricy jacket but after seeing it's toughness (from falling/dirt/grime/sweat/vegetation/etc...) I would honestly paid double and still be satisfied. Not only does this stand up to those gnarly thorns from D. club, but after hiking for 4 hours in the woods you have the option to unzip beneath your armpits for air ventilation -- GENIUS! Perfect placement b/c even with both flaps open it still keeps your body dry.

The hood rolls very conveniently into itself if you don't need it and it stays completely out of the way and remains comfortable on the neck. Speaking of, the suede lining along the back of the neck makes a huge difference so the wet outershell hardly comes in contact with skin. There are two drawstrings (lower neck and lining the edge of the hood) which allow for a nearly customized fit for any person/situation.

Both side pockets have lots of room to store big things and keep them relatively dry (compared to the outside) with solid zippers. That may sound ridiculous but may jackets I've encountered have zippers which wither 1) don't provide a good seal 2) get snagged on itself/jacket. You get the picture, it really seems like Patagonia thought of EVERYTHING for this piece of equipment. There is also an inner pocket that can fit a 12 oz ovaltine jar (don't ask why I just needed it to fit there!) but more or less perfect for maps and such.

As the cherry topper the whole jacket neatly compacts itself into it's left pocket smaller than the previously referred to ovaltine jar. The zipper has a snug enough seal that even when submerged in water for 30 seconds or so everything inside the pocket stays dry. (I fell into a river with the stowed jack at my chest. After getting out I was pretty cold expecting the worse putting it on but only my left side pocket area felt any remote coldness. extraordinary.
This jacket handled itself better than anything I've ever seen in the forest.

Running:
Against my better judgment I went out for some runs (2-5mi) in 20-35 mph winds with walls of sideways rain everywhere.. everywhere! I wore a long sleeve underarmor cold gear underneath and it was an unbelievable combination (Usually what I wore in the forest on tougher days) b/c I stayed dry, yes dry! I could hardly open my eyes from the wind/rain and my face was nearly stinging yet from the neck to waist I was warm, cozy, and ready to keep running regardless of what I came across.

I have probably only written 2-3 reviews in my life but they were for products which I believed in, those that the pictures on the website don't do justice, and those which exceeded any expectations I had. This jacket did everything and more.

If you are looking for a lightweight, thin, waterproof, versatile, breathable jacket this all that and so much more. I'm pretty sure I'm buying another one for next year when I go back but really I just want another one in case they discontinue this model.

I've learned if you are to spend money equipment is the best investment, and this is by far my favorite piece I own to date.

Depends on the size of the helmet honestly. The hood of the Torrentshell is designed to be climbing helmet compatible for sure, and some smaller/medium ski helmets should work just fine.

Great Spring Jacket

By:
April 12, 2010

This jacket is perfect for spring weather and especially if it rains. I mean, no water gets through, none at all. It's super super bomber. Has a nice athletic cut and blocks out wind fairly well. One of the nicest looking items Patagonia makes. I got mine in black, but it's a nice dark/jet black. Fits true to size.

I would recommend going with whatever your typical jacket size is. The Patagonia Torrentshell fits slimmer than a lot of other rainshells, but there is definitely room to layer underneath - especially if your only talking about a fleece. I am 5'6" and 145lbs, went with the small, and have no problem fitting a micro-down jacket underneath.

Awesome Beta! Finally something empirical and concrete! I get so sick of people posting ambiguous opinions like its "real small" or "sorta small" or "kinda big." Nice work Spencer. Now if you wanna be super awesome - put it on a digital scale and take a photo of the weight and tell us the size you're weighing! Though the manufacturers would hate that cause they couldn't give us their overly optimistic opinion. You're the man!

So Good

By:
April 13, 2011

This is probably the best rain jacket I have ever owned. Period. It's light as a feather, breathable as a light shirt, and provides a full range of motion. The H2no membrane works wonders, proving it's worth the first week I got it in a rain/snow storm while out back packing. It works fairly well in the wind too, providing a more than adequate shelter in the elements. I was torn between this jacket and the Marmot ageis, but it came down to the reputation that patagonia has built both environmentally and warranty wise. For the price, this is a steal for the quality of shell that it is! Thumbs Up!

I'd suggest a Medium considering the sizing guide on Patagonia's website and the comments on there about sizing of this jacket. To make a valid comment though, I'd have to know chest, neck, sleeve sizes... Have a look - http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-waterproof-torrentshell-jacket?p=83800-0-984

Keeps you dry.

By:
October 19, 2010

As a cheaper and lighter water/windproof shell, it does exactly that, keeps you super dry. I also love how it packs down into it's own pocket and has a tightening cord around your head so it follows your head when you rotate it side to side. The only small problem so far is that the hood doesn't seem to reach quite far enough over my head and my forehead stays a little exposed. However it did keep the rest me 100% dry in a downpour. I'm 5"9', 165lbs and a medium fits perfect.

Hey guys/gals;
I am looking into purchasing this jacket for my trip to Colombia, and I was just curious if someone had a size recommendation for me... I'm 5'10" and 170lbs. I don't like wearing things too loosely, but I don't want something that will limit my movement while out on hikes. This would probably be an everyday use jacket for me because I'm not too big on having more than what I need. Also, are there are any other torrentshells you could recommend, or is this one a pretty solid everyday/trail jacket?
Thanks!

I split my time between Oregon where the winter is a steady drizzle and in Montana where summer thunderstorms unleash all hell. I haven't had this in a t-storm yet, but its kept out the Oregon rain just fine. It weighs in just as light as an Arc'teryx, costs less than half as much, and in my opinion is made just as well, plus you've got Patagonia's environmental cred. I've taken it on a number of medium intensity bike rides in the 50s and it breaths excellently. However, I took it up to Hood and was a little disappointed with its ability to break wind, not as good as previous shells I've had. The cut is good, I'm 5'9" 155 and a medium fits perfect, loose enough to layer under, but slim enough to look good. The only thing that bugs me is that unless its really cinched down the hood doesn't keep any rain off your forehead.

I absolutely love this jacket. Unlike Chris Reid, I have not had the problem of it loosing its waterproofing. Easy to pack down small and lightweight make this jacket great for climbing, backpacking, and the like. And if the jacket does loose waterproofing, buying some solution for it wouldn't be too costly. Great jacket and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

I bought this jacket about a year ago, and it is an amazing purchase. The jacket is light weight, and perfect for any summer activity. You can fold it into one of its pockets and place it in your pack. The fit is as described, and has some room for a mid-layer if you need to. I live in Mammoth where spring snow is known as sierra cement, and snow showers are the norm. This jacket does a great job of keeping you dry - normally spring jackets are drenched for days after a brush with the wet snow. Patagonia makes an amazing product for the price.

This jacket is great for the price. Completely water proof. I am studying at the University of Wyoming and this jacket is the perfect outer layer. Great buy for the price and sweet color selection.

Excellent Jacket (and pants)

By:
October 19, 2011

Bought the jacket and matching Torrentshell pants. It's a basic set of rain gear that keeps you dry. Very light and packs down small. No bells and whistles but look at the price. Bought primarily for hiking in N.E. and walking the dog which takes up 2 hours of my day every day of the year. It's pouring down now and my jacket is still wet from my 2 hour walk but I am very dry. Regarding sizing which is sometimes a bit of a gamble when buying off the Internet. I'm 6'2", 46" chest, 36-37" waist depending on the time of year, 34" inside leg, my arms span about 6'4" and I'm about 230 lb. The XL (jacket and pants) fit perfect with room for fleece etc. For once the sleeves are long enough for me, coming down to my knuckles when my arms are down. I like the little hood adjuster elastic so it doesn't flop around in the wind. Pit zips are good to control your temperature when moving around, and the H2No fabric seems to control moisture build-up as well as I could expect. Wish the pocket storm flaps were 1/2" longer and the peak on the hood a little firmer. Would recommend this set to anyone that does not need 3-ply technical Gore-tex gear or doesn't fancy spending $600 on a higher-end set of waterproofs.

Lightweight, no frills, solid fit. The axillary vents are crucial for anyone that needs to move in the rain.

Great Jacket

By:
August 22, 2011

So the very first time I wore this jacket I was sold. I went out to recover an animal that we had harvested a day before. We had to crawl through super tight alders, and the odd berry thorn bush. I was reluctant to wear my new jacket because of the terrain we were going through but the rain was coming down super hard and I figured I would test it. I was trying to be gentle on it at first but then I just started crashing through the bush. It held up great against the thorns and branches. I was very impressed. As for waterproof, I'm sure it is in normal to harsh conditions but this was a rediculous outting on our hands and knees, crawling in the thick wet trees, there wasn't a dry spot on my body so being wet up top was the least of my worries. I would difinitely recommend this jacket for any use.

A Beast!

By:
February 7, 2011

I've had this for about a year now and I've taken it through hell and back. It's been with me in a 2 day downpour in Ecoun, France; a week of on and off rain in the Mayan Jungles of Becan Mexico; Multiple trips in the cold and wet of Chandler and Pideon Crawford mountains for multi day bouldering sessions. It's still holding up strong.

At 5'8" and 160 pounds I have the small and I love the atheletic fit it provides while still having enough room to have a decent anmount of clothing underneath it. Wore a base layer and softshell underneath this in high 40's/low 30's while in the windy rain at Horse Pens 40 and my upper body was warm and dry.

Only gripe, and a small one at that, is that while half zipped, the upper shoulders and hood tend to droop some. But if you're wearing, most likely its for the purpose of keeping you dry so it'll be zipped all the way.

I also love how it fits inside of it's own pocket. When rolled up like that it ends up about the size of a standard soda can. Easily packable and easily brought out. PLus underarm zips are great when it gets a little too stuffy. Got this in Gecko Green and I get nothing but compliments on it. Great Jacket! If it ever wears out on me I would definitely get another one.

A large will probably fit comfortably without being too baggy. However, with shells in general I prefer a little extra room for layering and extra coverage and will got up a size (or even two) if I know a company runs small (Patagonia does not, I believe).

Happy trails!

very fashionable, functions well and has saved my @ss quite a few times. not for cold weather, and dont expect it to keep you dry during an all day downpour. it wicks fairly well but does stick to the skin after a lot of exertion. all in all a great jack, i love mine for just walking around DC when the weather is less than desirable.

The torrentshell is not a long jacket and it has a slim cut. I like it a lot. Since it is not long, I guess S would work for you without being too baggy. Well, it depends on whether you like jacket to be a little long or just be short.

Hi jac,
I'm close to your size, 1.75m with a 36/37 chest, and I wear S in all my technical outerwear. The Torrentshell has a slightly athletic cut, with just enough room to comfortably fit an insulating layer like a midweight fleece. It's not skin-tight but it's not boxy or oversized like comparable TNF or Columbia products.

In my experience, you'd be hard-pressed to find a rain jacket or technical shell that is more fitted than this. Luckily, if you do find the S too baggy, Patagonia is one of the few technical outerwear brands that offers men's size XS, though you might have to go directly to their website to find them. http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/patagonia-mens-waterproof-torrentshell-jacket?p=83800-0-722

great budget rain jacket

By:
June 14, 2010

This jacket offers a nice balance between waterproof performance and cost. This is obviously not the burliest of shells, but for hiking or bicycling in the rain, and for carrying around when the skies look dark and dreary, the lightweight Torrentshell is more than up to the task. As you might imagine, it's pretty devoid of features, which is fine for the most part. But I do wish Patagonia had included some kind of cinch for the hood adjustment system. You really need to have the hood tightened down to shield your face when it's pouring, and without cinches the only way to do that is by tying the little adjuster strings together under your chin. That's a little annoying, especially if you're already outside and you find yourself in a sudden downpour. Plus, the material does feel a little clammy next to your skin when it's cool out... but if it's actually cold out, there's no reason you shouldn't be wearing long sleeves under a rain shell, anyway.

But all in all, this is a nice little 3-season jacket for its intended purpose... to stuff in your backpack or day bag if there's a chance of rain while you're out and about, or to wear on your daily commute. I wouldn't use it as a winter hard shell, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't do a pretty good job of it in a pinch. I took this jacket on a mid-August hike on one of Colorado's Fourteeners. When an unexpected hail storm moved in on us, the Torrentshell, layered over a mid-weight fleece, kept me dry and relatively comfortable as temps plummeted from the 50s to the 20s with blasting winds and freezing precipitation. While everyone else on the mountain retreated to the trailhead, I was able to weather the storm and continue on to the summit after the hail cleared off. Not too shabby for a "just-in-case" rain shell.

Runs true to size, with a slight athletic cut.

[Addendum] As has been pointed out, this jacket actually does have (well-hidden) hood cinches! Rejoice, good people!

You just have to dig a little deeper! I was so frustrated by this problem as well when I first wore my Torrentshell out in the rain. I also thought I had to tie the adjuster strings together which seemed so ridiculous. After a more in-depth look it turned out there ARE adjuster cinches on the jacket. They are at the base of the hood underneath a covered flap. Look a little more closely and it will solve all your problems!

I just bought the Torrentshell. When I tried on that jacket and the Rain Shadow, I was surprised by those hood adjusters. Seemed a little ridiculous that they can't sized. Pull them and then what? I figure I'll attach some spring adjusters like they have at the waist or bottom of most jackets (but smaller) and they won't even be noticeable. You can pick them up at REI or whatever camping store. I've used them before when I wanted to tighten some strings without tying knots in them, like on a stuff sack.

Brad,
I think you'll find that the Torrentshell is similar in waterproofness and breathability to other jackets in its general price range. From short afternoon hikes in the rain to summitting some of Colorado's Fourteeners in driving hail, I can tell you that the Torrentshell material is completely waterproof. The only weaknesses in its waterproofing are the front zipper and pit zips, which have storm flaps, but are not waterproof. So if you find yourself in genuinely torrential downpours for hours at a time, you may find that water enters in those areas. It's the cheaper storm flaps that put the Torrentshell in its current price range - the Patagonia Rain Shadow jacket is essentially identical to the Torrentshell, but at $60 more expensive, it also comes with waterproof zippers.

From what I've observed, breathability ratings (even moreso than waterproofness ratings) are essentially manufacturers' attempts at objectifying things which are inherently subjective. 20,000mm and 5k certainly sound "sciencey." But the cute little lab tests they perform in order to ascertain their "ratings" are so far removed from practical application that they are next to useless except as very broad generalizations. There are dozens of variables that affect how well a given material will perform, from how well you clean and maintain them, to what the specific weather conditions are like, to your own personal "climate" in terms of the heat and moisture you generate and your personal humidity tolerance. For one thing, not all manufacturers use the same testing standards. Helly Hansen, for example, tests its materials after 5 wash cycles... which is nice for them, but sort of ruins their results as a measure of comparison. Gore, on the other hand, doesn't release waterproof or breathability ratings at all. Additionally, the manufacturers typically only test the waterproof membrane itself - not the fabric it is later applied to, much less the garment made from that fabric. The best that we, as consumers, can presume is that no material is both totally waterproof and perfectly breathable. And cheaper materials sacrifice breathability, or waterproofness, or both, to at least some degree. Aside from that, you will have to rely on the experiences of your fellow outdoor enthusiasts, as well as your own, to determine a jacket's breathability.

Having said all that, I would still recommend the Torrentshell for a low-price rain shell. H2No is just as good as other brands' similarly-priced materials. But Patagonia's quality of construction, attention to detail, and dedication to the environment all contribute to a piece that compares very favorably to similar products from other manufacturers.

I realize this is probably way more info than you wanted, and it doesn't directly answer your question, but in general I think you should avoid relying on a manufacturer's own ratings as absolute indicators of a product's quality or performance.

From personal experience the Torrent-shell is breathable and lightweight. I would say the jackets are almost the same, so the warranty and price should help you choose. Hope this helped!

This thing weighs next to nothing and packs down into one of its pockets. I have had no problems with the waterproofing even in heavy rain. Glad that a jacket at this price point has pit zips. This is a huge step up from the pullover version. The pullover doesn't have pit zips or adjustable cuffs. Worth the extra $ for the full zip.

I have read that the zippers can be annoying on the rain shadow, but the hood is better than the torrentshell... What are the differences? The materials used on both jackets are essentially the same - ripstop nylon, and both have Patagonia's 2.5-layer H2NO waterproof and breathable fabric, with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Both have hoods that roll up to stow (no zip). The fit is also similar.

Advantages of the Rainshadow:
- Lighter by 2.3 ounces (65.2g)
- Has DWR centre zipper (as opposed to the Torrentshell's internal/external storm flaps)
- Internal fabric has a raised pattern to enhance breathability and durability

Advantages of Torrentshell
- Cheaper by $60
- Stows in one of its zippered pockets

Basically the Rainshadow is slightly more technical, while the Torrentshell is a more basic rain jacket. It basically comes down to if you are willing to pay $60 extra for DWR zips and 2 ounces while sacrificing the stow away ability of the Torrentshell.

Hope this helps :)

Hands down the best rain shell jacket I have owned. Other than a torrential downpour, you can watch the water bead up and slide right off. Even in a downpour though, you stay completely dry. After a full year of use, no need to retreat with any type of waterproofing. Washed it once after a very wet and muddy weekend excursion - came out looking brand new and beaded up like the day I bought it. Affordable. Practical. Stylish. Need I say more?

The difference in these two is the fabric, and what the coat is designed to put up with. The Stretch Ascent is designed to take a beating and keep on trucking. It falls in the category of "technical shell" and suggested use is Alpine climbing. Where as the Torrent is the "rain jacket" category and is designed for large amounts of water, but prob wouldn't hold up well around the equipment that is used for alpine climbing. The rip-stop nylon can handle a lot..but doesn't fair well with sharp objects. So could you use this for a ski shell..sure, but I don't recommend it and if it didn't last long, I wouldn't be surprised.

November 28, 2011

I bought this rain shell to be a lower-cost high-vis rain jacket for commuting by bike. The gecko green is "loud" enough and I didn't have to pay the massive mark-up for clothing sold specifically for cyclists. It's particularly good because it has velcro on the wrists for a tight seal around gloves and a stretchy waist tie for a snug fit.

This is a waterPROOF shell with zero breathability. Even with a simple mostly downhill 2.5 mile ride in 50-degree overcast resulted in a bit of sweat and some dampness inside the shell. Use this in the rain or as a windbreaker only on bitterly cold and windy days.

The only flaw I can find with this shell is the top of the zipper and the hood. The top of the zipper covers the mouth (as one would want during a cold downpour, but it only gets in the way while biking. Also, the hood cannot be easily stowed. But I knew both of those factors before I bought it.

It keeps me dry pretty much all the time when it's pouring down. My only complaint was with its somewhat wierdly-being-positioned hood. It fits well, but sometimes I get water on my face. The jacket's ultralight and waterproof. It can fit into its own sack (its left pocket), so you can just throw it into your backpack with ease. After a few trips, mine got a bit wrinkly, but it didn't affect jacket's performance. Ventilation is great, and the size runs regular/a bit loose. I usually wear medium (5'10'' 185 lbs) and with my Patagonia torrentshell(medium), I can wear my down sweater jacket underneath as an insulating layer. Pretty well-made and comfortable. Another great outerlayer jacket by Patagonia!

Nice jacket for day to day rain

By:

This jacket works great for almost all wet conditions. the only problem I have encountered was when I was in torrental rain (no pun intended) and I had to clear a gutter. I was reaching up the whole time so the pit zips were directly exposed to the rain. there are storm flaps over the pit zips but they do not totally cover the non-water resistant zippers, so a small amount of water got in.
But to put it into perspective I think all pit zips would leak in those conditions unless they had a truly waterproof zipper but there are none with waterproof zippers on the pit zips.

I'm 6,1 180 lbs and ordered the L to be on the safe side. I also ordered the Torrentshell pants. I prefer a slimmer fit for less wind resistance (bike riding, etc.) and wished I'd ordered the Mediums in both. Especially the pants though. They were very baggy all-around. I'm exchanging and even considering ordering the Smalls in the pants on account of how baggy they fit. If anyone is looking for a slightly slimmer fitting less expensive option I'd go for the North Face Venture as a substitute. Their cuts are a bit more modern but the material is essentially the same and durability is very good as well. I bought that set for my girlfriend and she loves them. Time to re-up for me so had to go with another brand so we wouldnt look too coordinated out and about in the Seattle rain. I'm excited about the stowability aspect of the torrentshell. It was a big deciding factor over the rainshadow's DWR zips. Bottom line, if you like a slim fit order down a size if you're on the edge measurement-wise. Patagonia's cuts are roomy enough to still layer under if you do. Hope this helps!

This jacket is totaly waterproof. When I first got it I put it on and held my arm under the sink for a couple minutes, no water came through. The following weekend I wore it for a backpack trip, it rained for 13 hours... no leaks! it does build up condensation even with the pit zips all the way open, but what rain jacket for this price doesnt? I read a reveiw about a fleece collar, the fleeze isnt on the face part, just a small patch on the back of the neck. I also read a reveiw about there being a pocket that it folds into, theres no pocket but it does roll into its hood and is held tight by a velcro strap. I'm 5'10 145 with longer arms and it fits great! The drawcords for tightening the hood are a little difficult to use some times. Awesome jacket, wait for it to go on sale, I picked mine up 2 weeks ago for $90!

high quality piece. the fit and look are as good as i've come across. weatherproofing has proved true thus far. windproofing makes it surprisingly warm. perfect on-campus piece, and technical enough to hold its own. highly recommended.

awsome shell, i bought this jacket for Mt. Rainer and it did great through a midnight summit push which included lighning and heavy sleet. when i got warm i just unzipped the arm pit vents and dumped heat. great shell for the price. very light and folds into its own pocket.

Great Jacket

The Torrentshell is great bang for your buck. I live in Texas, but believe it or not this jacket gets a lot of wear. I am 5'-11" and 160 lbs and wear a medium. It fits well by itself or as a layer.

Didn't like it

Not what I expected from Patagonia. They went a little cheap with this jacket. This is almost too thin and light. It really wouldn't take a beating for long. It's similar to the North Face Venture in weight/material, but not nearly as nice as the Rain Shadow (a much better jacket, in my opinion - I have four of them). If you are looking for a durable and slick rain jacket, spend a little more on the Rain Shadow. One other thing bothered me about this coat - when I took the jacket out of the package, it smelled horrible! A real strong chemical smell that has not gone away even after trying to air it out in the house with the windows open. Ugh. It's going back.

I am 5'11" and 170 pounds. I normally wear a large in Jackets but i am not sure what size to get here. I would like the option of wearing it with a North Face fleece underneath and not have it feel to snug but also wear it with just a t-shirt or flannel. What size would you rec?
