Head to work, class, or the woods with the Patagonia Refugio Day Pack. This three-compartment pack provides the space you need for a full-day adventure, and the organization to keep it from becoming a full-day backpack cavity search.
Padded, raised compartment protects your 17-inch laptop
Hydration-ready for hiking and cycling
Vertical zip pocket for your wallet and phone
Micro-fleece lined pocket protects your shades or MP3 player
The pack is not heavily padded to protect every electronic gadget available. (I have a pack for that.) It is lightweight, roomy, and strong. I put the Macbook Pro 15" with power cord, etc., in its slot with room to spare, then proceeded to stuff the bag full of a long weekend's worth of clothes - toiletries, underwear, pyjamas, two pairs of jeans, three shirts, and a pair of shoes. I bought this pack because I go to Sierra Leone regularly. I carry my pack through airports and the jungle. I need a bag light enough and big enough to carry the laptop, underwear, toiletries, several lappas and tanks, a dream sack, a towel, two pair of sandals, pjs, and my lesson plans. After being stuck a few times with my old, super-padded, heavier, less roomy bag, I was determined to get something better, and this bag is it. NB: I bought the magenta as it was on sale. My 21-yr old grandson was a little hesitant to carry it, thus earning himself a lecture on homophobia. If the color would be a problem for you, try a different one.
I needed a pack for daily usage that was padded for a laptop during the week and could take a beating on the weekend. This bag is perfect. It seems like Patagonia gathered people from all walks of life and sent them out with normal plain jane packs and told them to write notes on what would have been nice to have because they aced this pack. A small top fleece lined zipper pouch which is awesome if you travel as you can stowe it under the plane seat in front of you and still have access to your phone, iPod, etc without making a scene and making the person next to you mad. The front vertical zipper is a great feature as well as it makes things of all shapes and sizes easily accessible. I also liked the straps and all the loops is had to attach carabiners to for additional items if need be. The laptop pouch is perfect in size and still gives ample space for other items as well. As others have mentioned on the weekends loose the backpack and put in a bladder and it has an opening for a water straw for your camelbak. Again, this thing rocks and holds a load of stuff. As an example (because when I read reviews I like stories) I recently went to the UK, in my pack, I packed a laptop, external HD, mouse, cellphone, iPod, phone, wallet, sigg bottle, 6 packs of trail mix, charging cords, binder, pair of jeans, socks, 2 boxers, polo, tshirt, and toiletries... all this and I had no problem getting it under the plane seat in front of me and it was weighted well with the straps that I was not too fatigued at the end of my flights... again, great pack!
As someone with a nine year old and one younger, I am faced with the same question every summer. I did compare this pack for my boy and felt that one could get three to five years out of it; however the price is much more for a school pack than the cheap packs at megastores like Walmart. And face it, most kids want a different one each year. Another question to ask is will my children be able to overload it and slowly hurt his back.
I use daypacks for carrying schoolbooks, business materials, and for hiking. I don't find it surprising at all that this is the most popular pack in the Patagonia daypack line. The laptop sleeve doubles as a hydration bladder, there are two drink holders that are useful for stashing items for readily-accessible gear. I had some concern about the front vertical zippered pocket, but have found numerous uses for it! All in all, well worth the dough!
This pack rocks. At 28 liters it is small enough for school or commuting to work, but big enough for a day hike. I use it for commuting, here's why: I can carry just my laptop (in the provided sleeve non the less) or I can stash my running shoes, shorts, shirt and water in there for a lunch time workout. The color is awesome (Lemon Lime) and is still dudely enough for a dude.
Is the Grecian Blue acceptable for both genders? I'm a dude
Is the Grecian Blue acceptable for both genders? I'm a dude in high school and I would prefer not to get mocked or anything. Is it manly enough to pull off?
Any color is really O.K. for either gender and in a few years it won't matter to you BUT HS can be a bit tough. You might want to play it safe and go with a red, grey or black. Otoh, if the blue speaks to you, it's your bag , get the one you like. Good Luck!
The Refugio is the best selling pack in Patagonia's new daypack line, and for good reason. It's a nice balance of enough room, but not too much. Nice and secure for a laptop, and still has generous space for all your stuff.
I've had this pack for over a year with heavy usage nearly every day and it still looks great! I love the pocket specifically for sunglasses and I love how there are plenty of pockets for anything you want to store. I definitely recommend this pack!
The pack is great. It has a pocket for everything I need. The compression straps are awesome. Im not sure what the loops on the bottom are design for, but I run a strap through them and then I have a waist belt.
Lots of little nice features on this pack. Inside there are a lot of little small divided pockets and sleeves making organization easy. Love the full zip front pocket for access and loading. Great build quality. It was actually a little bigger than I thought it was going to be. Could easily be a day hiking pack.....and maybe even a real light weight quick overnighter.
