The windproof Patagonia Women's R4 Jacket is a low-profile fleece for fast forward pursuits. The R4 fleece blocks wind while maintaining a comfortable temperature range throughout changing conditions, when a storm threatens just pull a hardshell over it. Patagonia made the R4 Jacket with seamless shoulders so a backpack sits comfortably. Handwarmer pockets are placed out of the way of a harness or waist belt for relaxed climbing and backpacking.
Bottom Line:
Be quick and comfortable in the windproof Patagonia R4 Jacket.
I bought this jacket for polar travel, and its perfect! Its great for both layering and as an outer layer. The jacket's wind stopping capabilities make it perfect for an outer jacket on dry arctic summer days, and the warm fleece will be a great mid layer in the antarctic. The downside is the sizing. The arms are HUGE, and the torso true to size. Its a strange combination, but it doesn't restrict mobility, so its all good!
This is the greatest Jacket I've ever owned. I live in SD and so far I've been able to wear this as my winter coat. If I'm outside for longer periods of time, I've worn the appropriate layers and haven't noticed the cold at all. I'm a size 2-4 and ordered a small, it fits just fine. I can even wear a chunkier sweater underneath. The drawstring cord in the back is a weird placement, I agree with one of the other reviewers on that. But I'd buy this Jacket again, and I get a lot of compliments on it as well.

I'm considering buying the R4. I live in Wisconsin we have very cold winters, would I be able to use this jacket as my main winter coat? I am also 5'9 I am wondering how long it is?
Alli, The R4 Jacket is a great winter piece and will be very warm for your Wisconsin winters. It's a warm fleece to begin with, and has a stretch windproof laminate that makes it incredibly warm. For sizing reference, the medium jacket here has a center back length of 25"
I seem to always be cold - I have actually been hot on occasion in this all purpose fleece! I love the soft feel of the exterior, the hidden pockets, the fitted shape and of course the warmth it provides!
I was wondering which patagonia fleece jackets are zip in compatible
I was wondering which patagonia fleece jackets are zip in compatible with shells? Also I was wondering if they would be able to be zipped into a north face shell?
The R4 fleece jacket unfortunately would not zip into a North Face shell. The only Patagonia jackets that are designed to zip into shells are some of the ladies long down coats.
I purchased a medium in Natural for my wife, and I was very confident that I was going to give this jacket five stars. It's every bit impressive as the men's version, and it's the same level of quality in every way, save one small issue. The drawstring at the waste of the jacket has a cincher, which has been placed in the lower back part of the jacket, on the inside (if you look at picture 8 of the detail view, you can see what I'm talking about). The problem is that when my wife has rested up against something that isn't soft, under certain circumstances, she has felt the plastic cincher, and has expressed minor discomfort. Her jacket is not too small either. She has only felt it a couple of times, so it shouldn't be a major deterant, but buyers should be aware of the placement. And truth be told, the location of the drawstring and cincher is far better than having it hang outside of the jacket, but I personally like how the men's jacket has it running along the side of the interior of the jacket. Other than that, she feels very comfortable and very warm in this jacket. She has said that she would highly recommend it to others, and since I would highly recommend the men's R4 to others, I would second her opinion. This jacket is perfect for breezy to near freezing weather as an exterior shell if it is not raining heavily outside.
I love this jacket!! It is so warm!! Blocks the wind. I think it is my warmest jacket!! I only wear light layers or I get too hot - and I'm usually always cold. If you plan on wearing thicker layers, order a bigger size. Mine is fine with a couple of light layers, but if I wear something thicker the jacket fits tighter. I am so glad I got this jacket!! I have a dog and the fleece does not attract dog hair as much as some of the other fleece jackets I have.
Trying to decide between the R3 and the R4 patagonia fleece for
Trying to decide between the R3 and the R4 patagonia fleece for my wife. Which would you recommend for the best balance between warmth and breathability. Also, what is the difference between the R4 and the R4 Lightweight? My wife will be using this jacket as a stand alone jacket and as a warm, breathable midlayer under shell for skiing.
from your description I think the R3 Jacket is the best fleece for you wife. It's very warm, and still offers good breathability for layering.
The two R4 fleeces are both windproof, and very warm on their own. The R4 is a fuzzier, warmer fleece, and the lightweight R4 has the same windproof membrane, but a lighter fleece, and breathable R1 fabric under the arms w/ no windproofing.
I very rarely wear fleece jackets simply because they let the wind blow right through. I had been looking for some time for a lightweight jacket that could fit the bill for temps in the 40s to 50s, something my fleece jackets seemed to do OK with when it wasn't windy. I bought this jacket and it hasn't disappointed. It's too warm to wear hiking and has worked great as for around town and walking into and from work. Depending on the layers underneath, I can wear as low at 30 if I am walking and with a light long sleeve am comfortable in the 50s with the pockets open. It blocks the wind amazingly well and the nice plush lining adds nice insulation compared to other windproof fleece jackets that only have a thin polyester layer. My only complaint would be the size of the pockets, which are great for ventilating when open, but when I stick my hands in during cold temps I can feel a chill. I just wear heavier clothes and keep them zipped up. My boyfriend calls me his "monster" when I wear it. I think it looks a lot dressier than the Monkey Woman jackets, which just remind me of the muppets and don't block any wind. I bought the brown color and love it.
This jacket felt incredible from the first second I put it on. It's super cozy, very warm, lightweight, and protects from the wind way better than I expected.
My jacket was fine. I would send it straight back to Patagonia for a replacement. If that's too much, I'm positive backcountry would make an exchange for you.
This jacket is an awesome product. I had to return it due to a medical condition. Believe me. If there was a store within driving distance, I would have been able to try and get this jacket on first without ordering, I would have. Thanks to the EXCELLENT customer service and return policy at BC, No problems. This is a top quality product and would have loved to have kept it. All you others, it's a good buy. Stylish, nice long sleeves, fits body nicely. Can't tell you about the warm factor as I never wore it outside; so sorry about that.
Great fit, my bf got this for me and I was concerned it might have a boxy shape but it's very feminine. I am 5'7" tall, 130 pounds and the small fits me perfectly. Sleeves just a little long which helps keep my hands warm when running. This coat is so toasty warm and the green habitat color looks so much better than in the photos.
Although pricey, I love this fleece for it's warmth and the color is great! Really blocks the wind and light rain doesn't absorb. It does run large, I am 5' 10", 170 and I usually wear a size large but the large was HUGE, had to exchange it for a medium which I had to pay shipping on. Even the medium would be too big if I lost weight. Sleeves are extra long in length which is nice. I wish it had more of a feminine fit, a little snug in chest a wide in waist, but all in all a nice jacket.
look at the size chart to make sure you order the correct size. My wife is a boarder line large - xlarge... the large is snug which shows off her body, but she feels the xlarge may have been more comfortable.
Great jacket, but was a bit thick, as some people commented it was lightweight, but I wouldn't classify it that way! Other reviews said it ran small so I ordered a size bigger. Depends on what you want to put on underneath as to the size. For a single layer or two, I wouldn't order larger. Sweater and such, perhaps a size larger but if I had to order again, I would order my normal size. Too bad the wrists don't adjust to make them smaller and keep the wind out more. It's warm and great outdoors for Colorado. It can be a bit stiff on first wear, and since I haven't washed mine yet, I don't know if it will loosen up. It's still a great jacket so enjoy!!
I love the jacket, though I don't "get" the drawstring in the back. I am ALWAYS cold and I wear this jacket as a sweater to keep me from shivering all day. I bought more than one and would HIGHLY recommend this item to anyone who likes being warm.
Not sure of the washing instructions. Any advice from previous owners??
I've had this jacket for 4 years and have found it to be useful for only specific conditions. For me, its not a go-everywhere jacket. Its great to layer over a long sleeve shirt but you can't put much else under it. It's kind of bulky and stiff and I find myself not taking it if I think I'll take it off because its hard to fit in a day pack. Also, it tends to get somewhat sweaty if you wear it while hiking or sleeping. All that being said, this jacket is PERFECT for climbing. It has loose cut, full range, perfect length arms and is short enough to not get in the way of your harness. Also, it is super warm for its size and is pretty low-profile (no hood, hanging cinch pulls, etc). I've found that if you get a little sweaty, opening the large pockets vents it pretty well (pockets are lined in mesh).
The zipper on this jacket didn't work right. That's okay, but in general the cut of the sleeves was strange. They were too wide. Otherwise the black/grey color scheme and the material are lovely. I liked the way the jacket was a little long to cover the waist. I didn't keep the jacket because of the defective zipper but I'm not sure I would've anyway because of the unflattering cut of the sleeves. The sleeves were also too long.
This jacket is the best I have ever owned. I usually by TNorthFace and this jacket is MUCH nicer!! It is very windproof as advertised and still lightweight. It is also a lille bit more fitted and figure flattering. Also this jacket is perfect for tall girls with long arms as the arms are nice and long! I am completely satisfied and would definately buy another!
This is my first piece of Patagonia gear. Although it is priced high, the quality of material and construction, also its light weight with extreme warmth warrant the cost. Love it, love it!!
This coat is perfect for women who want a flattering, yet capable windproof fleece coat. It's also very warm so you won't need to layer underneath it. I've tried other brands for windproof coats and this is a one-stop pick. The fleece also won't pill away like other "felt" coats with a thin windproof layer.
I love my Patagonia R4. It is windproof which keeps me very warm and protected from the cold Chicago breezes off the lake. The only thing that bothers me is the collar. It is a little stiff which can be annoying. I am hoping it will loosen up with wear. I also love the color, it is a very rich green! I get many compliments ...
This is the best and warmest fleece jacket I own. I was very warm wearing this as a layer and sitting on the chair lift with a gusty wind blowing. You pay for what you get.
I love the super plushy fleece on the R4- it looks cool and feels great. I've worn the R2 for years (love it- Patagonia's midweight breathable fleece), and the difference between having the windstopper makes it 100% a different jacket. I've worn this skiing under a shell on the coldest day of the season, and was toasty warm all day- the windstopper is awesome. Other friends that have owned this jacket either love it adamantly or are too warm in it-- but since I'm almost always cold, it's perfect for me- I absolutely love it.
The only thing that keeps this from being as versatile as the R2 is the cut of the arms- which taper in the forarms to be a true athletic cut, and they don't really stretch. It's perfect if you have a thin baselayer or no sleeves, but if you're expecting to wear this casually with a big sweater underneath, it's not really your jacket.
This jacket feels like its made of carpet, but a very warm carpet. Used to roomier soft shells, my 1st impression was that the R4 is so fitted it's almost stiff. Once you get used to it though, you realize how warm it is. I haven't noticed any cold sneaking through, and I am always toasty. Love that it has long sleeves and a longer back. Another quality jacket from Patagonia.
Patagonia's clothing is always really well constructed, but this jacket is bomber. Zippers are really sturdy. The best feature is the hidden draw-string cincher on the waist cuff. It's great not to have it hanging down and catching on things like other jackets I own. Only draw-back is that you can't get too close to a campfire. Like all fleece, an ember will burn a hole in the fabric.
