Patagonia Ultralight Down Jacket - Men's

Item # PAT2523

Toss on the Patagonia Men's Ultralight Down Jacket when there's a gas line break and you're without heat for a couple of days. It's a total bummer, but at least you have this highly-compressible 800-fill-power goose down jacket to keep you plenty warm. Made with durable nylon fabric, this slim-silhouette jacket fits perfectly beneath your shell when you do some winter camping or skiing, and it works great as a stand-alone layer.

Bottom Line:

Hopefully your pipes won't burst.

Awesome mid-warmth down jacket!

Patagonia has got it just right with this lightweight down jacket. The minimalist design is fantastic. The construction quality is also very good.

It's just a great "go to" jacket for cool-to-cold weather. I use it in the cold (below freezing) as an "around town" option where you might be out in the freezing cold briefly then in your car, then inside somewhere etc. For colder temps (e.g. strolling the streets at night in the cold snow), I have a patagucci high loft down jacket that is better suited to those temps . The ultralight down jacket also goes in my pack on splitboard touring days when it's really cold as an emergency layer. If you midlayer this under a shell, it better be mega-cold unless you're standing around doing nothing.

The usual considerations with down apply e.g. if you get it wet, it's useless. The warmth-to-weight ratio is better than anything else I've worn. The "ripstop" nylon material is quite lightweight so just watch you don't snag it on anything sharp, it's nowhere near as tough as a goretex shell, say.

It's got 2 handwarmer pockets and a 'napoleon' pocket. It's also got a waist tightening cord. It packs up nice and small into the stuff sack and weighs next to nothing.

I would class it as water resistant, not waterproof, you can get a bit of snow or moisture on it, but I wouldn't want to be exposed too long unless you had a shell over it.

A lot of people seem to buy it thinking it will be a good mid-layer for snowsports, but I wouldn't use it for this unless it was really cold as in all likelihood it will get wet/sweaty. If this is what you are looking for, maybe think about synthetic insulation (which is still warm when wet) like the nano or micro puff jackets.

It's definitely slim fit.

I don't give 5 stars lightly so all-in-all, a super jacket and one I wear more than any other in my cool-cold wardrobe.

I got the medium and it is a perfect fit. Not as snug as I thought it would be.

I would say large, or medium depending on the fit you're looking for. The Ultralight Down Jacket is definitely a slimmer fit and runs a bit more snug that the regular Patagonia Down Sweater or Nano Puff. I would say medium if you want a trim, more snug of a fit. Or Large is what I would wear and we're of similar size. It would give you a little more room overall and a little more length in the body which is nice.

Excellent choice.

Just like its hooded brother the Patagonia Down Sweater is an essential piece in any gear heads closet.

The fit is slim, but not tight, and holds the insulation properly against the body where it traps the maximum amount of body generated heat. In addition to this the material is soft, and supple, comfortable against the skin, and breathes very well. Lastly the chest pocket is an excellent edition as it is poised perfectly for quick access when this garment is worn under a hard shell.

its okay as a midlayer on a cold DRY day and thats about it.

I bought this as a midlayer to use under a snowboarding shell.

By the end of the day the collar was sopping wet from a combo of sweat and snow ... I didnt use it the next day. It was replaced by the R3 fleece which was pretty great!

I'm 6' and about 190lbs. I have the Rubicon Rider in Large, and find it too big. I'd like to get something more fitted, but am not sure if I go Medium or Large with this jacket. Any thoughts?

You should be fine with a large here BSW, the Ultralight Down Jacket and Rubicon Rider are completely different fits.

i'm a little over 6'2, 180, and the large fits me perfect. a good 3 inches below waist-line, and the cinch keeps it snug against your body. maybe someone else has the medium specs.

not sure yet

this jacket fits closer than the micro puff and down sweater, which is, mostly, nice. however, i found that the material bulges out in the stomach area as if i were expecting! not sure if the jacket needs to be broken in to lay flat or whether it might have been defectively constructed, or just the design on my particular body. anyone have thoughts? the aesthetic of this coat is nice with the trimmer fit and the thin baffles. i thought it would feel lighter when on, probably from all the chatter i read beforehand, but it does feel like an insulatory jacket when on - not nothing. one complaint i do have, and this might be color specific (deep mango), is that you can see the down right through the jacket. the exterior shell material has a high sheen so it reflects light, but when in dull or normal light you can see right through it. when i first opened it and saw it, i almost thought there was mold inside the jacket. i contacted patagonia and they said, it's translucent if not transparent lightweight material. darker colors will show less. so go dark if you want to minimize visible down. good jacket but am curious to hear what others have to say about fit and visibility of down.

I picked up this jacket as well. Sweet piece for sure, but I have the bulging issues as well.
It bugs the heck out of me for some reason. thinking of returning it, but such a killer price and awesome jacket, I am having a hard time figuring out what to do.

I have the hoody version in large deep mango and it fits well (6', 188,34/35 waist). I understand what you mean about the stomach bulge. I bought a Marmot Zeus that I returned b/c of that issue. I just think it depends where the jacket breaks on your body. Maybe if u tightened or loosened the cinch a bit it would break differently. As for the down, I think it looks like orange camo up close. I'm not into camo or anything, but it doesnt bother me. At 1st I thought I was compromising on the color/design, but I think it looks good in person. And when I think about when and where I would wear the jacket it really becomes a moot point imo.

Ranger Joe,
Large for sure. The Ultralight Down Jacket runs a tad smaller than other Patagonia down pieces, and I think a medium would be too short and too snug in the chest for you.

Warm, athletic fit

By:

This is a very nice jacket. It is incredibly warm. You will be surprised by how lightweight it is compared to its warmth. I like the chest pocket and the hand warmer pockets as well. My only problems with this jacket are the color combinations. I got the orange one. The pictures on the internet show it as much darker than it really is. I really stand out wearing the orange, whether that is good or not. All in all, its a great jacket and backcountry.com is a great place to buy it.
