Round out your backcountry wardrobe with the super-versatile and always-stylin’ Patagonia Down Sweater Vest. This insulated vest fits right into your backcountry layering system and won’t object if you take it straight from the trail to the main-street café.
Highly compressible 800-fill down insulation means this vest can be worn as your outer layer in mild winter weather, and the slim fit makes it easy to layer a weatherproof shell on top of the vest in cold and wet climates
Ultralight, windproof and water-resistant polyester shell has high-tear strength and resists abrasion
DWR finish resists rain, grapple, snow, and coffee spills with equal gusto
Quilted construction keeps insulation firmly in place to help maintain warmth
Lock out even more cold and wind with the dual-adjust drawcord hem
Stuffs into its own zippered stretch-mesh pocket to help save space
Bottom Line:
Attractive people will want to talk to you and/or you’ll be warm.
Excellent! Fits right, its great on top of a long t or as base layer. Keeps the core warm, oh yes and the 800 down makes it very packageable. I just used it for a trip to Rochester, NY. Kept it on all the time!
What is the difference between the Patagonia Nano Puff Vest and
What is the difference between the Patagonia Nano Puff Vest and the Patagonia Down sweater Vest? I'm needing one or the other for a mid-layer to go skiing with my Patagonia Soft shell jacket? I would appreciate some feedback.
The Nano Puff Vest is insulated with a synthetic material called Primaloft. The Down Sweater is insulated with goose down. Both are very nice layering pieces for the purpose that you want to use them for. Down insulation typically has a longer life, provides more warmth for its weight and is more compressible. With down, though, you can't get it wet. On the other hand, Primaloft still retains most of its insulating properties even when damp. It is also usually a bit cheaper, still really compressible, and is hypoallergenic. Hope this helps.
I really like this vest. It insulates well yet is not really puffy and uncomfortable. I can wear it under a shell and it doesn't make you look like the Michelin man. Durable yet very lightweight. 800 fill weight and packs down small.
I wear them in the outdoors and also for casual wear.
So I have an older Mountain Hardware vest and was a little skeptical when the little lady surprised me with one of these. The Patagonia down sweater vest had half the bulk and twice the warmth of the old vest. This vest is easily packable and I take/use it everywhere. Great under the hard shell on the super cold days at the mountain, and packs easily in the dry bag for spring/fall river trips.
Well this seems like it would be perfect except:
WHAT SIZE???

Well this seems like it would be perfect except: WHAT SIZE??? I have a 39 inch waist; wear a size 45 jacket; This has a SLIM fit. I'm not slim. Any thoughts? Peter
Mike is correct. This is listed here and on Patagonia's website as a "slim" fit, but I find it consistent with the cut on the Down Sweater, which has a "regular" fit. Mike's sizing recommendation is spot on for your stats, and for me, I like a vest to be a bit more snug to hold in body heat, since they are sleeveless. I would go with the XL. Backcountry's return policy is so great, if it doesn't fit, just swap it out. Or do what I do, and buy both sizes, knowing that you're sending one back. You will have returned it before it even hits your credit card. Good luck.
Here are the Spring 2011 colors, including a view of the Nano Puffs and Down Sweaters and Vests. The biggest surprise for me was how nice the Ultramarine was; I really liked that and would consider it for a Down Sweater, Vest, or Nano Puff, too bad it's not available as a Nano Puff Hoody...
This is a great vest. I bought it as an extra layer to keep in my pack while skiing. It compresses down well into its own pocket. High quality construction; it looks like it'll stand up to some use. Super light but also quite possibly the warmest thing I've ever worn - I can only imagine how warm the full jacket is.
I bought a small and it fits well at 5'8" 150, although it's a bit snug around the waist. If you have more than 2 heavy layers on underneath it might not fit. I'd buy it all over again in a heartbeat.
I really enjoy this vest. It is usually the only additional piece of clothing I add at night on overnight winter backcountry trips. It is perfect for keeping the core nice and toasty and yet it packs down to almost nothing. It is durable enough to be used as a outer layer but light enough to be used as a underlayer.
I put it on once and I haven't left home without it since. My size small is a perfect mid layer fit. I would use the internal stuff pocket more but I'm always wearing it. I dread loosing this thing. It's hard to find on sale, and like most Patagocci its pricey; but I certainly think this vest is well worth the expense.
If you're the type that likes to wear the vest, buy this. Patagonia put out a great piece of gear with this one! The vest has a good fit (not baggy) and is extremely warm. Great item to keep in your pack for a go to layer for extra warmth. Packs small, super light weight, and warm. Great vest...buy it.
It'd stand up to it fine for a long time. Ripstop nylon is tougher than most people think. The weak spot in ripstop is abrasion resistance. Since one generally does not accumulate dirt, rocks and grit under backpack straps, it will last you a good long while. This is pretty much assuming your pack straps are nylon as well. Canvas straps and leather straps would be much harder on the fabric.
not too puffy. Bought this more for casual wear but wouldn't hesitate to wear it for tecnical stuff. nice and light. I had it at four stars but now that I have owned it for 6 months or so I bumped it up to a 5.
RKW, mine fits fine in the back and chest but the stomach area is a little big. I wear XL and my waist is 33". I could have probably got by with a Large.
Hmm - I find the core to be pretty trim - more so than some of the other brands' vests. I did find a huge difference between the M and L however - the L fit me like a big oversized box whereas the M fits me perfectly (6'/180lb/42" chest/30" waist).
Spent the last month searching out and trying every other lightweight down vest (high fill power/low-medium fill weight/under 10oz) because I wanted to try a brand other than Patagucci. I ended up with this one anyway because it fits better, is made better and just feels better than every other one I tried. Add to that the eco sensitive construction and ironclad warranty and it really is the bomb.
Also, for anyone looking to compare fill weight (as opposed to fill power), the fill weight according to Patagonia customer service is 57 grams/2.01 oz.
Great job on getting the scoop on the fill weight, that is good to know, as Patagonia rarely gives up that info. A full two ounces of down fill puts this right up there with several lightweight down jackets, including the mont-bell UL Inner Jacket, and the 22-denier shell is tougher than the shell on many of those. Paired with a hooded windshirt, this could be a very lightweight and warm setup for backpacking. Thanks, a big green thumbs up for you!
I love Patagonia's 800-fill down products. Extremely light, packable, and very warm. I own both the Sweater and the Vest. They are my go to pieces for shoulder-season camping/hiking and everyday wear throughout the chilly Utah winter. I'm 175lbs and 5'11'' and the medium fits great...not too snug, not too bulky. Great products, however they are on the pricey side, but worth it.
This down vest is perfect. It keeps your core warm on those 5-30 degree days on the slopes. Save the down sweater for the colder days. They are both worth having!!
I bought my husband this for xmas after he got it for me last year....it is so warm and the fact that you can scrunch it down into the inside zipper pocket is awesome - fits in a pack so well!!! It also looks nice...my husband likes to wear it everyday so on weekdays to work he wears it with his shirt, tie, and khaki's!!!
My husband has been wearing this vest under a jacket while he works outside in the cold and snow in North Carolina. He absolutely loves the warmth and flexibility it gives! A ski instructor at Breckenridge recommended the vest to us as he was wearing it under his jacket.
This is a perfect 'pack-always' gear item. It packs small, insulates well, layers well and is completely unnoticed in your gear until you need to pull it out. An integrated stuff sack makes it super easy to pack and I literally take it on every trip I go on, all 4 seasons.
Comfortable, lightweight, fitted. What more can you ask for from a piece of down clothing? I own the vest in pomegranate and the color really pops in person. I am 6'2" and 175# and I bought the medium and that still leaves room to layer a fleece underneath. Well thought out waist draw cord that hides the extra elastic cord when a more fitted look is desired. This vest is a great layer in cool and dry climates.
a must have - light, did I mention it was light weight, it is great by itself with a long sleeve shirt or under a jacket for extra cold days- I counted four people at the coffee shop this morning wearing this vest or the jacket- very popular out here in Reno
Truly a beautiful and immensely functional vest. Got the Forge Gray, color matches with the picture online, medium fits me perfectly, I'm a size 38 suit jacket, 5'8" 165 lb., 32" waist. It hangs great, doesn't puff up or feel stiff in the least, is very light yet amazingly cozy.
This thing is awesome! you can wear it alone or use it as a layering piece, but damn is it warm! When l first got it, l was a little skeptical, but after a chilly mid-morning bouldering session, l was very happy to own this! and the color? awesome!
I just got mine in the mail yesterday and so far its standing up to the wonderful New England weather very well! It adds that extra bit of Ompfh to my base layers, and l'm sure that come winter time this will find its way up many a mountain with me! First of hopefully many patagonia products!
best piece of gear i have ever purchased. as soon as i start moving in it, it is too warm, so insulation is not a problem. if you are active in cold climates, this is the piece you need.
I bought this as more of a casual around town piece of clothing, living in Denver CO. Typical uses for me include going to a Rockies game, running errands in the morning, or hanging at my sons lacrosse practice in early evenings.
For these purposes i love this vest, it's so light you barely know it's on, so you have full range of flexibility, yet for as thin as it is, it's remarkably warm. I'm actually planning on using under my soft shell at Loveland in a few days, and i'm expecting it work wonders. Oh yeah, and did i mention it looks good, I actually received a complement at a bar about it.
Fitting is spot on, i'm 6'5', 230 lbs and bought and XL and it fits perfect, not too light but not baggy.
My only negative is that i do find feathers popping through more than I thought I would.
Patagonia has hit it home with this little honor.... its ergonomic design fits really true to your shape and the 800 fill does the job like a champ. I got a med and it hugs me in all the proper places with plenty of space and range of motion. It's not too poofy as with some vests so if your looking for a light down vest that has nuclear warmth this is it!! look no farther and the built in stuff sack makes it great to pack when you get to shedding. Love it all around and will be buying more from patagonia in the future!!
So, here in Austin, TX, we don't have much need for 800 fill, 20 ounce down jackets; but a light-weight, solidly built down vest? Sign me up! When the temps around Central Texas drop down into the 40's, I reach for this vest and I'm comfortable the whole day. I haven't been on any trips since I picked up this little bundle of excellence, but it has served me well at the office, in the field and on jaunts around town. And for those of you that think the Autumn Leaf color is a bit much? False. Like the bottom line says, wealthy and attractive women, cougars and cubs alike, are mysteriously drawn to me when I leave my Marmot Zeus jacket in the stable on those chilly days and dawn the Patagonia Down Sweater Vest of awesomeness.
This vest was much slimmer fitting than expected (note the 'slim fit' sizing guide on this bad boy), but love it just the same. Wears easily under other coats or my recommendation the Patagonia Reversible Flannel Jacket. It is a little warmer than i expected so I find that i can't wear it indoors for too long, but I'm a warm person too, so that maybe not everyone's experience.Thin, ultra light weight, and easily packable makes this my second new favorite piece of outer wear this winter (first bing that reversible flannel jacket)
Finally, Backcountry.com needs a new product photographer as their web picture of the Autumn-Leaf is off to say the least. I originally saw this item from Patagonia's website, and was a little weary of buying when seeing it on Backcounry's...but correctly assumed that someone simply had the flash settings up a little high that day and I was correct. The real color of this item is much darker and more orange than yellow.
Adding this vest to my already deep quiver of down and synth insulation seemed crazy at first but started to make sense as a sit at my desk piece that easily transitions into a stuff into my bag to take to the boulders where good flexibility is key to my movement. As a friend once said, you have to have "flow" and as someone else likely said you also have to have "hustle". This year's colors are not quite as intense as they have been in previous years but the introduction of contrasting zipper colors has added that bit of panache that should set you apart from the crowd, or if you roll in a crowd as cool as mine, you'll fit in just fine.
