Take care of the frigid breeze blowing through camp by reaching for the ultralight, highly compressible Patagonia Women’s Down Sweater Jacket. Thanks to baffled 800-fill goose down and light, windproof recycled-polyester shell fabric, this streamlined puffy provides efficient warmth in any season for a scant 11 ounces. Stuff it into its interior pocket and throw it in your pack for long rock climbs, international travel, or a late-season backpacking trip.
Bottom Line:
Your do-it-all lightweight insulation layer, anywhere, any season.
I just ordered Patagonia down sweaters for the whole family (hubbie, three kids) as these are perfect for winter where we live and traveling elsewhere. I got all of them on sale except for my five year old's kids size small. I ordered the pearl white on sale and it's HORRIBLE. I can't believe Backcountry would even sell these at half price. The white material is so sheer you can see the feathers through it and it looks multi color grey. I'm not even going to try the birch white and am ordering black from another website.
I have other down jackets in various weights from Mountain Hardwear, MontBell, Columbia and Stoic and the Patagonia Down sweater is probably my favorite. Great fit, good construction and baffling, hardly any feather loss, no feather shifting, very warm for the weight, very packable, low bulk (fits well under a shell). There is some feminine shaping to this jacket so you don't look like you're wearing a box (like the men's version).
Based on the sizing chart, I should wear a medium, but I tried one on in a store and it was HUGE on me, even if I had on thick baselayers. A small fits me perfectly with room to spare for layering.
Not much more that I can add that the other 15 reviews have not covered. Super lightweight, less than a pound and packs down small for storage in your backpack. Very warm for the weight ratio. I wear this thing everywhere. Typical Patagoia quality and our jackets very rarely lose a feather.
This jacket works as a stand alone but most of the time I wear it under a shell. Fantastic vibrant colors!
One issue: I have heard some complain it fits kind of boxy and it does, that is the way the jacket fits but it is a non-issue to my wife and I because the jacket functions so well. My wife is 5'6" and 125 pounds and she bought the Medium for a little extra room but she could have got away with the Small.
Great jacket, super light and super warm. I'm a big fan of down and this jacket feels so toasty and light.
My one caution is that you may want to check some other sites and see if you can get a glimpse of the lining color. I bought the maraschino red which is meh (it's a really washed out looking red) but I wouldn't return it based solely on that--I understand that's the risk of online shopping. What I wasn't prepared for was the washed out kelly green lining--the colors look like an 80s christmas photo. And what the photos don't show is that unless you zip this jacket all the way, up you are definitely seeing the lining trim on the zipper and around the collar. Great jacket--awful color combo Patagonia!
I have a Patagonia Down Sweater, and I wanted to try something else although I truly love my own Patagonia DS. So, I tried a MontBell Alpine Light jacket. They fit surprisingly the same, but one trip out with the MontBell and I returned it. We wore fleece under our jackets (which I had done many times before with the Patagonia DS and had never lost a feather). But the MontBell lost a bunch in just one day. I wanted to try something different, but nothing beats the Patagonia DS! I can go down to 10 degrees, wear a t-shirt, fleece, and this down sweater, and be just fine (with hat and gloves, of course)...and I'm VERY cold natured...VERY. My daughter stays more warm than I do, and she would be quite toasty in the same conditions. You can see by the pic that it's a little large on my her (who's about 5'2", normal build), and is wearing a Fennel Large. Gotta have room to grow in because I can't afford too many of these! Oh, as far as durability, you can snag it while going through brush (as you can most jackets of this type), but it doesn't get pulled easily at all with just normal wear.
I just got this jacket in the Green Oasis and it's my new favorite go to. It's super light and very warm. The Down Sweater is great to be worn as streetwear alone or for layering underneath your shell for the perfect level of insulation while skiing if you tend to get cold quickly (I do). It fits true to size and looks great because it provides the warmth you need without adding bulkiness.
So Backcountry.com advertises these down sweaters as "starting at $120" but it turns out only two of the 32 color/size options (both XL's) are $120--the rest are $200. Bad form.
The two jackets at $120 were probably from last season's stock - the regular price is $200. I don't think Backcountry is doing anything wrong, it's exactly as they say. You should note that they were simply selling last year's colors at a discount along with this new season's stock - it's not like they were trying to trick you.
If you're looking for some good deals, you could try Backcountry's outlet - departmentofgoods.com - where everything from last season is discounted and you won't get confused by the new season's items. Check it out, it has GREAT deals. :)
The quality of Patagonia down is superb! Light, warm and minimal "quills" so almost loose no down. I have mine for over a year and only lost a couple of down. Patagonia listened and updated the fit. I wanted to get another one of this year's but unfortunately BC didn't have my size in the color I want. I ordered the white but it was not white as shown but more cream and dark down shown through the fabric, giving it a "mottle or dirty" appearance. Oh well, I'll just wait to get another one next season.
How does this compare to the Nano Puff synthetic sweater? I love
How does this compare to the Nano Puff synthetic sweater? I love that, but am looking for a warmer jacket that I can wear over my regular clothes for around town errands, etc. and the Puff doesn't quite do the trick in Minnesota in winter. I have a mega down jacket too for winter camping and REALLY cold days, but I'm looking for something thinner, more stylish for general use. Thoughts?
The Down Sweater is definitely warmer than the Nano Puff, and sounds like it would be a good option for you. Or for something even warmer, check out the High Loft Down Sweater from Patagonia. It's new this year and is basically a warmer, and longer Down Sweater. I think the High Loft might be just what you're looking for.
IMO, this is a little warmer than the Nano Puff but not by a huge amount. I wear this jacket on cold winter days but I always wear a baselayer under it.
This is my second Patagonia Down Sweater, and I can say conclusively that these rock! They are lightweight, can pack into their pocket, offer ample warmth and great styling. I plan to buy the purple one next!
I give this three stars because it's "adequate for the job" if you intend to wear this in a protected environment. I've call it my "inside jacket" because I am only confident when wearing for inside ventures or inside of another layer.
The shell is incredibly thin and not at all durable. Of course Patagonia was gracious to repair the massive tear resulting from normal use on a weekend river venture. To be honest, the patch material is awesome, i wish they would have patched the entire coat!
I usually love Patagonia stuff and am happy to spend a little more for the quality and guarantee. But I'm beginning to wonder if the quest for the lightest performance gear is compromising the quality and durability of their products. We'll just have to see...
Sorry you're not psyched on the jacket! You should take advantage of Patagonia or Backcountry's return policy/warranty and get your money back for a replacement. Call 800-638-6464 for Patagonia or 800-409-4052 for Backcountry.
I am looking for a light weight, easily packable down jacket.
I am looking for a light weight, easily packable down jacket. It will mostly be used while skiing and snowboarding in the Colorado backcountry as a mid layer under my hard shell jacket, as well as probably an outer layer hiking and biking in cool temps. I know it weighs a bit more, bit how does this jacket compare in bulkyness to Patagonia's Ultra Light Down Jacket? I have also been looking at MontBell's Light Down Jackets because they are pretty much unnoticeably light. Does anybody know which type of down jacket would be best for backcountry skiing in Colorado?
IMO, it is tough to beat this jacket and it doesn't feel bulky. It is so versatile, lightweight and packs down small. I don't think you would be disappointed with the performance.
When it's too frosty for the fleece and not frosty enough for the full-on down, this sweater jacket is just right. Light and packs up tiny so easy to have on stand-by just in case. Fit is true to Patagonia's usual sizing. Haven't had it long enough to comment on durability but the zip is solid and seams look beefy enough. Try though I might, I couldn't summon up one bit of constructive criticism.
This jacket is light, warm and very packable. I only have one negative thing to say about this - the fit of this jacket is not uniformed according to the size for all colors. Patagonia made some adjustments to the fit from previous year's version - narrower shoulders and chest; and wider in the waist so that you don't have this cinched in look (looking like a football player in uniform). Unfortunately, I think Patagonia reduced the shoulders and chest a bit too much. I tried on the red, blue and purple in XSmall and found that the purple fits about a 1/2-1/4 inch larger than the blue; the red fits about 1/4-1/8 inch larger than the blue. Conclusion: you need to try them on to see which one fits. I am 5'1" and compact 135lb with a mature figure. The purple fits comfortably snug, not tight, with room for a light layer, like a 220 Icebreaker top.
Focus more on the hip and bust measurements. We got a small for mom over the holidays. She's shorter than your wife and just a bit heavier. The small fit well except some tightness in the hips.
I wasn't sure about this at first, I thought it was too thin. Turns out it is just perfect! Not too bulky but still warm. I got the chocolate brown and have gotten lots of compliments on it!! You just can't go wrong with Patagonia!!
This down sweater has become my favorite piece of clothing. I've been wearing it everyday since I got it a few weeks ago. It's soft, warm, lightweight, and cars can see me when I wear it walking in the morning. I have the Green Oasis color. I also like the relaxed fit. I can wear a vest under it if it's really cold. Kind of expensive but worth it.
Just love it. True to size, fitted so you don't look like a "down balloon". If you are petite, your body can get lost in down garments. This one flatters! Goes with jeans or skirts. It is shorter than some jackets, but I am short waisted, so it is perfect for me.
It works so well for me...wear it to school a lot, then pack it into my book bag. I love how it takes no space at all. I Just wanted to comment on the length too. I actually have a longer torso and find that it fits just fine for me :-) You can't go wrong with this purchase. Lightweight, with just the right warmth and coziness!
I am interested in purchasing the down sweater in Pearl. How
I am interested in purchasing the down sweater in Pearl. How does this color differ from Natural? I am looking for a more grey tone rather than beige. Thanks!
Love this jacket. It is really warm and light, it hits at about the hip, and the sleeves were long enough for my lanky arms. The insulation is warm, but not bulky, so you can wear this jacket under a shell without feeling constricted.
I love this jacket! It fits great. I disagree with people who say it's boxy. I mean, it's a jacket.... Awesome for my mild, Southern winters, and the "mango" color really stands out. I never get lost from the group. =]
Patagonia's Down Sweater Jacket is one of my most favorite piece of gear I own. I love the fit. I am 5'7 and generally wear a medium (size 8 or 10) The medium is a fantastic fit. It is a very warm jacket but not too puffy. I can wear it out to dinner or camping. It is very versatile. I swear by this jacket.

Write your question here... I was skiing today at minus 20 Celsius and wore a 260 icebreaker , a thin skiing shirt and the downjacket and my skiing suit and was still cold. What is the recommendation to wear under the downjacket
S.W., Honestly is sounds like you've got enough layers up top, maybe your bottom half is getting cold? (or your hands?) Check out a Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Bottom for added warmth, the top is great too. Or possibly a lightweight synthetic vest, or an insulated shell on top in addition to your other layers.(Patagonia Nano Puff Vest or Patagonia Insulated Powder Bowl Jacket) -20 C is pretty damn chilly for sure and I'd personally need all the warmth I could get while sitting on a chairlift.
I would recommend Arc'teryx Phase SV Zip Neck on top of a good moisture wicking base layer.
If that is not enough to keep you warm, you could add the Arc'teryx Rho LTW on top. That is an incredibly warm layer combination, one that I use myself.
I love this sweater. I wore my sister's when I was visiting her and had to have one of my own when I got home. It's perfect for cool weather, Spring and Fall, and so comfortable.
I am 5'8'' and 138 pounds and 36b and I wanted this jacket for spring, so only to wear over a light layer; it's just too big. I haven't had a small size anything in ages, maybe that would work, but the bougainvillea are all gone...oh well. there'll be a medium one going back tomorrow!
I'm confused about what size to get and don't want to
I'm confused about what size to get and don't want to return/exchange. I normally wear Medium and have a 37"chest and fairly broad shoulders but a 26" waist and 36" hips. I don't want the jacket to be to tight across the top, but don't want to be swimming in it either. Any advice?
I'm 5'8'' and 138 # and a medium is really too big for me. bummer. the weight of the garment is also just a little too little for my liking. But I love the look of it, in principle. And the design features are all typical excellent patagonia style and thought.
I really want to love this jacket. I have it in bougainvillea, which is nice and bright, it's super lightweight, comfortable, and warm.
The down sides - The fit is a bit boxy and could use to be just an inch or two longer. The material is really flimsy and I'm too worried about it getting ripped or pulled to wear it for anything other than casual use without a hard shell over it. The biggest problem for me is that after only 2 months feathers are coming through the fabric at an alarming rate.
Overall, If I hadn't gotten it for a steal on SAC I would probably be returning it, and even still I considered it. But, it's very comfortable for casual usage and works as a mid layer for skiing.
Trying to figure out a size. I'm 5' 6" 139lbs, generally
Trying to figure out a size. I'm 5' 6" 139lbs, generally a medium, but i have a small chest and waist. Should I go medium in this too? Fingers crossed I'm getting this for my birthday!
Diana, Depending on the length you're looking for in the waist, you could almost go with a size small I think, but the waist would be a little shorter. Medium might be slightly looser fitting, but with plenty of length in the waist. happy birthday!
Overall, I really like this jacket. I do think its overpriced, but it seems to be the trend with all the retailers. Also, I was expecting this magenta jacket to have a little more red in it, but its definitely more hot pink. Probably my fault as I saw one by The North Face that had more red in it and just assumed that was what I was getting. The jacket runs a little bigger than I expected. The seam from shoulder to shoulder is perfect, but the jacket length is for taller individuals (Im 52) as is the sleeve length. Its all fine with me as I like to layer my clothing and it gives me ample space to do that and not feel like a sausage. Cant really say anything about the warmth since our winter has been a dud. I do like the jacket though and would recommend Patagonia AND Backcountry to everyone in the market for this type of jacket.
I ordered this jacket in Mango and liked the fit and color, however the Mango color/ material made all of the feathers inside easily visible and since some of them are dark, it made the jacket look dirty. It would have made a great warm layer, but since I had planned to wear it as a top layer, I had to return it. I don't know if the same would be true for the other colors that are available.
This will really cram down to a quite small package - it can be at the bottom of a pack with stuff crammed on top. It is also great because you can jam it into a small carry on and you have a very warm layer.
If your looking for a top quality, warm, feminine fit down jacket, check out the Marmot Venus down Jacket! Patagonia is more expensive and the fit is a bit baggy and the stitching is not as detailed so it appears to have less down. I returned the Patagonia down jacket when checked out the quality and fit of the Marmot down jacket. I now have two Venus jackets x-small and they have keep me warm in Colorado snow and in California coast chilly evenings. With Patagonia your just paying for the name, with Marmot you paying for the name and quality.
You certainly have a right to your opinion and I agree with you that the Marmot Venus is a nice jacket, my wife owns two of them along with one Patagonia Down Sweater. But, to say Patagonia is not a quality product is just wrong. My wife and I have worn our Down Sweaters for a couple years now and have had zero issues with the down, stitching or zippers. Same can be said with the Marmot, they are both fine pieces of gear.
I received this jacket as a Christmas present and I've worn it almost every day since. I absolutely love it! I'm 5'9'' and 135lb and I have an XS and it fits me really well. I can even wear a sweatshirt underneath and it is still comfortable. The shoulders are a tiny bit big, but otherwise this jacket fits like a dream! I wouldn't use it in place of a down "jacket" though, it is perfect under a shell in the rainy Pacific NW winters but I don't know if it would be warm enough in colder weather. The only problem I have is that it is loosing feathers really easily. I feel like I am constantly picking them off.
I'm 5'6" and 130#. Bought this in a small and am returning for an extra-small. The small was huge - went to the local outfitter, tried it on, and the extra-small fits much better, not only around the middle, but also in arm length. Hope this helps some of you ladies asking about sizing!
I'm 5' 9" and usually a size 6 (135 lbs. give or take) and wondering if any other lanky gals out there have a recommendation on sizing Small vs Medium. I am looking at the Marmot Venus and the MHardware Phantom jackets as well. Tried on a few down jackets in different brands in a store earlier in the season, and they all seemed to run really short.
I bought this sweater as a Christmas gift. Based upon many of the reviews I read, I ordered a medium for my medium-size wife. However, when she tried it on she found it didn't leave enough room for any layering underneath, so I returned it for a large. Other than that, it's been great, and she loves it.
This is an outstanding jacket and I've received many compliments. I work in Woods Hole, MA on Vineyard Sound where the wind can really kick up. This jacket is a perfect layer...sometimes a stand alone...sometimes under another. I ended up buying a white one too.
Ok so some of you have mentioned a fit difference from the 2008
Ok so some of you have mentioned a fit difference from the 2008 model of the down sweater for women. I wore a small then , and have longer arms, I'm 5'8" , 130 lbs. Should I continue to go for the small??
According to the size chart, I would be on the lower end of the "small" range. I'm glad I listened to the other reviewers and sized down - the xs still left plenty of room for layers, not a close fit but looks nice. Any larger and I think I would have looked like a line-backer.
The fennel color is matte, not shiny like in the picture. Too bad Backcountry doesn't have the Deep Plum color because it's gorgeous!
If you're looking for the warmest jacket in a light, packable style, this may be it. Nice for summits, belaying, and a "just in case" option. While I don't think it works as a stand alone piece in the dead of winter, it's great to wear when it's not quite cold enough to wear my thick, heavy "impenetrable fortress of warmth" winter jacket.
Nea, If you're main use for this is going to be as a mid layer under a shell you might want to go XS. I'd guess you're definitely right in between XS and S for your size and I think you could wear both comfortably. XS will be a little more comfy and less bulky under a shell though. hope this helps good lucK!
the jacket runs a little big...i made the mistake of ordering a medium because i wanted the extra length, but even with a thick hoodie underneath, the jacket was still really big. my main issue was that the dark feathers show through the white jacket making it look dirty, or spotted as another customer stated. that is the reason i will be returning it. otherwise i would have exchanged it for the proper size. very comfortable and warm though.
The fill is different. This jacket is 800 fill down, a natural insulator made from the puffiest of geese feathers. Down is the highest performing insulator available, lasts the longest, and is the most compressible. The major downside is that it is difficult to wash, and it loses all of its insulation when wet.
The Nano puff is made from synthetic insulation, specifically the top notch Primaloft One. Synthetic insulation's big plus is that it retains its warmth when wet, and is more easily machine washable.
Get the Down Sweater if you live in dry climates, as it is a little warmer for the weight (and a little warmer in general). The Nano puff would be better in an area that rains a lot.
I can't wait for things to cool down in LA ( and it does!) so I can wear my down sweater - love it, get compliments on it all the time for the fit and look. Have worn it in cold conditions in New York & the Sierras too.
Hello my name is veronica and i am from new jersey.i have been a loyal llbean customer for years.well i looked at these down sweaters on the internet and thought about for awhile because of the price and with three young children treating myself is very rare to say the least. I finally purchased the plum but really wanted the bright purple that is pictured but not an option.a little disapointed.i recieved my jacket and was in love at first zip...soo comfy and light .l am going to save for a hooded one next year.love it. vt
I was wondering what size of the Patagonia Sweater to take,
I
I was wondering what size of the Patagonia Sweater to take, I am about 5´2 and 132 pounds, I don´t want it to be to bulky but not to short either. Thanks
Go with XS - I am around your height and weight. XS fits with a light layer and S is roomier, allowing more layers, but then today's "layers" are not bulky. Also, the downsweater provide enough warmth and most of the time I wear it with only a light layer, like a 150 or 220 Icebreaker sweater when out snowshoeing.
I actually don't own this jacket, though I would love to. I am a very basic 5'5" and 125 pounds. I tried this on in a store this weekend before purchasing online, but I had to hang it back up. It was short in the waist and long on the arms, I felt like it would get drafty and am now shopping for a different puff. I loved all else about it-low bulk, high warmth, style and color- but it just looked goofy on me.
Patagonia's down sweater is my absolute favorite, go-to item for travel, sports, stadiums, pretty much everything I do. Stylish, lightweight, warm, can be used as an insulating or an outer layer. I'm returning the cerise because it's not quite the color I had anticipated, but I have the special edition fog and the prickly pear and LOVE them!!

Write your question here...I am interested in buying a black Patagonia Down Sweater but it is not available in size small. Will it become available anytime soon?
I am thinking about getting this sweater in white. A lot of times
I am thinking about getting this sweater in white. A lot of times with white down clothing, the down really shows through the liner and it looks fairly ugly / mottled. Is that the case with this jacket?
This jacket goes everywhere and does everything. It is well made, versatile, and comfortable. My main use is for back country hiking and mountaineering, but I also take it traveling to anywhere that might get cold. It packs easy, stands up well to wear and tear and most important, keeps me very warm.
This is a great jacket. It's light, very compressible and Prickly Pear is a fab color! The sizing is right on (5'5"/128 = small) and the features are plentiful. Note: this is not the jacket for very cold weather. This jacket will take off the chill on a 40 degree morning. I want something more substantial if it's much colder.
great for the go down jacket, very light weight....only problem is the extremely bulky arms on this jacket. make you appear muscular but maybe with time and some wear, it will flatten down a little. otherwise very convenient and light for everyday wear. i'm looking to replace my fleece with this.
The outer material for the Down Sweater is a lightweight recycled polyester with a micro rip stop in it for durability, and Patagonia's Deluge DWR coating for resistance to wind and water.
Took it to Maui to Haleakala. It packs small and light but keeps you very warm! Great for traveling! Then wore it skiing at Deer Valley 22F and was snug as a bug in a rug!!
This jacket is great for the transition times between seasons. It's a great active jacket--light, comfy, and easy to pack. I wore it running yesterday and it kept me at the perfect temperature. I have even fallen asleep in this jacket.
I got the teal color in Medium. I am 5'7" and it's a great size, even for wearing a zip up or sweatshirt underneath.
I bought the jacket on backcountry because they have the best prices but even better customer service. I am so impressed and grateful for how they treat and respond to their customers. I will continue to buy my outdoor wear and gear from this company.
Thank you for all your hard work and another great product at a great price! :)
I bought this jacket for the cold city I live in. I returned it - It did not live up to being the warmest jacket. I was even cold in the freezer section of the grocery store
Fantastic piece of gear. I bought it with Alaska summer backpacking in mind, with the idea that I would pull it out as a warm layer after hiking/to weararound camp. If I thought this would be the only time I would wear it, I was wrong. I wear this jacket nearly every day, whether on short winter hikes or to town for groceries. A note on sizing: I am 5'8", 145 lbs, and ordered a M. It's a bit big, which is fine for layering but I might choose a S next time. Well worth your money, folks.
I ordered the Amaranth and it's not quite as shocking as it's shown on this site. The sleeves are long enough, which is great so I can pull over my hands. The fit is a bit boxy esp. in the upper arm area and waist, not as fitted as The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - similar weight & warmth. I'm 5'3" 110 lbs and ordered the XS. Great color though!
Love it. Traveling for work to cold climates from California, this is the classic travel jacket that literally rolls up and fits in a Timbuk2 messenger bag. It's warm, it's stylish and I get compliments galore.
with patagonia you know you are getting quality, and this coat will not let you down. got it for a 5'7" girl with long arms and the small fit perfect. 800 fill is incredibly light and warm
Just received my Patagonia Down Sweater and could not be more pleased! I have always loved the Patagonia brand for their style, quality and long lasting products. This jacket is as good as it gets. I am 5'9 with long arms, and the medium is perfect.I really was drawn to the volcanic blue, but opted for the black, which looks great.Maybe the blue next time,I already want another one!
Got this for my girlfriend for Christmas and its her favorite jacket. She says shes warm in any regular every day activity by itself. Would definitely recommend!!!
I absolutely love this jacket. I bought it initially for a five month hiking trip and it performed beautifully. On a wet day, with a good rain jacket, it made the perfect layer for warmth. On chilly nights, it kept me toasty warm. It also doubled as a great pillow. The amount of warmth for the weight of the jacket is incredible. Because of it's constant use, I washed it every resupply I could, and it continued to perform extremely well. It also make a great layer for skiing on a cold day. Absolutely great jacket!
Patagonia updated the cut from previous year's and it is perfect! Now, you can wear it around town and not just on the mountain. Like another reviewer said it is warm and light, and not bulky under a water-proof shell (when needed). It is a "regular" fit, so size down if you want it fitted or size up if you want to wear layers under it. I purchased the real red - great color! ... go get one!
Personally, the fit is boxy. It is a little shorter in length than I typically like. It would be a much better coat if it had a more athletic cut to it. I am looking for an alternative. Any suggestions?
I agree. My Down Sweater from 2007 has a better fit. The 2010 version is cut a little wider through the waist, creating a boxy fit. I am so tired of clothing manufacturers designing for only the bigger people in the population. And I am not skinny, just fit and not overweight.
