The Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket is made for working under the hood of your truck or spending the night in a bivy. Patagonia made this jacket with a plush Synchilla Fozzie-the-Bear outer, a polyester mesh liner, and a windproof breathable membrane sandwiched in the middle. The Classic Retro-X Jacket packs a surprising amount of warmth for its light weight. The sooner you get this jacket, the sooner you'll be able to mat down the ¼-inch Synchilla for its real Classic look.
Bottom Line:
Classic style meets lightweight windproofing in Patagonia's Retro-X Jacket.
I bought one of these jackets around 1993. It was my main jacket for winter for many years. I left it at a new years party and my friend refused to return it conveniently because he love it so much.
This jacket is one of the greatest jackets ever designed. It has a thicker fleece exterior but it keeps you incredibly warm due to the wind-proof membrane. Pockets are large.
Patagonia makes quality products that are durable and this is one of the best.
The chest pocket and the neck is a maroon or burgundy color, as pictured. It is not black.. black oak is a type of tree, i'm guessing the colors of this jacket are made to somewhat resemble the colors of this tree in the fall.
This retro jacket give you a unique look that no other company has pulled off as well as patagonia. The windstopper layer makes this a perfect go-to jacket for all of fall and early winter. The quality of the jacket is exactly what you would expect for the price and the sizing runs true.

I am 5 foot 9, 150 lbs, and a 32 waist. I can't decide between a small and medium. I understand a medium would be better for layering, but would a small still be big enough to fit a sweatshirt under? How does it compare sizing wise to the north face Denali or the Patagonia better sweater?
The Retro-X is a superb casual fall/winter jacket. It has very thick piling and the Windstopper barrier is excellent. Mine is a size larger than I would normally wear (Med. instead of Sm.) so that I can use it as a jacket over a sweatshirt or other bulky garment. It wouldn't be my first choice for any sort of hike or other strenuous activity, as it isn't very breathable, but it is perfect for around town/hanging out. And...Patagonia comes out with new color options every year so check out older seasons if you don't see one you like from the newest season.
I got the women's version of this jacket last fall and fell in love with it. It's really warm - it blocks the wind and is perfect over just a t-shirt even in Colorado winter, also it's eco-friendly, being made of recycled polyester, and on top of everything, it's patagonia quality so it lasts forever.
My boyfriend needed a new fleece so I thought of this right away. He loves it almost as much as he loves me now! Girls - if you want your boyfriend to look cool and owe you a good present, I highly recommend the Retro-X.
My blood runs pretty warm and I tend to get pretty hot inside
My blood runs pretty warm and I tend to get pretty hot inside most jackets with a waterproof-type membrane - but this one is just windproof. I can't ever get a feel for how well something like this breathes. How stuffy is this jacket?
Also...I am about 5'11" and 175-180 lbs or so - what size?
This is more of a style, wear around town jacket, and a warm one at that. It is hot and heavy. if you're looking for a jacket that breathes well during aerobic activity, get a softshell.
This is a fabulous jacket! It is cozy and very warm and very cool looking! I am 6' 7" and 250 lbs. and the XXL fits perfectly. I can't recommend it highly enough. Its wind blocking ability is very high.
Hi -
I'm 5'7 165 lbs... 32 waist with a shorter torso
Hi - I'm 5'7 165 lbs... 32 waist with a shorter torso and athletic build. I am always between a small and a medium in shirts and jackets. I have read this jacket is a tad big and I'm looking for a replacement for my frazzled monkey man (medium - but they ran a bit small)... i'm looking for something I can throw on over a t-shirt and use as a layer under my shell for skiing and other winter activities. I'll rarely have more than a t-shirt or other base under the retro. That said - would a small be too small - or would it fit perfect? I'd imagine a medium would give more freedom - but I also think the retro might stretch just a hair over time. Thanks for any advice....
JDF, Thanks for the question. I'd say you should give the small a shot and rest assured that Backcountry's return policy will help you out if it doesn't fit. I think since you only want to wear a T underneath, or use the fleece as a mid layer that the size small might possibly give you the perfect fit. Hope that helps, good luck
The wind blocking layer really works and the jacket is quite warm. i would call it more of a casual/around town/maybe a day hike fleece. It's not the most packable, i wouldn't take it in the backcountry with me. i could see wearing it as a thick midlayer under a shell on the ski hill tho. All in all, i bought it for casual wear so i am happy with it. The vest is a good option too.
I can't speak to the older version but this new one does have a really wide waist... and no drawstring. Patagonia was probably trying to appeal to a greater percentage of the American market... or should I say "wider". Ugg... fat Americans... I just puked a little in my mouth.
First off, I'm 6'4 190-200lbs (depending if its the holidays) and i fit very well in size large. I bought the black retro x with the grey pocket.
Used this from camping and hiking to everyday use in the wind, rain sleet and snow up here in the pacific northwest. Never has let me down. People have commented on it on several occasions and have even gotten a few random people asking if they can feel the fabric.
Over the past year and a half of owning the jacket the only wear and tear is under the elbows where the fleece has gotten a little matted while driving or resting my arms. Does not affect the integrity whatsoever. And can be remedied by rubbing your hands over it for a few seconds to kind of rough it back up.
He loved it. Gift for the BF...and i was uncertain about size as Patagonia usually runs a bit small. He normally wears an XL so i was in a quandry..but the XL fit fine. Plenty big (he can wear a heavy shirt or two layers under it).As stated in previous posts, it is looser at the bottom, but in my case that was what i wanted...many of the snap tees i have ended up with because they are too tight on him (too big on me).I would say this Patagonia item was pretty true to size. Thanks to those who helped me on the chats on this one trying to figure out size. its a KEEPER!!!!
It FIT!!! I held off on doing the review until after gifting it because i really thought it may have been too large. Patagonia has a tendency to run a wee bit on the small side, but after "chatting" with some of the customer service reps who checked and re-checked i was pretty comfortable with ordering the XL. Recipient is 5' 8", longish torso(short legs) and broad chested...this fit fine...a wee bit large, but i know a Large would have been too tight in the chest. It is loose around the bottom which I liked but some readers complained about (cold air etc) but if it had been tight i think it would have hung a bit funny. This was a great bargain...and "recipient" is quite happy with it..and he is a hard one to buy for..but he is a sucker for patagonia and fleece.
Kevin, I think an XL Retro X would fit you well. You might be able to sneak into a large, but overall I think the XL will be more functional and comfortable.
Love how wind resistant this is, it is a little baggy in the arms, The zippered pockets zip opposite way than used to, but nothing bad. No drawstring at waist so have draft once in a while. Great with sweater or extra layer underneath. The high loft i get confused for a muppet sometimes,
Okay I'm a bit of a strange build but I'd really like
Okay I'm a bit of a strange build but I'd really like this jacket for the colder seasons..... Currently I stand about 5'6" and I'm about 170 lbs and I'm really not fat promise But I have EXTREMELY broad shoulders and muscular arms....normally a medium T-shirt is tight on my shoulders but fits well on the rest of my body...however a large is perfect for my shoulders but looks like a dress on me...I'd like to get the size right on this so I don't have to play the ship/size game....anyone have any ideas about what size could work?? I don't mind if the fit is a BIT loose or tight I'm used to that. Any advice?
Hey Jared, I'm thinking you'll be pretty happy with a medium. If you're shoulder are super broad it might be a tad tight, but I can't imagine it being that bad. Large would be good in the shoulders for sure, but possibly to long in the sleeves and waist. Hope that helps! Good luck.
I'd like to know what Patagonia's thought process is behind not putting a hem drawstring on their fleeces. Its such a simple but crucial thing that would really put them over the top. Without it they're technical fleece becomes just casual wear or mere fashion. And even that will be drafty casual wear....Its a pity, especially for the price.
great jacket, really warm and perfect for almost all conditions. one and only downside is that it has no scrunchies on the bottom especially since it is supposed to be a windproof jacket.

If you want the warmer, more technical of the two go for the R4. Both are fully windproof, and the Retro X is a great jacket, but the R4 has a loftier fleece inside and out that makes it one of the warmest, if not the warmest fleece jacket on the market.
Just got this jacket in the mail this morning, LOVE it. I am guilty for being addicted to fleece jackets and I have a very large assortment, and I am very excited to put my first Patagonia jacket to good use. The only downside to this jacket is the lack of warm pockets, but this is a very small issue. For reference, I am 5'9" 195lbs, average build and the large fits great with room for a base layer. I probably could have gone to medium but I usually wear something under.
While that specific color is not currently being made, Patagonia does still make the Retro X and releases new colorways every season and something similar is bound to come along. I think the company is aware of the desire for some of their old-school colors and while they are making items in colors that are friendly to the mass market (read: neutral), they will sometimes offer other options.
Like this coat for one reason only. It is warm enough to wear on it's own most of the time, and it is casual looking enough that when I go out I do not look like I just came off the mountain. Not bad for chilling around your base camp either. Only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is I feel that a jacket that is designed for this purpose should have warm pockets which the Retro-X doesn't have. Other than that there is nothing I can complain about as this jacket does what it was designed for. Well done Patagonia
Zach, I have the same build and have the medium which fits my gorilla length arms but is a little large around the middle. If you don't mind a slightly looser fit around the waist a medium is good.
This is an excellent jacket and I totally agree that it is windproof. Pretty comfortable, but like others I agree that the sizing is much different than other Patagonia products. The arms and and mid-section are very loose fitting, which for a technical layering piece is a bit annoying. The biggest problem with this jacket is the fact that there is no elastic pull tighteners at the bottom of the waist, which I find very odd for a windproof technical piece. I am rather skinny and I found wind to be free flowing through the bottom of the fleece. In the end this is a great timeless fleece.
Hey. I like the gravel color, can you tell me what it looks
Hey. I like the gravel color, can you tell me what it looks like in real life? Is it light or dark, it looks like it might have a brownish tint, does it? Or is it just a simple gray?
Mike, gravel in the Retro X is a simple grey, honestly not too dark and not too light(darker than Feather Grey pictured above). There's no brown in it, the image does make it look like it though.
A functional, well-made fleece jacket. It blocks the cold winds here in Vermont with no problem at all. My only gripe is regarding the sizing. The cut seems larger than other Patagonia models, especially around the midsection. I know they advertise it as having a "regular" fit, but if you are trim it ends up being a relaxed fit around the abdomen and arms. The extra size would be useful for layering, but I have been plenty warm with just a t-shirt underneath. I'm 5'8" / 145lbs and wear a medium. You will look sharp in this jacket.
Can't beat the classic look & quality of Patagonia Retro Jacket! However, sizing can be a little tricky. I am 5'10", 160 lbs. The medium's arms fir me well, but the cut is a little too trim (athletic) for my taste. The large is a little too big all around, but I went with the large because I like jackets a little oversized. All in all, looks great, feels substantial and really is a CLASSIC.

hello there,
The detail photos show what appears to be a natural coloured fleece with blue trim on the hem and cuffs. Is this option available as it doesn't seem to be in the other photos?
This is a great cozy and warm jacket. It's the perfect jacket for kicking it around town with your buds or chillen around a bonfire for the evening. Great style along with great warmth and performance for just kicking it. The windproof membrane is great for blocking out the wind during chilly walks to the bar or around town. The fitting is a little weird but is actually pretty cool. It tends to fit a little baggy and short but its super comfy and looks good on. Plus you'll have all the ladies wanting to lay their heads on your shoulder. Get one and have a rad time chillen out.
im thinking about buying this jacket or the simple synchilla
im thinking about buying this jacket or the simple synchilla jacket, i can afford both of them but i need alot of other gear to, which one should i choose
this will definitely be warmer overall than the Simple Synchilla since it's windproof. so it depends what you're looking for. Simply Synhilla might be a better all around layering piece where the retro X is more of a jacket
After staring at this fleece multiple types online, I decided to purchase one. At first sight I was a little dissapointed because the inside seemed weird and uncomfortable and it seemed rather stiff. Also I wasn't sure if I liked the long look of the fleece. I have grown to love my retro x now. The windwall is great and the heavy fleece keeps you very warm. I will say that the cut is a little short, comes right to my waist. This is a great product which I will use for years. You'll stick out from the sea of north face denalis.
Some fleece wears down after a while, particularly on the elbows.
Some fleece wears down after a while, particularly on the elbows. It some jackets it even wears flat. Does this jacket stand up well to long term wear? Does the fleece wear flat?
it wears extremely well. My roommate's had this vest for years of heavy use and it still looks great. If at anytime you're not happy with how it's holding up Patagonia will replace it for you no questions asked.
It is a warm coat and pretty nice, however I do not like mine. I got a large because that's what my M.H. monkey fleece is, and I thought it would fit the same. I'm 5'11 175 lbs, and the coat looks really big on me. The way its cut and the wind proof liner cause it to be bulky and loose. I'm going to send mine to my dad because I think it will fit his gorilla arms and beer belly better. Note- a medium might have worked...but waited too long and didn't return it.
This jacket is hands down the warmest fleece I own. The thing I love most about the jacket is that it goes anywhere. It keeps me warm on the slopes or out on the trail, but it also looks good out on the town. Quality that's made to last, a purchase you won't regret.
I ordered the Chili color and it was really really bright red (I guess the name should have warned me). I got the XL for my boyfriend for Christmas, he is 6'3" and weighs about 230 pounds and the jacket did not fit well at all. It was long enough and fit well in the chest but it was huge in the waist and sholders. The outside is super soft and cozy, but since it is windproof the inside is not soft at all. Overall the jacket is cute on the outside but fit terrible.
Looking at the jacket in pictures, its looks as if the jacket
Looking at the jacket in pictures, its looks as if the jacket itself if very short. Can someone tell me if it regular length or if it does fit short? Thanks.
Hmm, what can I say about this. The 1970's shag rug carpet look is actually pretty awesome. Not only does it look warm, it is warm and windproof! Who knew the shag carpet could be so functional. It's a little on the heavy side and does not breath the best, but it's not the intended purpose. What I love is you get a great functional piece that you can use at base camp or at a bar and still be comfortable.
One size problem that may only affect me. The medium fits perfect all the way around except the neck is too tight while the large is a little bulky but fits my neck great. I went with the medium and the neck stretched out enough to fit perfect. Btw, I am 5'11" and 150 and have what I think is a normal neck.
The Retro-X Jacket is an incredibly warm fleece jacket. It blocks the wind very well. It is great for late fall and early winter use. It is actually too warm for me to wear in cool weather especially if I am doing something active. It is cut generously and provides excellent range of motion. My only complaint is that the fuzzy material gets matted down from the seat belt or on my back when I sit in the car.
I was a little skeptical at first with the Retro but Patagonia stuff fits me perfect (Size L, athletic build) and the Rustic Brown is a departure from black and blue which everyone is sporting. Since the price was half off I took a chance and smiled wide when I saw the quality, felt it's heft and knew right off this puppy will keep you toasty. This will be my hanging around jacket so I'm looking forward to the first frigid morning.
Let me start by saying I love this fleece. I am 6'4 and wear an XL in all patagonia tops/jackets such as the R2 and the R1 flash. This being said the fit on this is weird, the chest is far too big for me but when I tried going to the L size the sleeves were too short, just something to keep in mind. I call this my cookie monster fleece, great look, blocks wind like a champ, too heavy for trail use although would be fine for belaying. 4 stars because the fit is not true to other patagonia tops and there is no draw cord on the bottom.
I love the style of this fleece. Its my go to fleece for around town fall/early spring. Not technical enough for physical activity, but great looks. I like that the jacket gets new colors every year, so you don't wind up with people wearing the same jacket at the bar (Denali anybody?) It feels very light for a 300 fleece, and the mesh back breaths better than other 300 fleece. On the down side, it doesn't stop wind as well as other brands of similar weight.
I'm tall but lean 6'2" and 180lbs. I ordered a medium which was way too small in the body and arms so I returned it for a large and the body length and arm length is OK but the body doesn't fit as snug as I'd like it to (read loose).
Other than that, this jacket is perfect. I've had several ladies just want to touch it. :-)
i'm more huggable when i'm wearing this. it's soft and unbelievably wind resistant for the fluff of the material. not good for precipitation and layering is tough because it's a bit puffy, but sweet for getting hugs and staying warm in not wet conditions.
