I bought these for a friend of mine and here is what she had to say about them: These pants are great! They’re soft, stretchy, and warm enough for my spring cross-country skiing and snowboarding needs. The pant bottoms seemed quite small when I looked at them online, but once I got them in person, they opened up and are big enough to fit around my snowboarding boots. My biggest concern when buying my pants was the size. Although the pants have stretch in the waistline, I’d go up one size than you usually wear. I usually wear a small or a 4 in pants (I’m 5’4” and 120), but the 4 was too tight for comfort, and left no room for thermals. Plenty of pockets for storage. All around these are a good pair of pants for keeping dry and warm.
Super pants! From sport climbing in J-Tree to backcountry skiing in the Wasatch and even mountaineering in Ecuador, these pants have been there for me. They kick ass - durable, lightweight, flexible, they shed light rain and dry fast. They are best for cool weather - spring, fall, and winter. The guide pants do stretch but they generally fit an athletic bodytype best. You'll have these pants for years.
The Alpine Guide pant wasn't designed to be a full on resort ski pant, and isn't reinforced at the cuff. If you're just backcountry skiing and not riding lifts all the time it will be plenty tough for you. The Backcountry Guide Pant is another soft shell pant from Patagonia that offers a little more reinforcement.
I bought these for ice climbing, backcountry touring and mountaineering. I'm 5'4" and I bought the size 4. Definitely high waisted, and they fit true to size around the waist (sometimes a little tight depending the meal I ate). Would probably go a size bigger next time. Can fit long underwear or fleece pants under them without a problem and they're very comfy and flexible. They shed rain and are fairly wind resistant. Great all around winter activity pants!
They are somewhat high-waisted. I am 5'4", and they definitely come to my natural waist (although not up into my ribcage, as some high-waisted pants can). Personally I find this waist height more comfortable for winter camping/hiking pants. I love mine, I have the brown and just ordered another pair in black, they're very comfortable. (I wear either a 6 or an 8 in Patagonia depending on the style, and I went with the 8 in these so I can wear my long underwear comfortably underneath.)
I got these for climbing Kilimanjaro. Loved them. Were excellent when it was cooler and breathed well. Blocked wind and resisted snags. I usually wear a 6 and ordered an 8 so I could fit baselayers underneath at the colder temps for the summit climb. For me they came to the navel.
By far the best softshell pants I've ever worn/bought. At first I thought they might be too stiff however I tested them out during a particularly nasty day on the slopes, they shed the precip quite nicely and even at -10 with a "Whinny the Poo" blustery wind I was toasty warm with just a light pair of merino long johns underneath. I will be trying them out on a summit trip soon, but so far I love them. Worth every penny. The only downside is I am 5'2" so they are a tad long with just hiking boots, but they fit great over ski boots.
I can't decide between the Patagonia Alpine Guide Softshell
I can't decide between the Patagonia Alpine Guide Softshell pant and the Arc'teryx Gamma AP Pant...both seem to be suitable for all kinds of outdoor activities in the cold. Any differences in the size S fit? Inseam? I prefer longer pants - Help!
The arcteryx comes in tall for longer legs, but the alpine guide has long legs per size, so either or. I went for these pant since the arc AR only comes in grey now, but they seem pretty much the same! these are wider at the bottom, so might be a better fit depending on your boots.
I bought these for commuter cycling in winter and for teleskiing. The local resort's not open yet, but I've given them a workout on the bike. Without a rear fender on my bike, the wetest days do soak through the rear. But on every other day, they're perfect. And they're styled nicely enough that on the days I'm really lazy and don't feel like changing, I can get by wearing them to work (no swishy sound). They wash well. The ankle still needs to be cinched up a little more to prevent contact with the chain, and the weight of the ankle gusset is somewhat noticeable during the pedal stroke, but I got used to it. Plenty flexible--I don't feel restricted at all. Great fit, true to size. Perfect weight--not too hot, not too cold--in temps so far ranging from teens to 60s. And I'm so happy they're in a different color than every black thing I own!
I'm looking for a softshell primarily for winter biking commutes and cross-country skiing, have a heavier insulated pair of downhill ski pants already. If you weren't trying to use these for downhill & biking would you go with a lighter pair of pants or are these not to heavy?
These pants are terrific! i have used them backpacking in the Grand Canyon and in Alaska. and they worked perfectly in both places. I am usually a cold hiker and i was perfect not to cold, not to hot. i dont think i will ever wear a different pair pants backpacking again. they also have been great for rock climbing in the winter. overall great pant. in really bad rain, i recommend a rain layer though.
Since I bought these pants I haven't taken them off. They are simply amazing - much more that I expected! The pockets have beautiful, durable zipers and the detailing at the waist and at the hem is striking. They are wonderful protection against cold, wet weather, yet can be worn arouned the house in comfort. How did I ever get by before I found them??? I ask myself that question every day !
