Outdoor Research Verglas Gaiter - Women's
Safety in the mountains involves moving quickly over varied and difficult terrain. Outdoor Research designed the Women's Verglas Gaiters to carry light and travel fast. Whether you're kicking steps up a fragile snow finger, skinning across a glacier, or negotiating a hairy bushwhack, you can't afford to snag, rip, or be bogged down. Designed specifically for women, these gaiters feature increased volume in the calf and a shorter overall length. The asymmetrically-cut boot section provides a secure fit with leather or plastic boots, making the Verglas a functional, stout, backpacking gaiter as much as it is a serious mountaineering gaiter. The ultra-light, waterproof, breathable 3-layer Ventia leg section and the coated 500d Cordura boot section make this gaiter a more packable alternative to the OR Crocodiles. A nylon-supported rubber instep strap pulls the gaiter down and flush with your boot to seal out snow and debris. Offset the 1.5in-wide hook-and-loop front closure if you need to make room for insulated pants.
Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.
Hello. Could i know the weight of Verglas Gaiter? Than you for your help in advance.

Decent, not great, gaiter

I just used these for a backpacking trip in southern Utah with a ton of river/stream crossings. They were pretty good, not great. They did get wet, and thus I got wet, in water that wasn't that deep. However, they dried quickly and were okay for the most part.
Seem to Run a Little Big

According to the size chart, I should take a medium (I wear an 8 shoe), but it was WAY too big. I had to return the medium and get a small. The small fits great on my bare legs, hiking pants, and insulated snow pants. I think I have an average size calf. I like that the instep strap has a buckle (rather than a string you tie) so it's easy to adjust them to use with different shoes. I've only used these a few times so far, but am happy with them and would buy them again.

Would these gaitors work for a ski trip across Greenland to be worn with Alpina NNN BC boots. Thanks

The fitted nature of this gaiter assures that if properly fit, snow and rain will stay on the outside where it belongs. Having said that, you want to make sure that they fit snugly around your boot.
I would also suggest that you consider the Croc Gaiter for women. It has the same fitted nature but is made from more durable lower fabric and the Gore upper will breath better over the long haul.

First Time Use - Warm, Comfy & Functional
January 20, 2011
Ordered Men's med because I wanted it a couple inches higher on my calf. A little wider than women's I think, but cinches close enough. Buckle allows for great variety of fit & shoes. Never slipped or let in wet snow. Even kept my calves warm while snowshoeing. I'm very happy with them and so is my husband w/the ones I ordered for him.
This gaiter has bite!

Easy to put on, easy to adjust, and good-looking, too, these gaiters are the perfect upgrade to the baggy velcro balloons I used over the past 15 years. Fitted to my foot and leg in several places, the gaiters fit divinely and protect throughout the worst kind of wet snow. I had no seepage whatsoever after a 2 hour ski through a heavy snow (though perhaps if I'd stood there for an hour...) The gaiters hold in a reasonable amount of warmth and also block out the wind. Once again - great product, OR.
carry light and travel fast...

I take good care of my gear, but also play a little rough and these have held up nicely. I use them for ice climbing and mountaineering. They're perfect for the lightweight fanatic and durable enough for moderate adventuring. They only thing they are lacking is a replaceable instep strap, but if you added that it would compromise their light weight. I found them true to size and female specific. I love 'em.
If you want bombproof, buy the OR Crocodiles. The Vergalas are exactly what they say they are: light and functional.

Looking at the women's size chart I don't know which size to order. I have very large calves at 19 inches. What size should I order that will fit mine? Would men's gaiters fit my calves better than women's? Also, would I be better off buying the lower ones? I use them mainly for winter hiking (with crampons) and snowshoeing.

I am curious to know what you ended up buying for gaiters. My calves are 19" also and I am 5' tall. What size and what brand did you eventually settle on? Thanks for your help.

These gaiters were a life saver on a climb up Kilimanjaro. Kept me dry and as clean as can be expected trudging through the mud. Great buy!

I have large calves (16 inches) and size 9 boots. I can't decide which size to get. Some of the comments say they run large and some say they run small. Also, is there a strap at the top that cinches them tighter?

There is a strap at the top to cinch them down and i would probably suggest the large because of your performance calves! Plus it is ok to have a little extra fabric, you can always pull them down a little over the boot.

Awesome times a thousand

I can't believe I've been cycling year round for almost 5 years and hadn't discovered gaiters! I LOVE these! They work well for riding in snow and rain and all the crap in between that is part-and-parcel of winter up north. I am fairly average in height and build, and the gaiters fit perfectly over my cycling calves (even with 2 pairs of socks, long underwear and pants on under them), and the strap fits snugly under my boots (no slippage, and they don't hinder getting in and out of toe cages/straps). A++
Are the sizes geared toward shoe sizes? I bought a size medium
Are the sizes geared toward shoe sizes? I bought a size medium and used them a couple of times...they fit fine around the boot area, but don't quite clear the top of my calf and slip down a bit. I am considering exchanging for a size L but not sure if that will change the size lengthwise.

They are based on shoe size, so the length will be different in the L than in the M.

I had ordered a pair of gators from another company. When I saw a pair of gators my husband had ordered from you, I returned the previous pair and got these. I love 'em! Really protect from fox tails and easy to get on and off. They cover way down past the top of my shoes.
Do these protect against snakes?
Do these protect against snakes?

They will serve as some protection, but they are not made for snake protectionNo non-venomous snake (in North America) has teeth any where near long enough to get through this material. The only (only!) thing that would be of any concern would be very large pit vipers (read: big ol rattlers). Snakes that big are tremendously rare in the wild and, trust me, they do not want to tangle with you. Herpetologists that stomp into rattler country on purpose wear loose fitting long pants over regular ol hiking boots and carry a long stick. You are good to go!

Got these for my sister for Christmas. She absolutely loves them for hiking and snowshoeing in the Northeast, keeping her legs dry and providing a little extra warmth. She wears a size 7 or 8 and the small gaiters fit her very well. From my experience with OR men's gaiters as well - they seem to run big, go at least a size down from the size chart.
Performed very good

I bought these gaiters for a NOLS backpacking course in Alaska. I was surprised by their waterproof ability. When the river was below the blue section, no water entered my boots. The sole strap stayed in perfect condition (unlike my boots!) and I didn't even buy those protectors most people had. Overall, they held up very well and still look brand new. Other people on my course did not take as good care of their gear, though and their gaiters looked pretty worn by the end of the month. As for sizes, I am 5'5" average build, size 8.5 boot, and the medium fit perfect.

These gaiters are great! Easy to get on, lightweight, keep the snow out, and they look great. Great choice.
Gaiters, or not.
March 14, 2008
These gaiters were adequate, but would have faired better if the sole strap material were of the same durable quality as the upper. For the price, one could probably not do much better, but to be honest, the chincy sole straps are not expected to last under moderate use. Tight for big calved wearers.
