Northwave Vertigo Pro Size

As much as I liked the shoe, unfortunately I had to return it twice without purchasing based on the size being too small. They run small and the sizes are incorrect.

Northwave Vertigo Pro Shoe

By:
October 10, 2011

I'm a very experienced bicyclist. Over the years of racing I found to actually not prefer the ratchet mechanism on many of the current higher-end offerings. I went back to a three-velcro strap system beginning again on my last pair, and loved the ease of use.

Five years later, I chose this North Wave Vertigo as my shoe. This shoe has everything I like; stiff carbon sole, good ventilation, subtle graphics and a light color. The lines of this shoe are remarkably similar to the Time Pedal System Garnae's used by Greg Lemond in the 80's and 90's; I like that fact. The heel arch doesn't seem to sit quite as high as I've usually enjoyed, but so far everything seems fine.

I'm currently riding with Speedplay pedals. I had to use the cleat conversion plates, but for me this is a good thing. My old shoes utilized the conversion plates too; so as both shoes and cleats have similar stack heights, I won't have to adjust my saddle height when using my older shoes on the off rain day.

So far, Great Shoes!

I'm looking for shoes for my husband to use for indoor spinning bikes. Are these compatible for that use? Or can you suggest a different option.

Northwave makes a mountain bike shoe that accepts SPD style cleats and it looks EXACTLY the same as these except that it has some additional sole material around the outside of the shoe (which I love because then the metal cleats don't come in contact with the ground when you walk) and the price is nearly the same if not exactly the same. You can check them out on RealCyclist's sister site for mountain bike stuff HucknRoll.com, in the shoes section, naturally.

In my experience all spin bikes are set up for SPD cleats in their pedals. SPDs use a two bolt mounting pattern and these shoes are setup for only three hole. Generally a Mountain Bike shoe that is meant to use SPD type cleats is a better option for spin. If you really want the stiffness of a road type shoe, make sure it is one that can accept both 2 and 3 hole types of cleats.

Great so far - as expected

By:
December 2, 2011

These are my first pair of bicycle shoes and I went with these shoes because the price point was great and they appeared to be quality shoes.

This is definitely the case. (so far)

They appear to be much higher quality than what you might expect from a $40 pair of shoes. I purchased these with the intention of using them at my local velodrome.

SIZING:
The sizing chart the Realcyclist website is just not correct. I wear a 10.5 or 11 in US, which would have had me in some size of shoes that was way off. I went with what I normally like to ride, which is a 44.5, and they fit GREAT!

I chatted someone on the Realcyclist website, in hopes of them offering me some experience on fitting the shoe, however they refereed me to the posted sizing guide and that was that. Not very helpful.

Yes. Any 3-Hole cleats will work with this shoe. Shimano SPD 2-Hole cleats will not.

Nope. The PD-6500 pedals use the 2-hole SPD cleats. These shoes ONLY work with 3-Hole cleats (Look, Delta or Keo/Shimano SPD-SL)

HI I was just wondering if these are non clip-on shoes for biking. I have regular pedals on my road bike and have no idea if these are clip-ons or regular shoes (which would be a nice upgrade to my bulky running shoes). Any help would be nice. Thanks

Ralph, the first quetion you want to ask yourself is how do I use my bike? If you use it for commuting or getting around town and need a shoe you can walk in off the bike you want a 2-hole cleat shoe and some spd pedals. If you are all about performance, go with a 3-hole spd-sl, look style cleat. Some shoes support both 2 and 3-hole cleats but usually they are not good commuter shoes.

I would buy both shoes and pedals at the same time. Having one or the other won't work very well. When you have both, they work as a system to benefit the rider. And the cleats come with whichever pedals you choose! Most road pedals use the common 3-hole bolt pattern or include adapters to fit.

HucknRoll.com is RealCyclist's sister site for mountain biking stuff and they sell the mountain version of these shoes for the same price that accept the SPD style cleat (2 Hole).

Hi Phillip,
As answered above, the Vertigo Pro only accepts the standard 3-hole cleat configuration. Not to worry because Northwave also offers the Touring model for 2010. This is the same upper with an SPD or similar mtb/commuter style cleat configuration. The new Touring sole is a a low profile off the bike friendly design with a built in power shank to give you the energy transfer needed to get you down the road.

This shoe is non-SPD compatible. There are other road shoes out there that are but the will only accept three hole standard cleats.
