Upon researching various well known brands of cycling shoes (i.e.Specialized, Bontrager, Sidi), I stumbled onto Northwave. Not knowing very much about the shoes or the company (other than being a sponsor of Team LEOPARD Trek), I was a bit skeptical. Let me tell you....these are by far the best carbon cycling shoes I have ever used! You will not be disappointed. One tip when figuring out your size....get one full size bigger (this will allow you 1/4 inch of "wiggle" room for your toes.) For instance I am a 12/US in normal shoes. So I purchased a 13/US and they are perfect! Enjoy!
Took your advice and got a size bigger. Im a size 12 so I got 13s. And of course they were too big. I read multiple reviews saying to get a size larger than normal, and i made the mistake of trusting them. Now I have to spend more money to send them back. Hopefully the 12s will be the right size
I agree w everything said w the above reviewer. These shoes totally rock. I've purchased multiple pairs just to insure I have back up for when they wear out. 1 word of advise. If you wear them on colder days make sure you wear your toe warmers because theses things breath n vent so well. A+ Northwave.
Was searching for a quality road shoe for around $100 after using some Shimano all terrains paired with crank bros. candy pedals. The Shimanos were way too narrow for my wider foot box. I'm a size 9 US and went with the 42 on the NW, nearly perfect fit and feel comfortable after longish rides. Rode about 50 mi. on Sat and didn't even think about my feet, other than what a huge difference a proper road pedal(ultegra) with the new shoes makes. I'm happy with the NW will buy them again.
Finally replaced my old Sidis with these. Much better fit for my foot. Did research online re sizing difference and ordered 45s (I wore 46 in Sidi) and the fit was just right. Toebox in the Northwaves is roomier than Sidi. First ride on the indoor trainer lasted 45 minutes with no tingling or numbness in the feet. Soles are super stiff and the energy transfer to the pedals is a noticeable improvement. Overall, I'm extremely impressed.
Well I just received these amazing shoes,I just took my first short 10 mile ride .Amazing shoe .I also researched all popular brands and I kept coming back to this shoe for its features .Now I will say this is my first pair of real road shoes ,I am on a budget. and these fit the bill ..but I can't imagine a better shoe . . I wore them for the first time with light socks and the vents worked great .may need heavier socks in cold .. ..I love the toe box shape in the pics and it was perfect for me .. As Eroc said , also very comfortable tongue..I wear a 13 to 14 with slightly above average width, I picked a 47 and they are perfect, The straps are simple to use.... When I stood up You could not wipe the smile off my face .. I bought the white and red they look great to me I also paired them up with new Shimano 105 pedals
I first ordered a 43 as that is what my Peal Izumi's were and I am a 44 in Sidi, well they were swimming on me, so Adam sent me a pair of 42.5s and they feel like they are made for my foot, super stiff but that comes with the price of weight 342 grams on my scale as the pearl carbons are 280 ea but I believe the fit is worth the weight especially the heel cup really locks your foot in place without having to over tighten, look great perform fantastic and just overall happy and I do have a wide foot, this is not the corner store standard shoe as I wanted better than the specialized or bontrager big box brands
I rode a century last year in the rain wearing these shoes and have not experienced any warping of the soles. I also occasionally train in the rain from time to time and, of course, sweat in them pretty heavily too. The wood sole is actually pretty thick (but not so thick that you notice it in the shoe). The wood does get a little water stained but you never really see it because there is an insole that covers it.
Despite its thickness; the shoe is still very well ventilated - so much so that you can really feel it on fast descents.
These are the best cycling shoes I've ever ridden in. Having rode in many competitors including Sidi, Nalini, Specialized, and Louis Garneau, I will now only ride in my Northwaves. Stiff, powerful, and very comfortable. These shoes are worth every penny full price. On any sort of sale is a steal.
This is a great shoe with lots of nice features. The sizing for these shoes is a bit dodgy. I wear a size 10 in an Asics running shoe which would put me in a size 42.5. I ordered a size 43 and they were small...too short and slightly too narrow. However, Realcyclist was awesome - they provided me a pre-paid shipping label to return them.
I was very impressed by their service. I'm going to try a size 44. I have always found Eurosizing to be erratic and the same sizes between different brands to be not comparable. True in ski boot sizing also.
Yes, I received the size 44, and they fit perfectly. I would recommend these shoes for guys that have a chunky foot like me - slightly wider than normal with a high instep.
I also tried a size 43 in a Pearl Izumi SBS shoe and they didn't fit either - length was OK but too narrow. Their fit chart said a size 10 was equivalent to a 43.
Buying shoes online with the Euro sizing and different lasts is harder than Chinese arithmetic, but I'm glad I figured it out. These are really nice shoes - high quality and a lot of nice features.
I just received this shoes today and I had the opportunity to go for an evening ride under tough weather conditions. Cold and rainy. Very stiff, good looking and very well ventilated. I had to turn around and put my shoe warmers on. These shoes should be very well ventilated in the summer. I can't say much about the workmanship but they seem to be very well made. I also have a pair of top of the line Mavic and SIdi shoes and I would say these are just as good as any other top of the line shoe in the market. Perhaps a step below SIdi Genius 6.6 At $107, these might very well be the best value in the market. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Thank you Realcyclist.
Just received these shoes today. My initial impressions are WOW! They are the White/Silver color and I can't wait to try them out. I current have been using Sidi Genius 5 Megas (47) but have had a brutal problem with "hot foot" and numb toes. I use Specialized insoles which have helped but not completely. I had heard Northwave shoes have a wide to box so when I found these, I decided to try them. I called the number for sizing help and JD recommended size 46. They are the perfect size. The quality of the shoe makes my old Sidi's look like junk. I am encouraged by the many vents in this shoe so hopefully it will eliminate the "hot foot" problem. The insoles are relatively thin so time will tell if they will need to be switched out. I did tons of research prior to buying these. For the price, it's a smokin deal. I opted for free shipping and they got to me in 4 days.
How does the fit of the Aerlite SBS compare with Shimano shoes?
How does the fit of the Aerlite SBS compare with Shimano shoes? I noticed from the size chart that a 41 in Northwave is an 8.5 while the Shimano a 41 is a 7.5. Is the Aerlite really a whole size larger?
I use to wear Specialized SPD shoes, and these Aerlite SBS 5 Layer Carbon are far superior to them. The sizing is a little different, but I was still a 13/US in these (normally a 12/US in tennis shoes) and they allow me about 1/4 inch of space for my toes. I am completely satisfied with these shoes. They are great!
I just upgraded from entry level Specialized with Boa dial to these bike shoes. I enjoyed the snug fit of the Boa system throughout my foot but did not realize how much power I was sacrificing by not having the quality leather shoe with wood insoles and 5 layers of carbon and impressive venting system. This shoe delivers significantly more power to the pedals and it is readily apparent on your first ride. Additionally, the click strap is very well made and provides a snug fit.
With regards to the posts about sizing, the key is to select the SAME size (European) that you currently wear. It will seem as if you are ordering 1/2 size larger than your American size based solely upon the NW sizing chart. Stick with your current European size and do not rely upon the NW sizing chart, unless this is your first pair of biking shoes and then order 1/2 size larger in US.
I'm adding my review for the folks that are on the fence about the size. I struggled with this for a couple of days before I ordered, and unfortunately these shoes don't fit. I hate it, because these are very nice shoes, beautiful carbon sole, and I wish I could keep them. Here's the bottom line for me, they are just too wide. I wear a 46.5 in a Sidi normal width, which are snug but comfortable. I ordered the 46 (US 13) and the length was fine, but my feet were just flopping around they were so wide. I hope this helps others to make their decision.
my 42.5's are 342 grams each, heavier than my other carbon shoes but the power is well worth it as I don't notice the rotational weight, and I am a nut about that stuff,
I've had the shoes a little over a week an so far I really like them! Very stiff feeling, especially if you're like me and coming from a lower quality fiberglass shoe....but that's to be expected. Tons of venting, so you'll need something to cover them in cooler weather.
I also took the advice of some of the other reviews and ordered a size up...ended up having to return for the next size down. I guess not everyone's shoe size and foot shape translate the same. No big deal though...the return/exchange process could not have been easier! Can't wait to put more miles on them!
Have had a pair of these for a year and they have been wonderful. Stiff, light, well fitting. From Tuscan Hills to Dolomite Torture, French Alps, Georgia (six) Gaps and the Florida Flats they have performed well. A great option and unbeatable for the price. I'm very happy with mine and they were $80 more expensive, at this price, get em.
Great shoe, great price. Thanks to some other reviewers I ordered the right size on my first try. Size 44 seems to fit much like my 44 specialized, maybe a bit wider. Tried on a Louis Garneau tri speed last week and I was a 45.
Just got these shoes last week and I have only been able to use them on a trainer to date. I live in northern Wisconsin so I'm not riding roads this time of year. Absolutely awesome shoes. Replaced my Sidis' of 6 years. These felt great out of the box. Sizing was not an issue. Looking forward to warmer weather so I can see what they are really like. Thanks for great service!
First just let me say Thank you Real Cyclist! You guys ROCK! Awesome customer service! Was kind of skeptical ordering shoe online...you know, sizing issues and all. But the price was too good to pass up, so I gave it a shot. I ordered a 44 ( I went with the advise given by most reviewers...that's why we are here right? The 44 was a little too big for me. Contacted RC and returned/reordered a 43.5. WOW! The fit is right there! A bit more room in the toe box area /ball of foot than my Sidi's. The sole is stiff! And the shoe is handsome. The quality looks very nice. I don't think you could find a nicer shoe for $100! Thanks again Real Cyclist!
Awesome shoes and awesome customer service @ Realcyclist!! My wife ordered me these for Christmas and they were stolen from my porch after UPS delivered them three days before Christmas! Called up Realcyclist and explained what happened, they shipped me another pair no questions asked. So far I have put about 400 miles on them and I love em. I normally wear a 46 so I got them in 45.5 and they fit perfect. Crazy amount of ventilation so you need toe covers the minute the temp. starts to drop.
Wow, what a gorgeous pair of shoes. I purchased the all white and when I pulled them out of the box, I was instantly impressed. The carbon soles are beautiful, the side grilles are a killer touch and the shoe just looks fast. On the bike they are a stable, solid platform, like any super high end shoe. After riding with these, I'm confused as to why they aren't 4 times more expensive. The SBS system works perfectly. having the 3rd button to release the strap on notch at a time is a nice touch. The inner soul is thin, but I like that. I have a moderately wide foot in front, and these fit nicely. The mid to rear section of the shoe does get narrow, but after a few miles fit well. The heel cup is high and snug, which I love. ONE HUGE THING: ORDER ONE SIZE LARGER THAN YOUR SHOE SIZE. Save the returns hassle. Wear a 10 shoe? Order an 11.
