High performance jacket that keeps you cozy and warm in the coldest conditions. Just used it at camp and as my back-up jacket for climbing and skiing at higher altitudes in Bolivia, and in some fierce winds, and was well protected. Detachable hood and other great features like lined pockets and collar. I am 5'8 and athletic build- Medium was the perfect size. WARM!

Instant Heat

Wow. This sucker is warm! For the size (it compresses quite small) this thing really packs in the BTU's. There was a cold snap up in the Canadian Rockies while I was on my ice climbing trip. I couldn't manage sitting in a coffee shop with nothing to do but write reviews for another day- so I went for it. At minus 18 C, this thing is KEY apparel for the belays. Even following my fellow torture lover, I wore this jacket happily- and forgot my pain for a few brief moments . . . until I had to get back on the sharp end.

Wore it on Kili in a blizzard

By:
December 16, 2008

I bought this jacket on a whim and thought it would be a great addition to my Kili gear. I am always cold. I am 5'4 and weigh around 120...I am small up top and have some junk in the trunk. I bought a small. All in all, it is a pretty good fit. I was able to layer it with 3 tops underneath including the Montbell exceloft and wore my gore-tex shell over it. It fits a bit snug around the bottom when I have multiple layers on. I love the hood, it's a must. We hiked in a blizzard and the wind was fierce...I was warm but was never able to escape the chill. I am not convinced that it is the warmest thing out there, but like I said, I am always cold.

MJO. I would say it is shiny-er than it is matte. The jackets are made with a 100% Rip-Stop Nylon Shell which kicks off a bit of shine for sure but it is fairly normal for this type of fabric on this type of jacket. Hope this helps!

I wear my SubZero puffy all the time! This is one of my favorite jackets and I love how it cuts out the windchill while snowmobiling, keeps me dry while storm skiing and looks good when going out. This jacket is very puffy and warm, but with the pit zips you can air out and avoid overheating.

Light weight, warm, and water proof in mist, drizzle, and wet snow. You'll want a waterproof taped seam shell in a downpour -- which is pretty much how this jacket is advertised. Interior pocket can hold a 1 liter bottle or 2-liter bladder, though there's no easy way to route a drinking tube. Fleece lining on the inside of the collar and pockets is a luxury touch. Detachable hood and the water proofing are what make this jacket a step up from MSR's standard down parka. Wish it came in more colors. Had to settle for black. Women's small fits a 5'2", 125 lb petite woman perfectly.

Very Warm jacket...Perfect

By:
February 3, 2010

I bought this jacket for a photography trip to Yellowstone in January. This was a great coat. I got a break in the weather so my coldest day was -7 with a pretty fierce wind but this coat just laughed at it. I have no doubt that it will handle minus 20 and further. I loved the interior pockets for keeping camera batteries warm next to my body. The hood comes quite forward and can block your side view but absolutely great for when the wind is really blowing...It really scrunches quite small for packing and can be stuffed into included bag...although that was a bit of a wrestling match. All in all...loved the coat even though it is not the least bit sexy or flashy as you can see from the picture.

I am a plus-size female and very interested in the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka, but the womens sizes only go up to 16, and I normally wear around a 20/24. I prefer my coats to fit large, so I would wear my coats at least a 3x or 4x. I am looking at the mans sizes to see if that would fit me, but I'm afraid the sleeves would be too long. Can you tell me if other women have purchased the mens coat and complained about the sizing? Thank you for your time. I desperately need a heavy-duty winter parka, but have a hard time finding PLUS SIZE for ladies.

I was told by a customer service rep that this was the WARMEST jacket they had. They were right! The quality is excellent and even the collar inside the hood is thick down. It is a beautiful jacket, appropriate for our frozen Wisconsin winters. The only problem was the color made me look like a total corpse and for the cost of the item I had to love it. I like colorful outer wear and already have a boring navy coat. I returned it but only out of my own sense of style. If you want the warmest coat-EVER, they this one is for you!

One extreme: Properly dressed in layers(Including a vapor barrier top, bottom, and skullcap), -40*C isn't unreasonable.

Warm as a Goose!

As a girl who is known for always being cold, I can tell you that this jacket can keep anybody warm. I recently purchased this jacket for myself to keep warm during Canada's long cold winters, and let me tell you; I fell in love. When you think of a down jacket one might worry that it would make you look puffy. Yet I found that all this jacket does is make you look smart. It fits true to size and has nice oversized pockets with zippers. It also has a nice big hood for those extra hold days. This is the perfect jacket for those girls who just can't seem to kick their chill. This little goose will warm you up and block out wind and snow in no time.

jsung. The jacket is completely windproof and highly weather resistant. It is made utilizing Conduit SL fabric which is waterproof. But, due to the construction of the jacket (no tape) we call it highly weather resistant. So, with that in mind... it does shed snow better than rain. Also consider, if it is raining... it may be to warm for a down coat. The jacket is made with a combo of rip-stop nylon and more durable taslan and is no more or less prone to ripping or snagging than any other down coat out there. The velcro does not, in my experience, get caught or stick to the fabric. Hope this info helps!

I'm going to follow-up on this review after having this jacket for almost a year. The hood is what makes this jacket so unbelievably warm. By insulating your head and neck and sealing out the cold, your whole body can stay warm. I also have to comment on the laminate finish on the fabric. While it does shed water, it also sheds....engine paint!! My boyfriend shook a can of florescent orange engine paint that ended up having a hole in the can. The splatter got all over this jacket. I was sick until we started working to remove the paint. With some mineral spirits, all the paint is gone and you'd never know it even happened. I couldn't believe it.

Linda. It is very hard to say which jacket will be 'warmer' as every person has a different metabolism. I would imagine that the down fill in each jacket is similar in amount therefore making the warmth gained from the insulation similar. The TNF jacket weighs 545g and the Sub Zero SL weighs 745g so it could be said that the Sub Zero has more down insulation but I don't know that for sure. The difference in weight more than likely comes from the fact that the Sub Zero SL is made utilizing the Conduit Laminate from Hardwear which is our waterproof and breathable laminate. The Sub Zero SL is not a waterproof jacket due to construction (not taped) but it will provide superior weather protection to snow and light rain when compared to the TNF jacket. Also, the Sub Zero SL is baffled like a sleeping bag (no cold spots)... not sure about the TNF jacket. Hope this info helps!

Super warm but heavy in the pack

By:
December 30, 2009

I love this jacket. It's crazy warm and a small gives me room for a few layers underneath (even a down sweater) which makes it even warmer. I wore it this am when it was 19F with only a thin sweater underneath and I was just fine.

However, it's HEAVY. If you're a weight weenie, keep looking. I bought this to take on summit bids, but when you're counting every gram that goes in your pack, this jacket can bog you down. But when I'm not worried about weight, this is my go-to jacket. Otherwise I use a lighter down jacket paired with a down sweater under a shell -- these two weigh less and take up less room than my SL. Also, I'm always a little concerned by items marked "water resistant" so I prefer to have a gore-tex shell as my top layer for climbs (this is too puffy for that).

YMMV. I do love it though.

Tall and skinny... well, in order to fit your arms you may have to go with a jacket that is a little larger in the body. So, I would say @ 5'11" you would probably be the most comfortable in a large! A medium might work as well but I think you would run into the sleeve length issue. Good luck!

So very warm!!!

By:
December 18, 2009

This is the warmest jacket I've ever owned for sure!! I've had it now for about a year and it looks just as new as the day I bought it. It's kept me warm in around-zero degree temp's with snow a-falling. (usually I have to just wear a thin tee-shirt underneath so I don't sweat!) The pockets are great as well- fleece lined, soft, and toasty! Cinch-cords at the bottom and with the hood are great as well (and the hood's removable so that's nice too.) I'll admit I do feel like the michelan man while wearing it- it's very puffy!!- I'm 5'10", 130lb and it's a tad big, I prob should've gotten the small- but it's still awesome!!!

I'm 5'6" 135 and was wondering which size would be best. I plan on using the jacket as a piece of gear rather than just as a town jacket. It seems like the small fits well, I found the sleeves and torso to be longer than any other down jackets I've owned or tried, but the neck is a little small. Has anyone close to my size tried the small or med??

5'7 and 135 - medium is perfect. Any smaller and it would creep up your back and let in the cold. Neck fit just fine and bottom hem cinches on both sides. Too tight and the jacket won't be as warm.

Stick with the small, unless the neck tightness is cutting into your skin and restricting movement and/or blood flow.....you kinda want a nice comfortably-tight seal around your neck to keep that cozy warmness inside the jacket!

Great Parka

By:
February 15, 2007

This parka is awesome. It has great features (inside water bottle pocket, fleece-lined hand pockets), and is really warm. It kept me dry and warm in really cold weather climbing, and kept out the wind. The Subzero is a relatively inexpensive (compared to other brands) down parka. Buy it -- you won't be disappointed.

it depends on what you are wearing underneath it and how hard you are exerting yourself, but this jacket has been on top of some of the tallest, coldest peaks in the world. Layer properly and put the hood up, and you should be able to handle -30 F for a short while. Should take care of all but the coldest of winter days in the lower 48.

Can't Wait!

By:
December 9, 2008

I loved this jacket from the moment I opened up the box. It's going to be great for those long storm days sitting on the lift when everyone else has called it quits. I ended up with the medium. I ordered both. The small fit me (I'm 5'6 size 5, but very busty on top), but the medium is what I picked for any layering I might do. I don't mind the extra room. Can't wait to try it out. Now we just need some SNOW!!

The SL laminate in this jacket is great in that it protects the down from melting snow and light precipitation, and helps windproof the fabric. It is a little heavier because of it, but it makes it that much better as an outer layer. Hope that helps!

There is only a SubZero SL Hooded Jacket. There is also a SubZero Jacket but it is not hooded. This makes the jacket extremely weather resistant and aids in warmth as a result. Hope this helps!

Flag

This jacket is cut to fit over all your other layers. You can size it down probably one size safely, if you are really after a trimmer fit, but this is a down jacket after all and it is still going to be pretty puffy. The original idea behind jackets like this is that you throw them on over your mountaineering outerwear when you slow down or stop moving to make camp, so they are made to fit over everything else you would be wearing. The only thing you positively wouldn't want is for it to fit too tightly. You would be squeezing the air out of the down at that point and the jacket won't keep you as warm. Hope that helps.

By:

Not really. If you like the way it fits, then it fits. If it's way too sloppy or too long or the sleeves are too long, then it's too big. If you like it baggy it should be baggy. It's totally subjective, depending on how you want it to fit.

I get *really* cold really easily. This jacket worked wonders. I thought it was too warm for skiing (though with fewer underlayers, it actually worked out ok). When just hanging out, the jacket keeps you at a perfect temp. XS fit well (I am 5'0", 100lbs) and it is not nearly as bulky as other brands. Downsides: hard to start the zipper; and the hook and loop closure at the top closure bothers my chin (though cutting it down with scissors seemed to help).

TOAST IS UP!

By:
January 16, 2008

I got the Tiger color jacket. Great color. It looks just like the color on a striped tiger. I got a size Large .( I am 5ft 5 in. tall and around 160 lbs ). The major gripe is what a few others have mentioned, and that is the coat needs to be a tad bit longer .It just barely covers the rearend.
The warmth factor is wonderfull. I have worn it in 20 degree windy winter days since I have gotten the coat. . If you have short sleeves on under the coat , the sleeves of the coat get alittle cold inside against your skin but the rest of the coat is toasty. when I wear one layer underneath including long sleeves , the coat is perfect.
The hood of the jacket is oh so warm also.
The wrist / hand elastic openings could have been alittle bit wider to give more room for the wrist part of the gloves to fit in but oh well. The zipper is easy to start and runs very smooth. all in all the coat is a smash!!
do not know how it will do when washed but special instructions came with it. I read another site about the washing and it said to use powder soap and a front loading washer. No agitator.

Check the yellow pages under Camping, Backpacking, or Mountaineering Equipment for folks who specialize in cleaning outdoor products. Your local retailer may also be able to refer you. Be sure to ask if they specifically wash down clothing.Machine Wash: Zip up all the zippers, attach all Velcro® and turn your garment inside out. Wash in a front-loading machine only, using cold water on a gentle setting. Use a minimum amount of a mild powder soap or special down soap (available at outdoor stores). Use at least two rinse cycles to get all the soap out of the garment.DryingWhen moving your garment from the washer to the dryer, do so carefully by carrying it from the bottom. Tumble dry in a large commercial dryer on low heat. The dryer must be large enough for the garment to flop freely around. Drying could take several hours and your garment should be checked often to make sure it is not overheated. As it dries, look for clumps of wet down and gently shake to redistribute the down.No-nos * Do not use a top-loading washing machine (the agitator will destroy the channels). * Do not use liquid soap or detergent. Do not use strong soap or detergent. * Do not use your home dryer (they have been known to melt holes in the fabric). * Do not lift your garment from one end when wet (lift the entire thing all at once from underneath). * Do not dry in the sun (the UV will damage the nylon).Hope this helps!

The MHardwear Hooded Compressor Jacket will allow for more mobility because it is a lot less puffy/bulky, but it isn't quite as warm, ultimately. It is always a trade-off, because more trapped air s warmer but also bulkier. The Compressor jacket is excellent, and definitely worth checking out if you are shopping for jackets of this type. That said, the Sub-zero SL here is a classic, and it has quite a few 6000+ meter peaks under its belt, so it is definitely possible to get things done with it on!

Like everybody else, I love this jacket. Very weatherproof, a light rain runs right off it. Fantastic hood. Unlike most women's coats, it actually fits real women; long enough in the arms to actually move them, big enough to wear layers under it (yes it does run a little big), long enough to keep your butt warm, enough room in the arms and shoulders. And it really fits like a women's coat, not a man's. Also unlike most women's coats, it is actually warm! Very warm! No sewn thru seams or cold spots. Yes it's not the lightest thing out there, but it's pretty light and for the price it's pretty high performance. Wait for a sale and you will have a great value in an all purpose winter garment.

I'd say small, but check the sizing chart. It's under the size/color pulldown menu.

Very Warm but too problematic

By:
October 23, 2009

I loved this jacket (so warm) until it ripped after 3 months. I don't know how or why because I basically walk to and from work in it and that's it. I called Mountain Hardwear about it and they said they'd fix it for $90 plus S&H. I was appalled by this but then the guy on the phone was a total jerk. I called to complain about the jerk and the assistant manager and the manager basically called me a liar! Nobody from customer service was helpful in any way. I will never buy Mountain Hardwear again. My boyfriend has a similar Patagonia jacket and he loves it (and if there's a problem they fix it or replace it free)! Stay away from Mountain Hardwear unless you are willing to be belittled by the "customer service".

I'm 5'6 & 123lbs size 2-4 but very busty on top. Should I go with a samll or medium. I hate things pulling tight across my chest.

You will probably be happiest with a medium. It may be a little long but will fit you better in the chest.

Fits Large

By:
March 11, 2008

Great coat; VERY warm; well-constructed. I bought it to work in the Arctic, but it does fit on the large side. I'm a medium-build and usually wear a small or a medium (women's). I called before ordering and was advised that this fits on the large side, but the small was still too big. I think that the sleeves would be too short on the XS.

Deliciously warm, easy to ski with, on the coldest mountain in Quebec-Tremblant. The color, Tiger, attracted everyone's attention. I now have three Sub Zer0 SL Hooded Jackets!!

I'm 5.10 with long arms- I got a medium and the sleeves are long enough. You however are a bit taller than me- the W's L (33 inches)might fit you- otherwize, the men's M is one inch longer in the arms at 34 inches.

This is the one SHE wants.

By:
December 12, 2008

Attention all men: This is the one that'll keep her warm enough to kick your butt on your yearly xmas trip to the backcountry.

She says: great fit, not too bulky, the hood actually keeps her ears nice and warm, her starbursts don't freeze in her pockets. It's windproof (haven't tested the waterproof yet, but will update when we get back from RMNP in Jan) packs small and she even wears it to work.

This is the one she wants for xmas.

Sub Zero SL

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
March 17, 2008

I love this jacket, but can't find one that fits just right. It's super warm, very lofty, and comfortable. I typically wear a size 10 on top, and the small was pretty roomy considering. I tried the XS and it fit well in the body, but was too short in the sleeves and a bit short in the torso. All in all, this jacket is tough and ideal for low temps, but not very flattering if that's your main concern.

Paradise away from paradise

By:
January 16, 2007

I live in Hawaii and have family on the mainland. Every year around the winter holidays I leave 80 degrees of paradise for about 3 weeks. That 3 weeks has always been a time of freezing my buns off. But freeze no more with the sub zero SL hooded jacket. It truly became my paradise away from paradise, a little warm retreat in the snow covered mountains and also running errands in town. I LOVE this jacket and recommend it to anyone needing a packable summit jacket or just a dependable winter jacket. I'll never leave the islands again without it!

Really?

By:
January 5, 2009

I am bummed! I read all these awesome reviews about the fit and everything and I got mine and it is 1. too big (I'm 5'5' and 135lbs and got a Med.) and 2. it is not flattering at all! It is huge, puffy, shiny black (I thought it would be matte) and makes me look huge. Bummmed out in Minnesota. Maybe a small would look better, but I'm not entirely convinced.... :-(

Hi Lucc,
I wear two of them size L, slim, but long look, as mountaner I have only good comments and for winter tours they are super, for short rest on tour is very worm jacket.
Somehow to chose exact size U have to take maeasurments of your body, chest , hipp, lenth of arms, etc..., So U can not be wrong, I take my size on Taylor Shop and it was perfect fitt on my body, but I am 1.85, 76kg. I do not know short and big mountaneer.
Hope that can be chainge for another if U are in USA easy.
Much Luck
