The Mountain Hardwear Men’s Nitrous Down Jacket provides the lightweight insulation of 800-fill down in a low-bulk package suited for nearly any day in the hills. You can wear the Nitrous Down Jacket over your shell to stay warm on a rest break, or use it as a mid layer in seriously cold conditions. Plus, this Mountain Hardwear jacket makes a really nice change from your hoody when you head downtown in the snow.
This piece competes with the now super popular Down Sweater by Patagonia, however its cut for certain folks. I'm no fatass by any means (34 waist), and the Large was too tight around the hips. Its cut for you skinny folks, more so than the Patagonia. Its cut longer though, which was something I wanted in the Down Sweater, and has thinner baffles to prevent shifting of down. Pros:
-GREAT arm length - UBER light, its lighter than the Patagonia - Comes w/ stuff sack - Packs down smaller than the Patagonia
Cons:
- too tight around hips (32 waist and smaller) - NO INTERNAL POCKET, but has a handy chest pocket - Elastic cuffs (I hate elastic cuffs, cause no matter what they stretch out)
Overall, a great alternative, if you are a skinny, lanky mofo, this is your choice for a premium cold weather midlayer
Duct Tape is the classic mountaineer's fix for little holes. You can also pick up Nylon gear tape, or Gore-Tex patch kits. They will all do the job nicely.
Warm. Stylish. WARM. I fits a bit snug around the hips and under the arms but I'll take it if it means it keeps more of the cold out! The only thing this puppy lacks is zipper hand pockets. Great product.
Excellent jacket, great features, compressible and warm. The material can be a little prone to snagging, then again a material that light weight will inherently have a trade off. The chest pocket is awesome. It sits high enough that it is not pressing the contents directly against the chest, and is easy to access from under a hard shell without fully unzipping the content. The included stuff sack is a nice touch. This should be an essential gear piece in every outdoor enthusiasts closet.

recomendations for washing this jacket? its got a slightly greasy aroma to it from being worn a lot and slept in a couple times, the type of smell gear gets when skied in a bunch. want to get rid of the smell but I cant just toss in the dryer on fluff with a dryer sheet so I guess I have to wash it. i'm afraid as I dont want to ruin it, i like it too much thanks for help.
A garment like this can be washed in warm water by hand or in a FRONT LOAD washer. Nikwax makes a down wash which is available here. I'd recommend washing it separately. Be super careful with the wet jacket, cradle it when you move it.
http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-down-wash
You can line dry or, preferably, use a dryer on low. Put a few clean tennis balls in the dryer with the jacket to help restore the loft
A great jacket. Works great as a mid-layer. I have really long arms, and the XL is a perfect fit. Super warm, and very packable, and it comes with its own stuff sack!
Xia4179080 Yes Medium would be perfect. I am 5'8 152 and medium is perfect. Small you will be miserable and will be unable to add any base layers if you wanted.
This is an average down jacket. It's an almost exact comparison to the Patagonia Down Sweater, the Marmot Zeus, and the North Face Diez. It's a light down sweater with 800-fill and a lightweight ripstop outer. It's fairly wind-resistant, though I didn't think it was down proof. The Diez seems like a better jacket for the same price, but the patagonia is the best of all four as it is windproof with the same warmth as the others. The Zeus is by far the best deal, and it's marmot quality, so you'd be set. Three stars because it's an average down jacket at a very premium price.
Another close comparison is the Western Mountaineering Flash Jacket The WM is a little lighter (9 oz vs 12 oz), but I have been consistently impressed with WM down over practically everybody else. The WM is higher priced ($260 vs $220), but it also has a hood. As a side benefit the WM is manufactured in the US (San Jose, CA). I agree that the Zeus is a great bargain, and although very good the MH & Patagonia are better. My wife has the MH & I have the WM. The WM has better construction, but in all honesty, I don't see someone really being disappointed with the performance of any of those listed by James or myself.
The picture on your site is slightly different than the picture
The picture on your site is slightly different than the picture on Mountain Hard Wear's site. The embroidery in particular. Will the item that ships from you look like the picture you have on your site or the one on Mountain Hard Wear's site?
Chris. Very observant! So, the difference between the two is that the one on this site has the embroidery of the first generation Nitrous (old picture) and the one on the Mountain Hardwear site is correct. So, if you ordered one, it should be with the embroidery like on the Hardwear site. I hope this helps!
Real nice jacket. Nice long athletic fit. No bulk, but intermediate to heavy warmth. I'm 6'3" and the large fits great in torso and arms. Only one zipper pocket on the chest. Slight draw-back.
I am 5'9" and 180 pounds. Working out at the gym three times a week, I have been called muscular but I try not to bulk up. I loved this jacket pulling it out of the box. Beautiful and well made, it is also extremely light and compact. Unfortunately, it was a poor fit for me. It was extremely tight around the arms and chest, and the sleeves extended all the way to my finger tips. I had to return the jacket. If I were 6'2" and 180 pounds, I believe this would be the ideal jacket to buy. I give it four stars for this reason.
I just received the Patagonia Down Sweater today. Thankfully, it fits much better, although I wish it were more tapered at the waist. One thing I noticed right away is that the Patagonia shell appears to be made with thicker material versus the Nitrous. I wonder if that is going to make it more durable? Stay tuned.
I don't own this specific jacket, but I am 5'9" and 170 pounds and I wear a medium in the Mountain Hardwear compressor jacket. I'd think that small would be the right size for you.
I was looking for a warm insulation layer and narrowed it down to this and the Patagonia Down Sweater. The baffles on the Patagonia seem larger and it seems slightly warmer. But the reasons why I ended up getting the Nitrous were:
1. Fit. I'm 5'11", 145 lbs and this jacket fits much better than the Down sweater. I bought a small and for the same fit on the Patagonia I would need a XS but then the sleeves become too short. The cut is also longer on the Nitrous. However, don't expect to be able to wear more than a baselayer underneath. It'll become too tight. Or buy a size up.
2. More streamlined for layering. I bought this with the intention of wearing it under a shell. The Nitrous isn't as puffy as the Down Sweater and it fits alot nicer underneath my MH Hairpin jacket. With the Down Sweater you can feel it bunch up at the armpits.
3. Features. I ended up getting the Nitrous with the hood, which unfortunately can't be found on BC. It has a convenient chest pocket that the Down sweater does not have. Also compared to the non-hooded nitrous, there are zippers on the handwarmer pockets plus an internal pocket.
Maybe a silly question, but is this jacket downproof? I just
Maybe a silly question, but is this jacket downproof? I just returned First Ascent's Downlight jacket because I had feathers leaking from the darn thing!
I have the subzero down from MH and it does not let any down out. It is also much larger and higher down content so I guess that is a good sign for MH down in general. Just my 2 cents.
These things are supposed to be downproof, but inevitably some of the down will end up coming out. I don't have this jacket, but I have the Patagonia down sweater which is very similar. I've seen 2 feathers come out in 2 years of use so I have no complaints whatsoever. This is very similar in terms of weight/warmth to the Patagonia down sweater and the Zeus jacket the other person mentioned should be a little bit warmer. Honestly, this is where the backcountry.com return policy excels - if you find it leaking down in an unacceptable fashion, they will take it back at anytime, no questions asked. Good luck!
Haha..unfortunately there really isn't anything that is 100% down proof but, you might want to try looking into Marmot Ive had really good luck with their down jackets for a few years now. If you want something similar to this look into the Ama Dablam or the Zeus. I have both in the Womens version and haven't had any feathery incidents yet. Here are the links for those. Happy shopping :)
Simply put, the best fitting down/jk I have tried on. 6'3" 190 (L), this brand has the best fit for tall lean guys.Athletic fit. tried on several brands, this jacket was lighter and warmer than most I tried on for a thin 800 fill.
800 fill down is quality and warm, this jacket works great as a stand alone in moderate temperatures (15-30ish degrees), works even better as a mid layer under a shell. The hand pockets do not zip, and can get caught on things if you're not careful. Material is a little thin, and should be used under a shell for anything but hanging out around camp. The fit definitely athletic, and look to the Patagonia down sweater for a roomier fit. Definitely a good investment. Packs down super small too
I'm 6'2", and about 170 - 175 lbs. Long and skinny.
I'm 6'2", and about 170 - 175 lbs. Long and skinny. With a 6'4" wingspan. Think a large might work, or will I need to go with an xl. I often need the length of an XL, but the body of a large. XL's end up being a bit boxy.
Also. Does this have drawcord at the waist? I imagine it does, but it doesn't say so. Thanks.
This is probably too late for BrayD, but I'd go with the large. I'm nearly the same size and shape (6'3", 190#, long arms), and have massive trouble with sleeve and torso length. As it turns out, Large fits me really well. In fact, the sleeves are very long, I have great torso coverage, and if anything, the chest and shoulders are a bit loose. I won't have any trouble fitting some layers underneath.
BrayD. I would go with an XL in this case. It is a more fitted piece and so even though you will have a little more room in the chest you'll appreciate the length considering your wingspan. And yes... it has a drawcord at the waist. Hope this helps!
this thing is made well and with obviously the highest loft down you'll really see in a down jacket. only complaint is the no internal pocket. but all in all its a super comfortable, super compressible, super warm jacket at a good price.
I'm only giving this jacket a 4 star rating because the sizing is a little strange. I am 5'7" 185lbs and the large is quite snug on me. I kept it because the XL is too loose. Mountain Hardware jackets are a little hit and miss in terms of the sizing. I recently bought the Typhoon rain jacket and returned the Large for a Medium because the large was too big. I have mountain hardware shirts that are M and L and pants that are also M and large. Moral of the story is read the reviews before you buy. They are typically right on the money and will help you get the right size.
Anyone out there have the Tiger color? How do you like it? Can
Anyone out there have the Tiger color? How do you like it? Can you post a pic? Oh i usually wear a size M. Should i stay with that or go to a large on this one?
I got the Tiger, and it is super bright give-you-a-sun-burn orange. A little tough for me to handle, but it is still nice. I really wish that it was the same pale gold color shown in the picture online. It seems like they have a bit of a color shift on these colors, because someone else on here was commenting that the sapphire (the color I really wanted until I read their review) was a straight up purple.
Iam 6'0 210 ordered xl very tight under arms. The foreign company that is making this jacket need better ways to measure for a xl fit. I have a xl mountain hardwear jacket from 2 years ago and it fits great. Nice slim fit if only under the arms would have a little more room
I will be moving from the tropics to Washington DC metropolitan
I will be moving from the tropics to Washington DC metropolitan area (NoVA). Was wondering if this Jacket would be good enough for the "worst days"? I don't have much experience with the winter, the coldest I've seen was 27 F in NYC. I'm a bit worried that using a coat of wool or wool blend with layers wont be effective for windy days/really cold days. At the same time, "how warm" is this coat?
Honestly, you are going to want something warmer for DC, unless you used this under your wool coat. Then it should keep you warm. Stoic wool layers work wonders in the cold.
I really like the Nitrous... but be *warned*... its cut fits very "snug" under the arms... more so than any other Hardwear jacket I've owned. I'm 6'3", 215 and have longer than average arms. I bought the XL. The arm length is generous... and all other aspects of the jacket are great. Before you rip off the tags... definitely wear this jacket for 20 minutes when you get it to assure the underarm fit is OK.
I normally wear a small in most MHW clothing. But I wear a medium
I normally wear a small in most MHW clothing. But I wear a medium in the Monkey Man jacket. Is this cut anything like the Monkey Man? I'm about 5'8'' and 140 lbs.
This lightweight layer fits a little more snug than most down coats as it is meant to be worn either as a mid-layer or an outerlayer. If you are deciding between two sizes... depending on how you want to wear it will help to decide the size. Hope this helps!
Down jackets are made to be big. They are built to be worn over many layers. A small should be appropriate, but check the size chart to make sure the sleeves won't be too short.
The Nitrous down Jacket is comparative to the Patagonia down Sweater, the Marmot Zeus, and the North Face Diez. But it looks better and has a very nice athletic fit. It's a light down sweater with 800-fill and is surprisingly warm. Its great for layering on snowy, wet cold days and a good stand alone on warmer dry days. If you want durable, toasty and bulk, get the Sub Z. If you want water & wind resistant get a shell. Im 510 165 with athletic build and could have worn the medium for snug fit but got the large so I could get several layers under it.
I tried on a MHW Subzero jacket the other day and it made me
I tried on a MHW Subzero jacket the other day and it made me look like a puff ball. Will the nitrous be thinner? What other down jacket is there to choose from that won't make me look like a puff ball?
The Mountain Hardwear Nitrous is much thinner than the Sub Zero and the down baffles are much smaller completely eradicating the puff ball effect. Hope this helps!
Check out The North Face Thunder Down Jacket. It is an alpine fit, and has smaller down chambers so you dont look like the sta-puff marshmallow man. I am 6'2" and just picked up the large and it fits quite nicely! With the 800 fill it takes less down to accomplish the same task, keep you warm! I actually was able to wear my TNF Khumbu fleece over the top of it.
This jacket is truly an example in stylish versatility. In selecting this item, I did a thorough comparison of the competition (Patagonia, The North Face & Marmot) and this was far and away the best option. It's great for layering and as a standalone piece in not-too-chilly climates (>30 degrees).
Though it's not the garment's fault per se, the sleeves are slightly too short for my longer than average arms. For my slim nature, 5'10", 34" sleeves, 30" waist, 140 lbs, it fits very well and looks good in the process.
Material-wise, it's top notch, with a robust down filling and a hearty outer fabric. Though not exactly waterproof or downproof, it does provide great wind protection and warmth as you need it.
All in all, I need to shave my arms down by 1" and then this jacket would a five star, knock your socks off, piece of outerwear. Enjoy!
No. Not nearly as warm. It's a higher fill power, but much less down overall, making it more of a superlight, mid-range option than a heavy insulator. The only MH down jacket warmer than a Sub Zero is an Absolute Zero.
I have really enjoyed this jacket. It is extremely lightweight yet very warm. Overall i am very satisfied with this product as I am with 99% of my other MH products. A couple things to consider. I'm 5'7" with a muscular build. I had to go with the large as the medium was just too tight. The sleeves could have been better engineered in my opinion. There are down jackets out there that have some kind of elastic or fitted material to keep the sleeves from hanging down past your hands. This jacket doesn't have that. In addition, while it isn't a big deal, MH should have considered adding zippers to ALL the pockets rather than just the top one. The flap is fine, but I would prefer to have a zipper to keep my stuff secure.
This is a great layering jacket - purchased for my son. He attends school in a cold mountain area. My get one for me - Sizing runs small - Both of us usually wear size large jackets - have to go to XL in this one.
The nitrous jacket is 800 fill down insulation layer that is great for mountaineering. The jacket keeps you warm and is amazingly light weight and compressible. The jacket folds into the small bag that comes with the purchase. I bought the small and it fits great. Highly recommended.
I bought this jacket with the PCT Kick-Off in mind and it was excillent! Sitting low to the ground, in a large bowl by a lake, at night, with the wind blowing, for two to three hours, watching movies, I was not moving around to keep myself warm at all. I did have on a layer of fleese underneath that I really did not need. I kept warm. The fold-up caller allowed me to sink down into it and protect my lips from chapping too. I hands also stayed warm in the pockets. The jacket packs up small and light in its own stuff sack so it won't take up any room in my pack. This deffenitly is going on the trail with me.
I got this jacket (more like a sweater weight) for my boyfriend to wear under his ski jacket. He's 6'3" and weighs about 185 lbs. The large fit him perfectly, even the sleeves were long enough! It's the perfect weight to go under a shell and great as his "hanging out" layer apres ski. We liked it so much that I got the women's version for myself.
This jacket is really light and packs down to nothing. It has an awesome fit if you are a thin person. Many down jackets look boxy and are too puffy for my liking. This one has and athletic fit and would fit under a shell perfectly. I originally ordered the Small and it was to small for me, so the Medium would fit much better. I just need to reorder it sometime. The Sapphire color looks nothing like the picture displayed here. I thought it was going to be more of a blue color, but it is strait purple.
Did you order the hooded one or the regular one? Because on photos on the web the hooded one appears purple and the normal one appears blue. I would like to know whether this one is purple or blue.
After much research between the Patagonia Down Sweater and Nitrous Jacket- I went with the Nitrous Jacket. I liked the slimmer cut versus that of the boxy cut of the Patagonia down sweater. Exceptional jacket, Sapphire (awesome color) but the large was too tight around the back of shoulder and under the arms. Tried XL and was too large. I am 5'10'' @ 188lbs -wear a size 42 regular jacket. I normally take a large in MH but unfortunately this cut in this style did not work. So I returned it for a sub zero in large. It would be great if Mountain Hardwear would re-work the cut on this model.
This is one of my best buys of the season! Extremely lightweight, but soooo soo warm. Wore it on a day in New York about 30 degrees with just a t-shirt underneath and didn't feel a thing. It even comes with it's own bag so you can stuff it down and pack it without worry of weight. Two things that bug me a little:
1) the hand pockets don't have zippers. Not a problem if you only use the pockets to warm your hands, but kind of annoying if you want to use it for keys or a wallet or something valuable 2) The elastic cuff on the wrist is not smooth at all, and is a little irritating
So if you want a warm down sweater that is both a slimmer and longer cut than the patagonia down sweater, look no further
Have to revise my review a little bit. After only about 2 or 3 days of use, feathers started flying out. Now of course some feathers might come out of a down jacket, but my friend has the Patagonia down sweater and has had no problems what so ever. Also, it just generally isn't that warm. The down just does not feel as substantial and I hardly notice a difference from when I wear this and when I don't. Overall, very disappointing and will probably get a different layering piece.
I haven't used this jacket yet, so this review may be a bit premature, but it feels like a well made jacket that fits great and should be pretty warm.
To start out: Appearance. I got the Tiger, and my god is it orange. The pictures online make it seem like a nice pale gold, but its more Atomic Orange than anything. I'm somewhat of a subtle kind of guy, so I'm having trouble with the color, and it might end up going back. The fit is fantastic. I'm 6'3", 190#, long arms, and this jacket fits really really well (its actually a little too large, but I think I'll cope). For more detail, check out my answer to BrayD's question on fit.
Next up: Performance. Like i said, I haven't tested it out, but it does feel like a nice warm down sweater. No blizzards or frigid nights, but I wouldn't hesitate on a sunny day with snow filling the streets of Boston. Don't expect TOO much, as this is an ultralight sweater like thing, but layering with a fleece will take this a long long way. It comes with a stuff sack, but it can be compressed way further than that. You can also (somewhat awkwardly) invert it into its own breast pocket, but the zipper doesn't close easily as it wasn't designed for such. My size large weighed in at 11.6 oz, and stuffed into the pocket it is about 7"x7"x4". It feels extremely well made and I'm certain it'll last a long time.
I own several mountain hardware pieces of clothing, and they always fit great, work well, do what I need and take what I give. Aside from the color, I really like the jacket.
So after sitting in my room for about a week, I decided the Nuclear Waste Orange jacket had to go. That was nearly a year ago, and I have regretted it ever since (not really regret, because I just couldn't handle it). But, it has been a year and fall/winter approacheth, so I started looking again. The jacket was on sale at a pretty good price, and there was only one large left in black, so I snabbed it...and I'm so excited!
I was also considering the new model, which they supposedly fixed some of the fitment issues, but I was afraid it was going to be too wide in the torso, which is why I love this jacket so much. This jacket is for thin people, but if you have a thin/athletic build, it will fit well (I don't have any weird underarm issues, but i guess that is just a personal thing).
