The Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0-Degree Synthetic Sleeping Bag keeps you cozy during cold, wet winter camping trips. This roomy mummy bag with a shaped footbox won’t give you nightmares of being restrained in a straight jacket, and the Thermic Micro fill provides lightweight, packable insulation that won’t lose its loft after the first wash cycle.
An EN lower-limit rating of 10° F means that this bag is best used for shoulder-season camping in the mountains and for occasional use during cold winter conditions
Thermic Micro synthetic fill traps in warmth, keeps you warm even if it gets slightly wet, and compresses well for easy packing
Lamina construction means that the junction of baffles are welded, not sewn, for maximum loft and heat retention
Durable, lightweight nylon shell features a DWR treatment to repel frost, condensation, and dew
Soft polyester lining wicks away moisture
Face gasket and hood block drafts at the hood opening and seal in body heat
Full-length, two-way #8 zippers extend all the way to the footbox to allow maximum ventilation or the option to use the bag as a comforter or zip it together with another bag
Comfort footbox follows your foot's natural contours to reduce constriction
Comfort mummy cut efficiently maximizes warmth without being overly constrictive
Internal zippered pocket near shoulder provides storage for your keys, watch, or phone
Included compression stuff sack and mesh storage bag make storage and transport a cinch
The rating on this bag is fairly accurate, though I'd suggest wearing a layer or two if you're going to push it close to its rating. I've kept mine stored in its large storage sack, and still find it very warm. There is a review below mentioning that they've had some issues with storing it in its large storage sack has caused it to lose its warmth. So be aware of that. Granted, hanging a bag or laying it flat is a great way to store it, but not all of us have that kind of space available.
The shell/lining of this bag is luxurious and quite comfortable. Also, given the fact that this bag is synthetic, it packs down to a decent size and its weight is reasonable.
The Lamina 0 is a great snow camping bag, particularly if conditions are going to be a bit mixed, and consist of some wet snow or even some rain. Also, if you're car camping the larger size and weigh isn't going to be an issue.
If you're backpacking and out in these conditions I'd suggest throwing some more cash at a down bag with a GoreTex shell with a more realistic rating. However, given the price, as long as you factor in the size, weight, and slightly liberal rating of this bag, its a decent choice.
I'm 5'10" and the short bag (6')seems to be a tad too short... fine if you want to feel like a caterpiller ready to escape to butterfly away, but I exchanged for the "regular" (6'6") bag...backcountry.com's customer service is unparalleled!

I have use a lot of sleeping bags in the past and this is the only one that can keep me warm! When I don't move I don't produce body heat and this bag heats up quick and stays comfortable! I'm able to use this 1 bag all year long and it packs down really small for a 0 degree bag! I love it!
I bought the Lamina 0 degree bag a couple of years ago and it has gone from being a 0 degree bag when I bought it to maybe 40 degree comfort rating now. Works well when new but loses its loft and i.e. insulation very, very quickly, even when stored properly ion the storage sack. It does perform well in wet weather though, but overall don't get this bag, it will let you down abd I'm not the type to review things on the internet ever...
It says to store it flat or hanging, not in the 'stuff sack'. Most sleeping bags can safely be stored in their large storage bags. I have several and store them in their large sacks, and have no issues. I wonder if Kevin washed them regularly, and what other care was provided. I can't imagine storing a bag in a large storage sack would ruin in, and if so, its poorly designed. I have a Lamina 0 and its still very, very warm despite its being stored in its larger storage bag.
I'm 5'1" and I really like the short length. It's warm and lofty and packs down well. My only complaint is that the zipper gets caught all the time, which is really frustrating. Overall great bag.
great bag, very warm. compacts nicely into compression sack to fit sleeping bag compartment of my kelty trekker. worth the money if you enjoy cold weather camping.
its a real warm bag i did some backpacking in February and it held up fine. the only thing is the drawstring broke around the chin, but no big deal just fed it through and sewed it up. good bag for its price
I'm 6'1" tall, 240lbs. The long fit's okay. It's a little long, but I have enough room to fit some clothes at the bottom of the bag. I've slept in a snow trench without a bivy in the high teens with base layers, socks, and light jacket. Kept me nice and warm. The cut is nice and wide for all you with a wide frame, or for those who want a little room to move around. All in all, a great sleeping bag.
I'll admit that I have an older model than the one pictured here. I bought mine about 2 years ago. So keep that in mind with this review.
I really want to love this bag. Well, I really do love this bag... that is to say while I'm sitting around the house on chilly nights. It's comfy enough but...
This thing loses it's loft rather quickly even when stored correctly. I took it up Rainier in July when temps never got down below 22F. I wore my softshell pants, baselayer top and fleece while I slept. I was comfortable but not super toasty.
A couple weeks ago, I took it out for some winter camping and the low got down to 13F and I froze my rear off. Couldn't sleep at all and spent the night shivering and tossing/turning even with 2 thick pairs of socks, baselayer top/bottom, softshell pants, and fleece top.
The drawstring at the top works well enough and cinches down. The zipper gets caught quite often though. I do love the little pocket at the top. Comes in handy so you don't lose earplugs. I'm almost 6'1" and I have a long which is roomy enough to put boot liners in the bottom to dry out during the night. It collapses down decently enough for a synthetic bag and isn't too heavy for the price.
Overall, I wouldn't buy this again. I'll be upgrading to a 800 down bag next anyway. Maybe I sleep cold but this one makes me want to get a -20F just in case.
Try wearing less layers. I know it sounds weird, but the principal here is that you are kept warm during the night by the small layer of air trapped between you and your bag. Your body heat is the primary mechanism that warms that air. Your bags main function is trap your body heat? The insulation of the bag itself also plays a role in this process but your body is what generates heat. Simply put, if you wear too many cloths this layer of air is compromised and your bag never warms up and you are left to rely solely on the synthetic insulation of your jacket to keep you warm
This bag is bad ass! It's light (for the price, and temp rating) it's comfy and it squishes down pretty good for a winter bag. Definitely worth it if you can get it on sale. Mountain Hardwear makes good stuff.
True to rating, and it won't scorch you on warmer summer nights. High quality material that's super comfy, "poofy", and puts me to sleep in minutes. The outer pocket is great for a watch for those early peak ascents. I have but one concern with this bag, and that's the zipper. It has a "catch free" zipper guard, but it got caught in the zipper when I wasn't being careful with it. Easy fix, and what zipper is completely catch free? Zipper length is nice to vent out your feet if needed. The collar wraps around well without suffocating you. It's roomy inside without excess. Stuff size and weight is very practical for the average backpacker. Completely in love with it. I don't plan on buying another bag for a very very long time.
I have to disagree with kevin in the below review. I have owned this lamina, and the lamina 20 for a few years now and mine are both still about as lofty as they were when i bought them. In my opinion, there isn't a better synthetic bag for the price. It packs down to a good size for a synthetic 0 degree (not as small as 0 degree down, but not overly huge that it takes up too much room in a pack). I looked at the stuff size of several other 0 degree synthetic bags and this one is smaller and lighter than most. The temp rating is accurate, and the cut is nice for a little wiggle room. I have stayed warm in this bag down to single digits with just a base layer on. Hey, if it wasnt good, NOLS wouldn't sell it to customers as their bag of choice for cold weather expeditions (they dont allow down). If they use it, ill use it.
I've realized that a 0 degree bag means that you'll survive a 0 degree night, but it might not be super comfortable if you're a cold sleeper. Spent a wicked cold night on Pfiefferhorn (definitely single digits) and was a bit chilly overall, was fine once I put socks and my fleece on. The other 5 nights when the temps were in the teens I was toasty warm though. I'll be in the market for a nice fluffy down -20 bag to replace this.
I'm a warm sleeper and bought this bag for winter mountaineering in washington. It is rarely near zero here - more often temps drop to 10-20 degrees. I am always cold, with a 2" thermarest or a z-rest, in a bivy sack, tent or snow cave. I bought this bag as when I was young and dumb, i used a mountain hardware phantom 32 year round - and wasn't too cold at night with my puffy coat on in the winter. I can't say this is much of an improvement, and is 3lbs heavier! I understand this is a cheap bag, but that should reflect the bulkyness - i have much less respect for mountain hardware after using this bag.
I'll admit, I got this bag for free, but not for reviewing, just got lucky. Its fill is light and fluffy unlike a lot of other synthetic bags, and performs much like a down bag, but will hold up to water a lot better. It packs very small, but also runs a bit small. I'm 6'6" or so, and I got a regular length, which under most circumstances would be just within my size range. This however, was very tight length wise, but has a bit of room in the width still so I can adjust the way I sleep accordingly. Its not the best, but it does the job, however, I'd probably look into something else.
Dude! You are 6'6"!! I would NOT consider that average height haha, you're tall! Definitely find a bag that's longer, because I'm 5'4" and I usually get the regular length bags. :D
