Small and tweaky

By:

The width is at the center and it tapers at the ends making it to small of even my smallest pads. Won't lay flat on the ground unless staked out hard and that isn't good. The ties and bug net cover and tough to work with one hand.

All-around good tent, but a recurring tearing problem

By:
February 7, 2011

I work at a university outdoor recreation/rental center and for over a year now we have used Hammerhead 2 and 3 tents for rentals to students. All around, this is a good tent that has stood up well to the heavy use and abuse that rentals typically get; it's not overly complicated and its good quality. Most of the good things that have been said about it here are accurate, but one problem that we have had with the Hammerhead 2 and 3 tents is that they have a recurring tendency to tear in a certain spot.

On the inside of the tent the nylon body often separates from the zipper along the bottom of the main large overhead mesh window (that's a lot of adjectives). We have had no less than ten tents rip in this same spot, and it seems it is the result of being stretched too tightly between the framing. An extra inch of fabric might make all the difference.

That being said, Mountain Hardwear has been very quick to replace any tent that has this problem free of charge, no questions asked. Their staff is very friendly and helpful, and all it takes is a phone call to get it covered by their warranty and have another one shipped to you. All the same, though, it is still an inconvenience one would rather not deal with.

Outside of this small deficiency the Hammerhead is a good bet.
