Down is just as functional on the city streets as it is in the mountains, which is why Mountain Hardwear designed the Women’s Downtown Down Coat. This long-length puffy feature toasty 650-fill goose down and a plush fleece lining for big-time winter comfort. The insulated, removable hood features faux-fur trim for some urban style.
Ira. If you are looking for a warm, slightly more technical, down jacket I would look no further than the Hunker Down Parka from Mountain Hardwear. It is a great value and will keep you super warm! I hope this info helps!
Bought this and TNF Upper West Side to try out after concludng that Patagonia Fiona wasn't warm enough. First thought was that it was too heavy for DC, but I wanted something for our coldest days when walking the dogs is an unpleasant chore, and the 15 minute walk between downtown offices I do a few times a week make me whimper. The pluses were the detachable hood, shaped silloutte (which is important n a puffier coat), above the knee length, yummy plush lining, and quality. Disn't love the look of the Other coat as much. Two days after the decision the temerature dipped and the winds picked up, resulting in wind chills of <20. I have happily walked the pooches, and even went an extra mile because I was so comfy. I am 5-6, 160, and bought a L, which gives me plenty of room for layers - or even a suit jacket. Happy customer!
I originally ordered this coat in L black but had to send it back because it was too big. I'm 5'8", weigh 150 lbs and have a sporty build. I couldn't get the coat in a M black so I ordered purple. I'm so glad black wasn't available in my size because the purple is really nice, the photo doesn't do it justice! I live in Switzerland and at the moment it's -16°, so glad I have this great coat to keep me warm! The size is perfect as there is enough room for a warm sweater to fit comfortably underneath without making the coat fit snug. It is also amazingly light. I have received a lot of compliments on this coat and I love wearing it!
BEST COAT I have ever owned!! Very light weight but extremely warm and cozy. What I noticed it how cold I was everywhere that the coat didn't cover. Stop looking now and buy this one!
I usually wear a medium and bought a large in this jacket. I love how it fits but is baggy. i wouldn't want to go to a medium. I would say if you want a tighter fit go medium, layer fit go large

I just got this coat in the mail a few days ago and I love it. I am 5'6 and weigh about 115 lbs. I got the Small and it fits well even with layers. It also has a draw string around the waste for a nice hour glass shape. The hood fits well and is very comfortable. The fur is removable which is an added plus. The coat does not come with thumb loops though as advertised on their website and the coat's tag. It hasn't gotten too cold yet only just below freezing but with a strong wind the extra length is amazing! I love being able to go out side and stay warm in this great long down coat!
I love this coat! I have had it three months and have never liked a coat more than this one. The fleece lining is cozy. The down is light weight and warm. For the first time I am not cold....and so happy. No problem with loose feathers. Great pockets and I like the inside sleeve cuffs. I am 6' tall, 160 pounds, and the XL fits great. Sleeves are long enough and it hits about 6 inches above the knee - long enough to provide a layer of warmth when I sit down. The coat fits well alone and I can also wear with thick sweaters.
I stressed over which coat was best -- I bought three and kept this one. A great choice as I can wear it with suits to work or with jeans to a football game.
I'm the same height and weight as Mrs. D's mom, a bit bigger on top though, and I also wear a medium. It fits fine with just a long sleeved shirt or with a couple of layers.
I live in Boston, and spend tons of time at freezing cold hockey rinks watching my two boys play. You simply can't beat down for warmth, and this coat not only is warm but is also flattering! The photo really doesn't do it justice. The hood gives full coverage without flopping in your face, and the drawstring allows you to keep it snug around your face. The furry lining is a dream, and NOT having it inside the sleeves means the sleeves glide and on and off over your clothing without sacrificing warmth or wind protection. This coat is WARM and TOASTY! And, I got it in the purple color which is gorgeous -- not overly bright or garish, really a perfect wine color. I couldn't be happier with this coat -- YAY!!!
Going to Copenhagen Denmark for 6 months starting January, is
Going to Copenhagen Denmark for 6 months starting January, is this Coat the one? I see that temps can get to 0 depending, I want to be prepared. Im from the Bahamas, and everything is cold to me so I know Copenhagen will be FREEZING! Any suggestions if this isn't the one?
In my opinion this could be a good coat if it stays dry and you layer. I live in Utah, where it can get cold, regularly in the teens and below 0 Farenheit from time to time. What has worked best for me is layering. When it is very cold I will use a merino wool base layer or two, a fleece mid layer, and a shell. There is some debate as to which shells are best, but I like to use a soft-shell because when it get very cold because at those temperatures it usually is just snow and not rain. Softshells have done pretty well for me. That leads us to this coat. Down does well when it is cold, but if it gets wet it is almost useless so keep that in mind as you look. Best of luck!
I live in San Diego, but visit my family in the Northeast in the winter and this is the perfect weight coat. It's super light to carry on the plane, and kept me warm this past trip in 20-40 degree weather. The fit is a true fit - I wear and extra small in most things and this coat in the extra small fits fine, even with a sweater underneath.
Hey Kathleen, there is a sizing chart just below the price at the top of the page. I have found the charts to be a good resource and mostly accurate. According to the chart XS is comparable to a size 2. Possibly what works best for me is to measure chest and waist when looking at coats. Hope this helps.
I cannot say enough about how amazing this coat is. It's super light weight and compressible yet warm enough to withstand Canada winter. Also, the coat is more fitted than the picture on this site - I did not feel like the Michelan Man (or woman). Normally on trips I can only pack one coat. With this one it's so small I can bring two -fashion and practical. Warmth - So warm I was able to be a pedestrian in Canada in January. I am petite, and the XS fits way better than any North Face I have tried. Or, frankly any technical coats. 5'1 100lbs. Any bigger than this I would suggest moving beyond the XS. The fleece on the inside is cozy, love the fitted cuffs. Haven't used the drawstring yet because I haven't needed to. Great value.
Kathleen. That is exactly it... it is kind of a cross between white and grey. An off white if you will. It has been a very popular color! I hope this info helps!
The fit is fantastic. I am 5'3 at 145 lbs and the Large fits perfectly. There's just enough room to layer if I want but it isn't necessary. I read other reviews that complained about the sleve length but the sleve length is perfect for me. I don't think I've tried on a coat that fit any better. I live in Chicago and we've had a mild winter so far but even on the coldest days at 5 degrees, this coat has been very warm. I haven't been able to test it in the coldest weather conditions yet but I'm confident this coat will hold it's own. What I love about it also is that it's lightweight and stylish. I got this as a gift and it's been perfect.
I'm thinking about purchasing the Winter White which will
I'm thinking about purchasing the Winter White which will be a huge change for me because I tend to buy Black everything, but the White is pretty and on sale!! Anybody have any experience with this coat in white? Hard to keep clean?
I found this coat to be very bulky - marshmallow like in shape. Not stylish enough for downtown use but probably warm enough. The Dolomite color was more drab and not cheerful looking - not glamourous like a lighter/brighter shade would be, and the faux fur looked very fake. I was very disappointed.
I think the 2008 version with the slimming waste style was much nicer. Should still be available.
I'm 5'4" and 115 lbs. I want to wear layers under the coat as I will be wearing in the cold a lot. I'm deciding between the small or medium. What do you think?
This coat fits perfectly. It's lightweight but warm. The inside fleece is soooo soft & comfy. The arms have full motion, so I can even drive in it. But it's not wind proof. In the northeast, the winter winds go right through :(
I bought this coat along with the Patagonia downtown parka with the intention of sending one back. I chose the Patagonia one over this one because I liked the fabric, style and fit better. Having said that, I would add that the Patagonia parka is $150 more so they're not exactly equivalent. For its price range the mountain hardware parka is very nice. The hood is great as is the drawstrings provided at neck and waist. The fleece is soft in the body and at the neck. I am short waisted and the drawstring waist made a good fit. I ordered the medium and the body fit well but I felt like the arms were a bit cold and billowy even with a sweater. I normally wear a 6 to 8. You can ecspect this parka to keep you nice and warm with layers in very cold weather like we have here in Michigan but you do need layers in the coldest weather. A decent buy for the price
After reading mutliple reviews to figure out which size would
After reading mutliple reviews to figure out which size would work best for me, I am still torn between small and medium. I am 5 ft 4 inches, about 130 to 125 lbs, with an athletic build. I plan on using this jacket as a going out at night jacket, so I would probably be wearing non bulky items underneath for the most part. Any suggestions? Thanks!
krismass. I would bet that you would be most comfortable in a medium. Others with similar dimensions have picked up mediums with no negative reports. Hope this helps!
I am 5'4" and 113 lbs. and I fit somewhere between an xs and small. I tried on the x-small at a store and really liked how soft and lightweight it was. The xs, however, was too small around the neck and I couldn't zip all the up to my chin and if I did, it was way too tight. So I ordered the small and the arms and shoulders were too big (Michelin effect) and very disproportionate. I could get over the displeasing look as long as I was kept warm, but it didn't do the job. I took it out for a windy, high 20s evening and I was so cold that all I could think about was returning the jacket once I got home. It's a great jacket (albeit ugly) for any temperature over 35 and no wind, but not worth the money if it can't withstand anything lower.
Recieved the coat today and love the fit ( I'm 5'3 and about 140lbs) but, the color is more of a wine/burgundy color then the purple in the picture. Returning it for the Med Black.
Backcountry is paying the shipping back and free shipping on the new one, awesome service !!!
I would bet a medium. I'm 5' and 125 lbs and I wouldn't want any smaller. The length is 36" - it comes to just above my knees - so it is likely to be about knee length on you too.
This coat is great. It's lightweight, comfortable, and cozy inside w/ the plush interior. It has really kept me warm on super cold days. I'm thrilled with my purchase. It has also been a pleasure dealing with the people at Backcountry. Friendly service and quick shipments. I will be a return customer!
This coat looks great. How is the brown color? I don't want
This coat looks great. How is the brown color? I don't want it to be shiny, ultimately wanted the black... I'm 5'9" around 140lbs, long arms... med or large? I tend to want the large, but don't want it to look too bulky in the body. Thanks!
I am the exact same size as you...5'9, 142 lbs. I have the brown, and it is not too shiny. I have gotten a ton of compliments, even at the grocery store. People just say, what a beautiful coat! I tried the medium, that's what I usually wear, but it felt snug. It looked fine, arms were long enough, but it felt if I put a heavy sweater under it, it would be too uncomfortable. I posted my photo wearing the brown, and now I see it's on sale! Rats! But I do love this coat, and believe it is the nicest and warmest coat I have ever owned. And so light weight. Couldn't believe that it keeps me as warm as it does. You can't go wrong!!
Bought this for my wife and she lives in it on the harsh winter days. The lengthiness is great, and the softness of the coat is hard to describe. It is very soft, unlike other puffys or downs I've seen.
Just got this coat in the mail.. Very cute and warm. My only complaint is the sleeve length. They are at least an inch or two away from being an acceptable length. I guess my arms are a little on the long side but have never had this problem before with a coat. I'm considering returning based on this alone. I'm 5'5'' 115 pounds and got an xs. Having said that I love everything else about this coat! It's especially nice that you can bring in the waist, and has a very cozy fleece lining.
I have two questions....
I saw a review on another website.
I have two questions.... I saw a review on another website. The customer stated the cleaning instructions the coat came with said it could be machine washed in a front loading washer, but had to be dried in a commercial drier - a home drier would be too hot. Is that true? Can it be dry cleaned? Also, before I was serious about this coat, I tried it on in a store. At the time I thought it was more money than I would want to spend. After doing more research, I've realized I'm probably going to have to spend this amount of money for the warmth I'm looking for. I thought it was very cozy, but the XS felt a little tight through the back. And I didn't pay enough attention to the length. I'm 5' 2'' and just less than 100 lbs. Judging by others' reviews, I would think I'd be XS - would the S be huge? And how long would it be?
Liz. I can help you out with the sizing question. Small will not be huge on you. My girlfriend is of similar dimensions and prefers small over x-small. Mike is correct re: the dryer beta. Actually, the commercial dryers are the dryers that get to hot. Your home dryer should do the job no problem. The tennis ball beta is good as well to help re-loft the down once wet. Pick up 'Down Wash' from Nikwax and use this for washing down or any insulated jacket no matter the insulation. I hope this info helps!
Hi Liz, sorry I can't help you with the sizing but most down jackets can be dried in your home dryer on the delicate cycle. I toss in about 4 or 5 tennis balls with it. The tennis balls do a great job of restoring the original loft to the jacket. They also make special down detergent, the sell it at this site.
I got this coat for my wife. It looks fantastic in the mountains or in the city. She has never complained about being cold in it even on cold nights walking to dinner in the mountains. Looks great. I would recommend this coat.
when I dry my down coats or blankets, I throw 3 tennis balls in with them to fluff the down and keep from bunching and going flat (have a pack of balls in my laundry room just for this purpose)
Most down jackets are washable but extra care is needed. it is very important how they are washed and how they are fluffed to regain their loft. Washing machines with center agitators can damage a down jacket beyond repair when used on an aggressive cycle. There are many websites with detailed instructions or I can link them if you can't find them.
This coat is too short in length for my liking, also outer fabric appeared very thin, flimsy. But I returned it, because I would like it to be long to the knees.

I interested about this coat in white colour and size L, but I´m not from U.S. Is it possible for you to send it to Czech Republic? If yes, is it possible to make a paiment via PayPal ot Visa? Thank you very much for your answer.

I bought this for my wife and she is just darn foxy in it. It covers her bum, she likes that, I don't. It is Mountain Hardware so we know the quality is rock solid, and it looks good too on the streets of Park City, where competition is high.
geb. I can't say for sure but I will say that a little bit of down leakage from down coats and jackets is a fact of life no matter what the brand or fabric jacket you have. Some fabrics are better than others and the fabric of this particular coat, a 30D Taffeta with a fleece back, is really nice and down-proof... but, a little down will sometimes leak out through the seams. I hope this info helps.
I bought this coat for my daughter when she moved to the mountains in Colorado last year. She loved it so much that I bought one for myself -- perfect for our hearty midwest winters and keeps me toasty warm even when it's below zero. Fur trim hood is snug and warm. Coat has shapely fit - I"m 5'5 - 130 lbs - a size M is perfect fit. Now the other 2 girls have put in orders for their Christmas gifts this year!
Karen, I am 5'6" and weigh 120 too(!!), and I JUST got this coat in a small. Without a bulky sweater, it fits perfectly. When I put it on with a couple layers underneath (tank, long sleeve shirt and sweatshirt), I felt a little tightness in the shoulders. So basically we're kind of between sizes and ultimately you'll have to decide how you like your clothes to fit and whether you'll mostly be wearing it with thicker layers. If you have narrow shoulders the small should be okay. But if your shoulders are normal to wide the medium might be better for you. One good thing is that the coat has a drawstring, so you can cinch the waist a little and make the medium fit a little better. (I haven't even decided yet if I'll exchange sizes.)
This coat is fantastic in every way! I'm 5'2", 110 lbs., and I ordered the XS - it fits perfect. It's snug, but not too snug. The cut of the coat is very feminine and fitted through the waist, and hits about mid-thigh. It's very lightweight and soft, but still very warm. I ordered the Winter White, and it's a beautiful color - somewhere between cream and a bright white. I would highly recommend this coat! Customer service from Backcountry was also fantastic - at checkout I discovered the coat was going to cost even less than what it was being advertised for, plus free shipping and very prompt delivery! I will definitely be a repeat customer!
Kimberly. I would say either a medium or a large based on your height. However, in the medium I am going to bet that the arms will be too short and in a large the body will be too big. I have a feeling though with your dimensions that you have run into this before? I hope this info helps!
My dog took me for a walk on our Atlantic Ocean beach in gale force winds this afternoon, so I got to try out my Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat. I stayed perfectly warm except for my hands, which were gloveless and got quite cold. Had I not been holding the dog leash, I would have used the lovely fleece-lined pockets, which fit my wallet and phone comfortably.
I am 5' tall and about 125 these days, with a big frame and DD bust. I got a medium and it fits perfectly with some room for layering. It has a warm, adjustable hood which stays up, though I haven't decided on whether I will use the fur stuff or not - fortunately it zips off so I have a choice. The ends of the hood Velcro into the collar of the coat, so it acts like an attached hood but is still removable. The hem is just above my knees, and the sleeves are a good length, with soft, knit cuffs to keep out the wind. The only thing I don't love about the Downtown Coat is that it emphasizes my broad shoulders a bit more than I would like, but it's so comfortable and looks good enough otherwise that I can live with it.
There are lots of clever features like the furry lined top, the waist drawcord, the chin liner, the 2-way zipper that actually works properly, and the fairly slimming side panels. There is an interesting pleated detail on the shoulders that is not visible in any picture I've seen, but looks nice. Also, this coat feels incredibly light on at only 2lb 3oz. I don't think you can find another coat that is this warm and looks this good, and that is why I am very happy I bought the Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat.
Hello! I have this coat in white. I wore it all last winter season
Hello! I have this coat in white. I wore it all last winter season and need to clean it, but don't know how exactly to go about it. Most of the general dirtiness is discoloration around the cuffs where my sleeves would lay and at the waist/down the center where things would sit against me. I've tried with a little water just to see what kind of coaxing it might take, but have been too timid to go any further and I know I'm not supposed to dry clean it either.
Marissa. The best way to think of this jacket is as a sleeping bag! I would clean it just like a sleeping bag. There should be care and feeding instructions in the jacket itself but if not, here are the directions for cleaning right off the Hardwear website:
Sleeping Bags:
Zip up all zippers, attach all Velcro, and turn the bag inside out. Wash in a front-loading machine with cold water on the gentle or delicate setting. We recommend that you use the minimum amount of cleaning agent and scrub the head and foot sections before washing the entire bag. Use at least two rinse cycles to get all of the soap out of the garment. For down, use a mild powder soap, or special down soap (available at outdoor product stores). For synthetic bags, use a mild powder soap or special synthetic cleaning product.
Lift bags by carefully carrying them from the bottom when transporting from washer to dryer. Tumble dry in a large commercial dryer on low heat; it's important that the dryer is large enough for the bag to flop freely around. Drying takes several hours, and you should check your bag often to ensure it's not overheated.
As a down bag dries, look for clumps of wet down and shake the bag gently to redistribute the down. Sometimes the down in the draft tube will need some gentle massaging during the drying cycle. As a synthetic bag dries, check for even distribution of fill material. Gently massage the bag if any bunching is detected.
Both our down and synthetic sleeping bags can be professionally washed. Check the yellow pages under camping, backpacking, or mountaineering equipment for folks who specialize in cleaning outdoor products. Your local retailer may also be able to refer you. Never dry clean a Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag - the chemicals used are harmful to the fabrics and filling and will severly reduce loft and thermal efficiency.
Here's a list of no-no's for cleaning your sleeping bag:
* Don't use a top-loading washing machine (agitator will destroy the baffles in the bag). * Don't use liquid soap or detergent, or a very strong soap or detergent. * Don't use your home dryer - they've been known to melt holes in fabric. * Do not lift your bag from one end when wet (lift the entire bag all at once from underneath). * Do not store in a stuff sack (use a larger storage sack which allows for air circulation). * Do not dry in the sun (the UV will damage the nylon).
-------------------------------------------- I hope this info helps. And if you want more specific instructions from a real person feel free to give Mountain Hardwear warranty a call at 800-330-6800.
Lightweight and super warm. I wish the sleeves were a bit longer though. It's not the most flattering coat, I look like the marshmallow man from Ghostbusters. the brown color wasn't as chocolatey as I hoped. But overall it is a nice coat to keep warm.
I guess it depends on the fit you want and whether you plan on wearing bulky sweaters underneath. I'm 5'1" 120 and I have a small. It fits me perfectly but I noticed a little big on the arms (awkward bulge on the shoulders). Either an extra small or a small would fit you fine. The length is perfect too (hits a little past the mid-thigh for me).
I bought this for my wife for Christmas 2010. Every time she comes in the house, out of the cold - she say's " I Love This Coat - Thank You Honey". Nuff said! Buy it! - you wont be disappointed.
kir. The Downtown Coat is not a waterproof jacket. It has a DWR (durable water repellent finish) on the outside of the jacket to repel water but it is not waterproof. I hope this answers your question. Thanks!
After at least 2 coats as gifts to my wife of similar style, I found the MH Downtown Down Coat. Life saver! She loved it and has especially loved having it for the cold Nebraska winters.
She says she loves the look, the length, the fit and the warmth. My wife is about 5'6" and 115lbs and the small fit perfectly for her.
Thanks Backcountry for the always great service on shipping and help!
What is the temperature rating on this jacket? and How long is
What is the temperature rating on this jacket? and How long is it? I'm looking for a very warm jacket for temperatures in the -20 and -30's. Minnesota can get pretty chilly in the winter!
Sierra. Unfortunately, we don't give jackets like this a temperature rating. Due to the countless variables that a jacket and it's user encounter coupled with individual metabolism getting the rating right is near impossible. With that said, this is a very warm jacket that utilizes over 230grams of 650-Fill down and has a very warm fleece lining! The "center back length" on this jacket is 36" which is well below the waist. I hope this info helps and that you stay warm this winter! Cheers.
Likes: 1. lightweight 2. warm (a heckuva lot warmer than my wool coat, but i wish it were a little warmer) 3. adaptable (has a hood with removable "fur" trim, has stretchy toggles on the interior of the waist so you can loosen or tighten as you please) 4. zippered pockets 5. zippered inside pocket 6. elastic cuffs (that yes, would be better with thumb holes). 7. double-zippered front (so you can free your legs up when tromping in 2' snow banks).
Dislikes: 1. the coat is so darn static-y. i rubbed it with a dryer sheet and it reduced the static a bit, albeit temporarily. i would LOVE to know how i could get rid of the static altogether. 2. some feathers have popped out in the past few weeks. about 10 or so, which in the grand scheme of things isn't that much. 3. it's totally weird how the front zippers doesn't match the pocket zippers... but i guess this is more of a practical purchase.
All in all, a really nice coat, and I feel pretty good about the $ I spent on it. I see it lasting for me for at least 2 more years.
I'm going to Moscow, Russia this winter. I'm in need
I'm going to Moscow, Russia this winter. I'm in need of a good winter coat. I just bought this Downtown Jacket due to it's length. After receiving it I'm questioning how warm this could be. It seems so thin. It may do well in 30 degree weather, but I'm not sure about 0-20 degree weather. I'm thinking the Sub Zero jacket instead now, but I really want the extra length of this Downtown Jacket.
Can anyone attest to the warmth in 0-20 F weather? Also how about it's wind protection and waterproof. Maybe looks/feel can be deceiving, but I'm having a problem thinking this jacket's going to live up, and there's no way I'm getting off the plane in Russia without a good jacket!
Oh and there definitely are not any thumb loops, this really should be taken off the description of the jacket.
It depends on how warm or cold you tend to be. I'm always freezing so for 0°F I'd definitely get something warmer - however, there are plenty of folks below who say they've kept warm in those temps, so it's really up to your personal comfort level. I used to live in New Hampshire where 0°F temperatures that dip into -20°F and -30°F with wind chill weren't uncommon at all. I tested TONS of coats and found that on the really bitterly cold days with biting wind, the North Face Triple C was the best. I LOVED it. It protected well from the wind and the ankle-length and 700-fill really made a difference vs. lower fill coats. I'd pull the puffy hood up over a fleece hat, mittens, and knee-high boots and I was warm from my head to my feet. It was great. I got it on sale for ~$150, which was a great price. If you're looking for something knee-length that's also super warm, I'd recommend the Patagonia Downtown Loft if you've got the dough to spend. It's super stylish and has a way cuter fit. In general, all of these coats will be water resistant but not water proof. You'll need to look into technical down parkas to find waterproof fabric. Hope this is helpful! Udachi!
I have had this coat for a couple of weeks now and because my metabolism is on low most of the time I was very much interested in warmth. This jacket is so light weight you'd have a hard time beliveing how warm it is. I got the extra large and there is plenty of room for big sweaters underneath. Nice long sleeves and I especially like the cozy fleece in the pockets wich really keep my hands warm. I tried this out in very cold weather and was shocked that when I walked outside I didn't notice a change in temperature at all, this was a new experience for me. Then after going for my walk I noticed I was cold, but not where the coat was only my legs that weren't covered. For those who run hot, You can open the zipper to cool off a bit. I am very pleased with this coat. Now, does Mountain Hardware have snow pants? I also bought this coat here for a cool $80 less than anywhere else at the time of purchase. Gotta love that!
i have a trillium in black xs, i dont like the model i recieved
i have a trillium in black xs, i dont like the model i recieved it as a gift if anyone wants to buy it or is willing to switch for kensington parka im up for it. It has all the original tags, never warn, i have the bill and i still have even have the bag from the authentic retailer.
Hey, I was wondering if you can send me a picture. I moved to apparently a freeze zone. Also, if you can give me a ball park number as to how much you would want for it. I'm a student and have a very tight budget.
Love Love Love this jacket. It was almost $100 cheaper on BC then it was at "Dicks". I received it the day before the 1st of many cold streaks in Chicago and it was like wearing a down comforter in the 20below wind chills walking across the river downtown. Its light and snugly and oh so warm...so glad i got it!
Can anyone suggest a size for me, I'm 5'10", slim and ususally wear a size 6 in most clothing. I have long arms and always have a problem getting coats that provide the proper arm length. I don't want the coat to look bulky and big. this would be my first down coat,
I am 5'7" and have long arms also and have the same problem. You will not be disappointed. My size 8 has plenty of length in the sleeve (no gap with my mittens).
I give only 4 stars, since this coat is not best for windy and freezing winter in Midwest. If you live in other regions, this coat would be perfect (or may be too warm).
The coat is somewhat thinner than I expected. I usually wear two long-sleeve t-shirts under the coat, and it is totally fine when the temperature is above 10-20 F. I need to wear a sweater when the temperature goes down. The coat is long enough to cover my thigh, but when wind blows, it doesn't give much protection - wind just swishes in and my legs get cold.
The inner fleece lining is more like a vest; not in the arms and not down to the waist. It still gives extra warmth, but not enough in windy icy winter.
Oh, feather leaks. It was bad during the first week and got better after that. I have worn this about a month and I rarely notice feather leaks now.
The main reason why I decided to keep this coat was its hood. I LOVE the hood! It fits me so well and comfortable. It is so deep that it completely covers my ears and almost half of my cheeks.
I am 5'7" and 135 lbs and the size 8 is a perfect fit. I usually wear medium in everything. I have long legs and arms, and the sleeves of my coat fit me perfectly.
Allison. Although we are two different companies... I would imagine our fit perimeters would be pretty similar. If you are a medium in TNF then there is a good chance you are a medium in Mountain Hardwear. Hope this helps!
I have been wearing my Downtown coat for a few weeks now in the subzero wind chills of Wisconsin. Even with only a light sweater underneath, it is plenty warm. With the hood, I don't have to carry a hat and scarf. It may not be the most stylish outerwear, but I don't mess around with style when it's this cold! No complaints. (And Backcountry delivered FAST!)
I love the look and color of this coat in Winter White, although
I love the look and color of this coat in Winter White, although I am questioning the thought of wearing white and the maintenance of keeping it clean. Has anyone bought and regretted a white winter coat? Or any reccomendations on keeping it clean?
I was wondering if there is a flap on the inside of the coat to block out the wind coming through the zipper? I noticed that there is not flap on the outside to cover the zipper. I am also assuming the zipper is a two-way zipper? Can someone please confirm.
I waited till the temperature hits 20s before I write the review so I know for sure how warm this coat is. Its really warm. The thin inner layer of the coat makes it so much warmer than other down jackets. I also tried wearing a thin vest in between, it makes it toasty. I bought a white one and wore for about a month already and it does not appear to be dirty yet. By the way, its machine washable. As far as the look, it looks the same as the picture shown. Great product!
What is the major improvement or difference from 2008 model?
What is the major improvement or difference from 2008 model? I could see the removable trim on the hood but what else? Is it puffier and warmer? I own Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Jacket 650 fill and it is very warm and very puffy. I don't mind the puffiness at all because I hate being cold. When I tried the 2008 model, although it was 650 fill, it wasn't warm enough, so I had to return. I want to know if this year's model is similar to Sub Zero Jacket in turms of warmth.
Coconut. This is a re-design from last years model, new lines and all, and I think you will find it a bit warmer as well. The amount of down in the jacket was slightly increased which will help a bit with the warmth. Very different jackets... Sub Zero vs. DownTown Coat and due to the extra length and increase in down you'll find the DownTown to be a bit warmer. Hope this info helps!
I bought this as a gift for my always freezing wife. She loves it. We spend many hours at ice rinks watching our children play hockey so this coat gets used a lot. She likes the fleece lining and style. She has received many compliments.
It is a very light weight jacket. I am 5"1 and I was concerned that it was going to be bulky--and its not :) Its also not too long either. I live in the mountains of Virginia where it gets cold--I have not yet worn it, but it seems like it will be a very warm jacket.
Yes and you can verify this on Mountain Hardware website. I actually tried coat on in a store. What's nice is the panels on the side (along the waist) give this coat a more flattering look rather than going straight down.
I bought a small and I am 5'6.5" and 130 lbs and I agree, it fits with lots of layers underneath it as well. The sleeves are barely on the cusp of being short for me, but I think I have long arms. I realized that if I bought the medium, there are cinches in the waist that could make it fit better, however, I decided to stick with the small. I was disappointed to see that there were no thumbholes as well, but I did like how there is a stretchy elastic cuff to make sure wind and the elements doesn't blow straight up your arm. I also haven't had the chance to test it in the blisteringly cold Chicago winter yet, but I really like it so far.
Marcie. This coat is 36" from the seam at the bottom of the collar to the hem of the jacket in the back. This is called the 'center back length' and is how jackets are measured in length. Hope this helps!
