The Montrail Vitesse Trail Running Shoe is a hardcore shoe whose unique design has earned it a rabid following amongst adventure racers, ultra-marathoners, and runners who don't care much for pavement. The most immediately noticeable thing about the Vitesse is its form-fitting internal bootie. Simply put, the Vitesse feels like a sock when you slip it on, with maximum shoe to foot contact for comfort and control. It's a sock with teeth though. Luggy tread on a stiff sole protects your feet from rocks and debris, with an extra lug outside your instep to add extra protection against ankle roll. Mesh-vented uppers make for great breathability and work with the hydrophobic uppers to dry fast on the fly. No quarter asked and none given for weather or trail conditions with the Vitesse.
Bottom Line:
Trails, trails and more trails. Roads are for wimps.
Well..the tongue of this shoe is attached to the lining on all sides...so I really have to shove my foot into the shoe...It takes two hands to put these on...so it is a pain to put on, but once they are on, they are very stable and comfortable
i can't wait to order this shoe in an 8.5. If you normally wear an 8, I had to go up a half size. Great for those with narrow heals. Hope that they come up with some more colors.
Becky: How can we get Montrail to start making the Montrail Vitesse again? This was such a great all sport shoe. Even if they make a limited amout for a short period of time.
Montrail built some classics people loved and are no longer available. The shoes were the Vitesse and the Hardrock. The Hardrock from 2008 to 2009 became a totally different shoe. People were unhappy even though it is an awesome shoe (and that too will be discontinued...). They just didn't like change. If Montrail didn't change these long-running shoes in their line, the shoe would quickly be outdated in term of technology and wouldn't compare to their competition. So, I guess my point is is, if it did comeback, it wouldn't be the same and people wouldn't like it. Try a Montrail Rockridge or Sabino.
The leather is so thick that these don't really breathe. Not good for a summer trail shoe. Also, they run small. I am an 8.5 and ordered the 9, which was so small it was killing my feet. The best my feet felt all day was when I took these off.
This shoe fits my feet exceptionally well. It has very good support and balance and allows me to walk and run longer, ending with my knees and hips less tired. This is my second pair, and not my last.
A big fan of this shoe for more than 10 years. Loved wearing them on Mt. Whitney, the rim to rim to rim at the Grand Canyon, the Milford Track, etc. No blisters, only comfort.
My wife uses these shoes for daily wear. She has had severe lower leg and foot pain. Started using custom orthotics and initially Montrail over the ankle boots. After several years the orthotics and Montrail Vitesse are all she needs. She tried a variety of shoes that are billed as support, but the Montrail Vitesse are the only ones she has found to work. Great Shoes. Have improved her life dramatically the past 5 plus years.
I've got a wide foot and am prone to twisting my ankles while running trails. These shoes provide great stability (although they are a neutral shoe). They have a wide toebox while being snug around my heel. I wasn't sure that I would like the attached tongue - but it assists in hugging my feet. The only drawback is that the shoes are a little hard to get on because of the attached tongue.
I've worn this shoe for years and nothing fits my feet better: narrow heel and mid-foot, high arch, wider forefoot. With most shoes I get heel-slip -- not with the Vitesse! The support is incredible and cushoning is top-notch. My toes love the roomy toe box.
Unfortunately, quality of construction seems to have slipped in the past couple of years, at least with two of the three pair I've had in that time. One pair had a broken lace loop in very short order (it appeared to have not been securely sewn and pulled away from the shoe on one end) so the shoes could not be properly tightened/laced. Of course this epic store stood behind the shoes. The right shoe of my current pair has poorly sewn inside seams that are opening up/falling apart on the lower part of the shoe -- very disappointing and they've hardly had any wear so I expect better. Good thing I bought them here as this pair is going back for replacement.
The other review that spoke about the surprising satisfaction with these dumb-looking shoes was spot on. They definitely aren't flashy, or really all that cute, but they are far and away the most durable trail runners I've come across in a long time. The way the tongue is attached means that they fit snug on your feet. They are very supportive on the trails, and worked wonders on the Trail marathon I did. (I survived). They also fit true to size, so I was stoked I could actually order them online and not worry about the fit.
They may just be out of that size at this time. Contact Backcountry directly to see if more will be coming in. Click the 'Live Chat' icon in the upper right of the screen to ask a gearhead... good luck!
From the looks, I would have never guessed these shoes would become my favorite shoes. These shoes are very comfortable and fit true to size. I would purchase these shoes again.
