Some 800-fill down jackets have insane puffiness going on. The Marmot Women’s Ama Dablam Down Jacket, however, does not. Hexagon-shaped seams on the Ama Dablam help maintain a low profile.
Down-filled hood for head warmth
DWR coating on the shell helps manage light moisture
Exactly what I was hoping for with a thin winter coat. Love that it isn't super puffy (and quite the opposite actually)! It fits great (I'm 5'2" and 165lbs), and the color choices are awesome. Plus it's a great price. I have only had it for a couple months, but it has kept me warm in -12 degree weather with wind! The only thing I wish it had would be a zip off hood!!
I am trying to determine if there is only one green color (fern).
I am trying to determine if there is only one green color (fern). The stock photo looks so different from the picture of the climber rappelling? Anyone?
The stock photos are all photoshopped, and they never seem to get the colors quite right. Go by the picture of the climber rappelling, that's what the jacket actually looks like.
This lightweight down jacket is one of the most comfortable I've ever put on! It fits great over a climbing helmet and zips up from the bottom to adjust for a harness which is great. It's a lot thinner than I was hoping, but still keeps you plenty warm on a crisp day.
Great coat. Very warm for a "thin" coat. Not bulky at all. The hood adjust's at the neck and at the back to kind of "squeeze" around your ears. Nice addition. I ordered a small but it was a little snug around the hips with a turtleneck and a sweater under neath. Gave it to my daughter and plan to order the medium. I am 5'4", 130 lbs. and not "hippy".
Beautiful jacket but the shape doesn't work for me. I'm 5'5", 120 and have a long torso. I ordered the small but it's much too boxy. There's too much room around the torso and even when the bottom elastic is pulled tight the jacket synches up and reveals my midriff when I lift my arms even a little bit. I'm sad to return it because I love the style, color and warmth, but I doesn't work for me :(
Do you guys who wear your Ama Dablam out on the mountain feel
Do you guys who wear your Ama Dablam out on the mountain feel it's too thin a jacket? I'm looking for a down to get snuggly in at the crag, or camping or just for general wear. People seem to rate the warmness of the jacket but it just seems so thin!! Technology these days eh?!
If you're throwing it on top of something else, and depending on other factors, like if you've just eaten and stuff, I'd say this is good down to about 0C. I have a fast metabolism, so I'd be able to take it down below that, but I'd say that it's a pretty good estimate.
This coat has been awesome for me, from hiking in St. George, Utah to skiing at Snowbird. I am 5' 6" and I got a small and it fits well length wise in the front. I love the hood, it is warm and not too puffy when you wear it. I have used it skiing with two layers under it, and it isn' too tight with layers underneath. I have had this coat for a year now and have loved it, I give it 5 starts for sure!
Runs a little bit small. IE short torso/sleeves when I extend my arms. I ordered an XS, and a small would likely fit better. Unfortunately they're fresh out of smalls. I am 5'4 and have a climbers build... and maybe a long torso?? Warm. Bright! Love the beehive design!
Bought this last week before a ski trip up to Whistler. Got to test it straight away since we had -23C temps with wind on top of that. I combined the jacket with wool, fleece and paclite underneath and was warm all day. This jacket is a winner!

Is Ama Dablam OK for Ama Dablam expedition? or it is rather lower mountaint jacket? Would that keep warm on higher camps? Thanks for recommendation! Reni
This jacket is one of my favorite pieces of clothing I've had for a long while. I've worn it a lot, even on chilly Nordic summer nights. I also had it with me on my trip to Island Peak (6189m) last April, and was wearing it on the summit night/day. Under it I had a 260 merino long sleeved shirt and a Marmot powerstretch hoody + driclime vest, and I was perfectly comfortable even at the -15'C temperature when we started heading for the summit at night. (though coming from Finland, I guess I'm quite used to the cold..) Of course you're heading higher than that, but for my trip this was a really good and light choice.
If you have the right base and mid layer I think this will work. Don't take my word for it though, contact a guide becuase I've never tried it myself! I have the men's version and I love it.
I don't think I'd used it on Ama Dablam. It would not be warm enough. Base camp when weather is good would be fine, otherwise you need a thicker 800 fill down coat.
This is exactly what I was looking for in a down jacket. Its low profile keeps me from look like a marshmallow, but the 800 fill keeps me nice and toasty, even the hold is extremely warm. Perfect belay jacket, or for any other situation. I'm 5'11" 140 and I got a med and it fits me very well. If I wear a helmet with it, it does ride up in the back a little bit, but I really can't complain much. I love it!

How does this jacket hold up against sleet? There are times during winter/spring that we receive sleety/misty/ and very wet snow. Just wondering if the shell fabric is waterproof or at least sort of. Wondering if it wasn't and I added a waterproofer to it, would it ruin the jacket?
It is not waterproof except for the DWR coating on the shell. You could add more DWR but this is still only suffficient for light moisture. I agree with Ryan, you would want an outer hard shell for wet snow or rain.
I am interested in the Wmns Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket. I
I am interested in the Wmns Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket. I think I might be in between in the Small and Medium. I tried on both the new Venus and old Venus in a Medium where I live (Australia) as the nearest comparison, and found a huge difference. The newer medium was a lot more fitted, whilst the older style medium was massive in the arm. The new small felt snug.
Do you know which fit the Methly Blue Ama Dablam would be closest to?
I am 5"6, 125lb, though have relatively broad shoulders when fitting a jacket.
I have the men's version of this jacket and would definitely recommend sizing up if you're between sizes (women's jackets tend to be even more fitted than men's, I find). I also have broad shoulders, and while I fit into a medium when I bought the jacket, I'm glad I went with a men's large. A little extra material just means more cozy-time, which is the point anyway. I love this jacket for cold belays and ski-resort trips, and for when the heating cuts out in the winter.
I have the men's version of this jacket and LOVE it. In answer to your question, yes, the material is 100% polyester DWR ripstop at 1.2 oz/yard. Just how ripstop is it? In a jam, I've been known to do some backcountry bush-whacking in the thing, snagged a couple times, and not had any trouble (though I wouldn't recommend replicating the experiment). Also, because the down is sown in individual "compartments," it not only distributes the material evenly for better insulation, it also makes it easier to isolate and repair rips and snags without loosing much down (which can also be easily replace).
The reviews for this jacket were so great and the sale price was right, so I went for it. I was looking for an awesome cold weather companion for winter climbing belays and cold nights at camp. I wanted a hood and the overall feeling of being wrapped up in a portable sleeping bag, i guess.
The 800 fill is warm and cozy. However, as with so many outdoor clothing manufacturers, the "feminine" cut takes away from some of it's quality and/or functionality. It was short on me. So raising my arms above my head let in all the cold air. Also the hood is apparently designed to fit a helmet, however when you put the hood over your head it pulls the jacket into your armpits creating some constriction. Also the sleeves were borderline short. Not if this was just a casual jacket. But since I was looking for warmth and comfort, this didn't fit the bill. Maybe I'm freakishly proportioned. I then purchased a size larger thinking this might solve my issues, but then everything was just really big and still with an awkward feminine cut.
So... I opted for a men's down jacket of another brand and I'm very very happy with that.

Write your question here...my wine colored size medium ama dablam jacket was stolen the other day and i cant find another online... anyone know of one out there somewhere? favorite jacket ever...
I got this jacket with the intent of it being pretty warm - at least warm enough for a fall and spring and maybe a mild winter. As I've worn it through the single digits I've been amazed by it's ability to keep me warm despite its thickness. I am 5'10" and athletically built and often find that things fir "shot" on me - but this jacket is nice and longer - also great for when backpacking and wearing under a pack.
I've found that because of the jacket's great loft I often am warmer when I only wear a long underwear top underneath instead of a fleece in addition because the fleece get read of the dead air space. When I go backpacking it also converts into a pillow by stuffing it into its own pocket.
I fell into a pond while wearing it once and was able to jump out again pretty fast. My shoes, pants, mittens, and hat were completely soaked, but the polyester shell on this jacket to my big surprise kept out most of the water during to quick unexpected dip so that the jacket still kept me warm while walking back to camp to change. Of course it you stay in water longer it will et wet and loose it's loft, but it can resist it for a little bit.
This is my favorit winter jacket that I have owned so far.
this jacket is SO WARM. it's literally like wearing a sleeping bag. ridiculously lightweight. i don't know how i lasted this long without a jacket like the ama dablam, i have seriously underestimated the power and practicality of "down..."
comfy, warm, fits good, not girly looking but "outdoorsy" the color (blue) is very bright though. Its thinner than most "puffy" coats but it is certainly not any flimsy ulralight jacket
I tried on a medium and had way too much empty space in there.
I tried on a medium and had way too much empty space in there. But I couldnt move my arms in the small and the arms were way too short. Can anyone comment about sizing? I have a 35 inch chest and 28 inch waist. That would seem to make me a medium, but im mot kidding, it was huge! Do you think the one I tried on was made/marked right?
I probably tried on 10 different down jackets before my trip to Mt Rainier and never found one that I really liked. Finally ordered the Marmot Ama Dablam and two others because I was running out of time. This one turned out to be the keeper. I immediately put it to the test on Mt Rainier and then Mt Hood. I never once was cold despite the 40 mph winds on the summit of Rainier, the hood being a definite plus. The jacket allowed complete freedom of movement while on a more technical route on Mt Hood. I also didn't expect to like the color as much as I do, but it really stands out both on the mountain and in pictures.
Because it has a hood and is slightly longer the Ama Dablam weighs a bit more than the Venus. Weights for a medium are: Ama Dablam 1 lb 1 oz Venus 11 oz
This is a great jacket. I loved it even though I did return it due to the color. I got the blue and it was very electric/neon. It was very pretty actually if you like these very bright colors; it was just too bright for me. (It is very true to the appearance in the photos- I just didn't believe it would actually be that bright.) I plan to get one next year in a less neon shade of a similar blue. Unfortunately it will cost me more as this one was on sale. It is a great jacket. It's very light, slim not puffy, yet quite warm esp with the hood as far as I could tell. However, I only put it on and stood outside, as I was returning it. DId not recreate in it. Great features compared to competitiors are the fact that it zips also from the bottom, and you can securely tighten the cuffs. THe hood is also very adjustalble and I love how it packs into its own pocket. The fit is nice. If you have really long arms though I have a feeling the sleeves would be short. It's very very comfy
Travelled through Europe and the US for 7 weeks with this jacket over December, January and absolutely love it. Kept me toasty in temps as low as -29 C, but also great just to wear on my way to work in +8 C at the moment in Australia. I particularly like the big internal pocket, great for storing your passport and other valuables; and the external pockets - very soft and cosy.
Sizing is pretty much as it says. I'm normally an XS or S and went for a S so it could fit over other layers.
I have a few other Marmot items and love them just as much. Great brand.
Write your answer here...Did you take it to base camp? Was it warm enough? My wife is thinking on getting it for our April trip to base camp, but don' t know if is warm enough for everest basecamp.
This coat is a bit longer than most of the down coats I've seen which helps to keep you warmer. Packs well and is very light yet very warm. The stitching on this down coat is unique so you don't get confused with all your friends in the pictures:)
The picture of the 2007 Ama Dablam makes the fabric look shiny.
The picture of the 2007 Ama Dablam makes the fabric look shiny. I'm curious if the fabric used in the current version of the Ama Dablam matte or shiny? Thanks!
I just got this jacket for my wife, I got it because of the hood. Unfortunately, it's cut somewhat unusually. It was really tight in the hips but baggy every where else. It was also cut really high in the front. The whole jacket just didn't really fit right. We returned it for the Mountain Hardware Nitrous Hooded Jacket which fits perfectly, she really hasn't taken it off since she got it.
I am also debating between the Ama Dablam and the Nitrous. I am petitie and am looking for a good fit. More importantly, I live in northern Wisconsin. Is the Nitrous warm enough for -30MPH wind?
I live in ND and we have a lot of below zero temperatures and a lot of wind chills. I was sceptical when I opened the package and saw how thin the coat seemed to be, but now that winter is here I am very pleased how warm the jacket is. It is also very attractive. Good buy!
The sizing is accurate and the fit is very flattering especially when you are a slender small lady who can look like being dressed in a potatoe sack in other jackets. It does not appear to be very thick but provides plenty of warmth. I've got black color and it looks great with everything. Great length - I had to return my Mountain Hardwear jacket because of the length (it was too short and I am only 5'3").
I love outdoor gear that fits and is functional. This jacket is awesome. It is not often you find something warm, and complimenting. Love it, the fit is right. 5'8", 128lbs; medium is perfect for torso and arms. Bee hive look is actually really nice. Thought it might be too much, but looks great on. Thank goodness.
I loved this jacket, at first. I had it two seasons and the fabric started to open at the seams. I left feathers everywhere I went! I sent it back to Marmot and they did not fix it and I waited a month and a half! I sent them a letter and they never responded to me. I would never recommend this jacket to anyone, I just purchased an OR jacket that is pretty much the same and we'll see how it holds out. I will not purchase Marmot again. And just to add: I am very careful with my gear and do not abuse it.
