Mammut Ambler Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Item # MAM0234

Head into cold, unforgiving mountain environments armed with the compressible, insanely warm protection of the Mammut Men’s Ambler Hooded Down Jacket. Stuffed with lightweight, high-lofting 800-fill goose down, the Ambler packs huge heat for stormy days in basecamp, frigid belays, and any other time where a loss of core warmth equals game over. The baffled construction eliminates cold spots, and the internal mesh pockets keep your water bottles from freezing.

Bottom Line:

High-quality insulation for critical alpine realms.

Nice digs

Ok, so I hunted around for a few jackets before snagging this. I looked at the Patagonia Fitz Roy, the Rab Neutrino Plus, and this one. This jacket is packed with down. It’s seriously baffled and is incredibly warm. Unfortunately its been pretty warm up here in the Northeast but I have used it down to about 5 or 10 with minimal layering underneath it, and it is totally sufficient. I also bought this jacket to keep me warm bouldering during the winter. It’s like a sleeping bag out there, great stuff in the 20s with a T shirt or thin layers underneath. Yes this sounds overkill, but I get really cold and like to stay super warm while I recover.

The downside is that the lighter of the 2 materials used does leak feathers. It’s not horrendous like some jackets I have seen, but it does leak through the fabric. The more durable fabric used on the sleeves and seat is burly and will hold up to some serious abuse. The zipper is a bit annoying too, not a huge deal but something to get used to for sure. The seams don’t seem to leak all that bad. Overall I have been pleased. I needed something really heavy to use for mid-winter climbing as a belay/inactive stay warm jacket, as I do have a light weight down jacket. It’s perfect for the really cold days and, as I mentioned, super warm.

Does anyone know the weight of the down fill. I know it's 800 fill quality, but how much of it is in the jacket (in terms of a weight figure). Thanks!

I have owned and tried on a lot of down jackets from different companies. This one takes the cake. it is like being engulfed in a warm light puffy clould. I am 6'3" 225 and this fits great in an XL. Awesome jacket.

Extremely warm and comfortable

Fantastic cold weather coat, can walk around in -40 F with just a t-shirt underneath, and stay warm, fleece on the collar is fantastic. hood is very functional (though silly looking). the torso is a little bit long, which is good, because at the temperatures this is for more coverage around the hips and waist is nice to have. great bitter cold jacket.

No way. For aerobic activities you want to be wearing way less than this. This is a insulating jacket for when you are stationary and its less than 10F.

Super Puffy

By:
January 16, 2011

If you are looking for a down sweater, then this is not the coat for you. It is a bit more bulky than that, BUT if you are looking for a really warm belay jacket with a nice incredibly soft warm hood then take a good look at this one. A bit longer than hip length. Just used mine in Ouray and Skylight areas in 0-10 degees ,and was toasty!! It may be a bit bulky, and overkill for a fast multi pitch 20's plus climb, but it is perfect for cragging, or when its cold!!

Great Concept, Poor Quality

By:
November 8, 2010

I liked everything about this jacket, great fit, super warm. After just a couple of weeks of use though, seams started failing in multiple places. That sucked..... it was a great jacket, but they need to improve on the manufacturing big time!

Greatest jacket ever!

By:
October 13, 2010

This is the warm and most comfortable jacket I've ever had. It is like wearing a down sleeping bag. Great cozy hood and fleece lining makes it extra warm. A must have for anyone living in the mountains.

How long is this jacket?

I am 6'2" and 220lb and I've been reading a few reviews of other jackets - warning to check the length for taller people. This one looks like it has a longer body, can anyone confirm?

Also - how small does this pack down to? Does it come with a stuff sack?

Not sure exactly how long. I'm 6'2" sand it comes down below my waist good bit. This is not like a down sweater but cut like a full expedition parka. One sweet amd warm jacket.

huge value, killer puffy

By:
October 28, 2009

For the price there is no better down parka. This jacket is super puffy and warm. 800+ fill down, baffled like a sleeping bag and great fit. Series of inside pockets are great. Pictures here don't do this justice.

it won't be a problem, light yet tough fabric on the shoulders and elbow to wrist. Thoughtfully designed.

Shoulders have a reinforced fabric, still light but Shoulder straps would not be a problem on either of the fabrics on this jacket. Really great piece.

Light and warm

By:
February 4, 2010

Thoughtfully designed down parka. for the amount of protection this provides, it is really light weight. nice hood fits over a helmet. The collar is soft and covers your face when it is zipped up. Plenty of exterior zipped pockets. Huge internal pockets can fit loads of gear. Super warm. Great base camp jacket or belay jacket while ice cragging. Certainly warm enough for 8000 meter peaks.
