Try out a killer new day hike in the Keen Men's Targhee II Hiking Shoes. The eVENT waterproof barrier keeps your feet dry as you stomp through puddles and comfortable on the rocky sections of the trail. The waterproof leather upper blocks out moisture so your feet stay dry and the AEGIS Microbe Shield Treated Mesh Lining wicks sweat, which keeps you blister-free. The ESS shank provides your foot with great stability on those super steep sections, and the Secure-Fit Lace Capture System gives you easy control over the tightness of your laces.
Bottom Line:
New trails are waiting to be discovered. Go and find 'em in the Keen Targhee II Hiking Shoes.
Great shoes, order 1/2 size bigger for your foot! Light hikers, excellent stability!!!!!!!!! Be careful, Keen seems to need better inspectors for defects in their products, although I wear them almost exclusively, I have had to return for silly defects across different types of their shoes. However, that said. I love the shoes they make!
First off, I have really difficult feet. I wear custom insoles, so I need a shoe with a lot of volume. The other Keen shoes and sandals I own fit the bill perfectly, but I just couldn't get these shoes to fit comfortably. In my experience all Keen shoes run small. These are no exception. I buy all Keen shoes a 1/2 size larger than what I normally wear and the Targhee IIs were still just a tad small. I possibly could have used them, but in my experience, it's always better when you're dealing with footwear to go bigger versus smaller. At that size the shoes would not have allowed any room for my feet to swell after a long hike. I decided to send them back and get a full size larger than what I would normally wear. These were much better, but I just couldn't get the laces cranked down hard enough to keep my heels from slipping. Something that would certainly cause hot spots and blisters on long ascents. I love Keen footwear and I'm just bummed that I couldn't get these to work. On a more positive side, I found them to be surprisingly light. Their appearance makes them look like they would weigh much more than they actually do. They were also very stiff and supportive. Much more so than other light hikers I've tried. This may, or may not be a plus for some people. I personally like that feature in a shoe. They also appeared to be very well built. I would expect these shoes to log on many miles before any significant signs of wear. The tongue was well padded and I didn't notice any pinching even when really cranking down the laces. I can't speak to the waterproofness of these shoes as I didn't try them in any wet environments. The Event liner did make them rather warm, but not anymore so than any other Gore-Tex lined shoe I've worn. If you don't have odd shaped feet like I do these shoes will probably work for you like a champ.
I have loved using these for pretty extensive hikes and casual use. I like how they have you stand/walk higher then more shoes, like a Dansko. The event is really solid too, it will take a nikwax if you so desire, and does great with blocking out water and other stuff. As far as the size goes, they fit bigger if anything, so the previous review might be good for abnormal feet, which I don't think I have. I absolutely love the rubber toe, its such a nice feature and almost a compliment to the customer so we don't have to buy a new pair of shoes all the time. So basically if you want a shoe that feels light, totally burly, and waterproof, go for this one. I got the walnut and from the picture, it looks lighter in person.
i have had 3 pairs of these 1/2 size larger fit great. But not all keens are the same unfortunately! recently bought a diff pair of keens that were too big 1/2 sie larger... go figure!
Such a comfortable pair of shoes. Great for everyday wear and for day hikes. I was excited to try out the eVent lining, but it hasn't turned out to be any cooler or more breathable then my last pair of shoes with XCR. They are comfortable. Seem a little hunky and big at times. The tongue bunches up a bit when they are tied up. Worked out great in the slush walking to class everyday though. Waterproofness has not been an issue at all.
this is my 3rd pair. size 1/2 size large. Three pairs in 2 years I think or thereabouts of everyday wear. real nice on trails for light hiking shoes. I own 5 different pair of Keen Shoes. My only complaint is I have encountered a number of factory defects in their shoes, I have had to return more than one pair over the past three years for manufacture issues which makes me wonder how they passed their inspector. But It has always been worth the return to the store because the replacements have been great. These shoes have Excellent stability. I have used these Targhee II shoes in the woods on the break walls when fishing, urban atmosphere.
i've noticed in my girlfriend's keen's that they aren't known for the longevity of their soles. they wear out quicker than normal boots and they tear at seams where they stitch 2 different materials together. keen is more popular for comfort, and not for outdoor fanatics that want their gear to last forever. but they'll do the job...temporarily. i prefer vasque, la sportiva, montrail, and any other shoe with a vibram or skywalk sole.
I bought these for the walking part of my commute between the bus, office and home. I have worn them in snow, ice, shush and water. These shoes have proven to be very durable with excellent traction.
My only concern is that the top eyelet is fabric. I'm hoping it will not break from tugging when I tie my shoes. No reason to think it will.
I use Targhee II for trail hikes through forest or trails with light gravel/ mountainous and coastal rock are hard on this shoe, but does offer good grip on surfaces. Overall, very comfortable and supportive shoe.
I have used Keen in the past and their wide toe box and classic fit keeps me coming back. I use these for my everyday shoes and some light hiking. Not my shoe of preference for full day hikes but for a casual stroll they work great. The shank really stiffens up the sole to be able to carry a 15 pound pack with more comfort. True to size.
I just bought a pair of these low-cuts the other day, after enjoying a pair of the mid-cuts for the past year. I like the wide toe box and the rubber toe covering for roots and rocks. Keen's sizing is puzzling. I have a pair of Keen Austin casual shoes, size 10, that fit fine. But when I tried the Targhee mid-cuts in 10, they were way too small. I got the 10.5 and have been wearing them. But still they were a bit snug for trail work and hikes. Last week the soles began to delaminate, i.e., the black pointed rubber was coming unglued from the gray sole base. I took it back to the store and actually got to exchange the pair for a new pair -- this time in a size 11. I like the 11 best. I just finished a nature hike with my Targhee low-cuts, size 11, and really prefer that size. However, all my other boots and shoes are size 10. So, watch out when buying. Try them on and walk around. I have narrow feet -- B -- and even narrower heels. I have not had problems with heel slippage. For hikes, though, I usually wear a thin sock liner under my socks to prevent potential rubbing. These Targhee II shoes and boots are well worth it.
I REALLY wanted to love these shoes...but just couldn't. They looked cool, and were comfortable, but my heal was slipping out of them every step. I take a 9.5, and the 10 was closer to size, but still the heal was pulling out. I thought I found what I was looking for. Maybe if you have a thicker heal it may work. Better try these on at a local store before buying. If the heal fits BUY THEM. I wish it fit me.
I have very average feet, I bought 1/2 size large and they fit nicely out of the box. When compared to hiking boots and not tennis shoes they quickly fit nicely for extended wear. The toe box is not as large as my other Keens (everyday shoes bronx I think) but the other reviews are correct most of the adapting was in the heels. After 2 days they are like gloves.
The "Black Olive/Jester Red" is not the same as the picture! The picture shows a gray shoe while it is actually more of an olive color. Little disappointed that they didn't check this before posting it online...
I'm on my second pair and really like them. I have wide feet and they work well for me. My first pair had some glue issues on the sole, where the bottom tread unglued on the small strips that wrap up the side. Shoe goo fixed it. The fabric in the heel is also worn through, but I use them actively.
Noel Corpruz,Keen shoes come in 1 standard width. For the Targhee it could be compared to a D/E. If you are 4E you will not fit this boot properly. Unfortunately there are not a lot of options when it comes to the extra wide with hiking boots. Your best bet is probably the New Balance MO1500, it has vibram sole, gore linning, and it comes in 4E!Mahalo, Sumo
I've had the Keen Targhee II hikers for a few weeks now and love them. i use them for kicking around and when my feet need some soothing comfort. They are warm but very comfortable. i putchased them in the woring size and was delighted to discover that Backcountry has great customer service.
I really like the features of Keen Targhee, waterproofing, S3 sole, blisterfree perect feet (claim to be). But I am not convinced afrer trying three pairs of them. I wear size 9, and ordered one thinking of blister free fit and design. But after second trail hike of 4 miles, my small fingers on both feet developed huge blisters, and toes were sore to touch. I used them twice again with similar results. So contacted Backcountry and they were extremely helpful in getting the exchange to 1/2 size larger. Received the shoes and the sole is separating from the leather upper at various places, the mid sole of the shoes is glued wrongly. It seems Keen has poor quality control. I contacted Backcountry again, and the they were extremely helpful in resolving the issue by exchanging for another pair, but of different color and free shipping both ways. I am not sold on Keen and probably will not consider Keen in the future, but certainly sold on the Backcountry's customer service.
Just received Keen Targhee in mail today. First time Keen buyer and Backcountry shopper. Both with excellent experience. I'm very pleased with Backcountry's customer service and superfast free shipping. As other reviewers described these shoes are very comfortable from very first time, the size is true, I wear size 9 and these fits perfect even without socks. It seems the shoes comforts to the feet after a few minute. I do a lot of trail walking and can't wait to find out how these shoes fare in comfort and durability. My first impression is great.
After wearing the shoes for second time, developed large blisters on both small toes, and entire toe was sore to touch. I wear size 9 and this seems little cramped at toe area. So contacted Backcountry, explained the problem and their customer service resolved the issue in not time by exchanging the shoes for 1/2 size larger. Lets see how do they fare.
These shoes are the most comfortable and soft for walking that I have owned. The downside is the soles wear fast and the fabric at the top of the heel box wore through on both shoes. I used duct tape for a quick fix and it has extended the life of the shoes. However, I won't use them for other than short hikes. I've gone over to the Targhee 11 mids which give more support, but use a full leather boot with Vibram soles for long backpacks in Tasmania and the rougher sandstone areas around Sydney.
I have several pairs of Keen shoes, and they are excellent. This pair didn't fit me well, though, which was a surprise. The main problem was that the tongue was very thick and wrinkly, so it got all bunched up when I tightened the laces ... never had this happen with Keens before. These may be a bit wider than typical Keens (already quite roomy), which would have contributed to the problem. Overall, they seemed like decent quality, but I returned them for the fit problems. Maybe they'll work better for you.
My wife's feet hurt so bad for over a year she had surgery schelduled. We bought a pair ofKeen sandles at the Blackfoot,Id fair. They helped her so much she canceled her operation. Now we both will not wear any other shoe except Keen. They are the most comfortable and we tell everyone we know to log on to Back Country and try some out.
This is my 4th pair. The one drawback is the soles wear out quick which is why I have had to replace them annually. I have used them for casual wear, backpacking, hiking, running, snow blowing when the snow is not too deep, and most everything else. I had one pair replaced by customer service because the toe caps came unglued. Customer service at Keen was very helpful. The store I bought them from was not.
They are not good for dancing because they have too much traction on a dry floor, but the traction is only fair on ice.
The waterproof membrane works well and feet stay dry in shallow puddles. My first pair got too hot but the latter pairs have not. I think they changed the membrane material
I like the wide platform and the insole works well for my foot. I use the insoles for other shoes after the shoes wear out
I have used my Keen's for roughly one month for light hiking, everyday wear, and disc golf. Through the different conditions, I have tried these shoes in a broad variety of terrain, weather, slope, etc. So far, the shoes are extremely comfortable and waterproof. One full day of hiking was in a steady downpour, and my feet remained dry.
The only major drawback i have found so far is the heat. After wearing these shoes for a full day, my feet were extremely HOT. Other owners of the same model have made the same comments.
These shoes look nice when arrived, but when trying them on, oops! The size is off, returning them immediately, can't figure out what size to reorder. Bottom line - not true to size for this model.
This shoe was purchased after trying on many other brands. I tend to be a pronator and could not find a shoe that provided enough support. The Keen hiker seemed to correct my stride quite well. They are also very comfortable - almost like wearing a slipper.
The flip side to this was they seemed to require more control to avoid a 'clunky' walk - you almost feel like a platapus I have heard comments that this shoe had a shorter lifespan and and the rubber sole is prone to shrinking. I have been wearing mine for 10 months quite regularly and have not had issue.
UPDATE The shoes did develop a very annoying heal squeak after a few monthes - this is especially irritating when indoors. Baby powder under the footbed did not solve this. Also the rubber sole does 'shrink over time'. Expect 1 year of service before deterioration of the shoe.
Sizing is off - normally wear a 9 but the toe cap felt too short so had to return it for a 9.5. Fit is good except can't tighten the laces enough so there is not a loose feel in the side and heel. Waterproofing is exactly what I wanted. Overall very satisfied.
I got these a couple of months ago since my old shoes where falling apart. I have heard good things about Keens so I thought I would try them. They are good quality, and have plenty of room in the toes. However, the arch is much higher in these shoes than in my other shoes. It felt uncomfortable for a while at first, but I think I'm used to it now. Also, the heal is loose. At this point, I guess I'll keep them, but they just don't fit as well as my other shoes.
I bought these because I have other Keen shoes that are comfortable. They have been very comfortable to hike in but they have serious problems. They fit OK but lack a high lacing profile so have less support. During a recent day hike I turned my ankle three times. This never happened with my Merril's. Worse yet, we were on trails that were a bit wet, but by no means soaked and the treads slipped on the rocks repeatedly.
So, in summary. Very comfortable for long periods. Good for walking. Scary for hiking anything other than than buff trails.
I was and am planning to use it for hiking on reasonably simple trails. Tested it on Old Rag Mountain in Va (very rocky, scrambling trail) worked very well for me. Very comfortable.
Targhee II is a very comfortable shoe for normal hiking but one has to be very careful while hiking in the mountains on the wet rocks or going down the gravel like surface. The shoes slip a lot. A long hike down the mountain on intensly downsloping trail could be quite unconfortable in these shoes. I had to get a replacement pair because the stiching on one shoe completely opened only after 5 hikes. Otherwise they are great for normal trails.
I bought this shoe after having problems with most of the hiking boots I tried on. What a difference! No more ankle pain from rubbing and the back of the shoe isn't just a piece of plastic for your foot to rub against. I've hiked in pretty much every condition and this shoe held up great. Waterproof, light, stiff enough to support your foot but it's not a plank. I can't recommend it enough. I've done multi peak, 22+ mile hikes with these shoes and they held up as good if not better than most boots while being lighter!
Well this is my first Pair of Keen shoes, and I am very satisfied. I must say I did not get them from Backcountry.com (cheaper somehwere else), but I love this site and feel like I should contribute :) I usually wear a size 12, but this shoe was way too tight in a 12. I purchased a size 13, which are slightly loose, but fit nice with a pair of thick hiking socks. I bought them for work as I am outside in all types of conditions all day. They were comfortable right out of the box and keep my feet comfortable even when standing 8+hrs a day. Havent got to experience any true downpours, but they keep my feet dry around puddles and general reainy conditions. My only beef is, the laces are too small and "thin". Its like using twine to tie your shoes. I ended up swithing the laces with my old pair of EMS trail shoes, and works great!
Nice price, simple ordering, immediate shipping, full willingness to solve any problems occurring within shipment, and finally - beautiful shoes, quite as described. No one would hesitate.
I bought a half size bigger but even after breaking in, shoe still felt a little tight. Exchanged for another half size larger, which fit nicely in the forefoot but then started experiencing heel slippage. The heel slippage continued even after a few weeks of break in around town. I didn't want to chance getting stranded on the mountain so I returned them. I've never had this issue with previous Keen purchases.
These might be the perfect outdoor shoe. Warm and tough, stylish and reflective. These shoes are great. Although they are a little warm while wearing them in the office, you will love them for everything outdoors. I thought that they were a little snug at first, but have grown to appreciate the close fit while running or hiking in them. I might just order the mids because I can't get enough!
I have owned all the major brands of hiking shoes and Keen Targhee II are my favorites. Whether backpacking for the weekend or a mild 3 mile walk around town. Truly the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.
This is my second pair of these shoes. They are extremely comfortable. I walk 2-3 miles six times a week so I only wish the soles lasted as long as the uppers. They are comfortable and sturdy. Classic Keens.
I've had a pair for over a year now and has performed nicely. The waterproof feature has come in handy many times crossing streams. I had an issue with the rubber coming undone on my original pair and got a replacement pair with no issues.
I'll give these 3/5 for the quality waterproofing and the burly soles with good traction, if not for those positives they would have been rated 1/5 or 2/5. I WANTED to love these shoes, the toe box was working great and the footbed felt very comfy....but unless you have big bulky heels and ankles they're going to slip right off your feet. I tightened them as far as I could but still had significant slippage at the heel when walking up hills. I really wanted these to work, but the just wouldn't.
I like these, but they are a bit on the loosey goosey side for a hiking shoe I think I would try the higher "mid" boot Targhee IIs for any serious outdoor hiking. Also the tongue fit is a bit weird it is a partial tongue, so that 3/4 of your foot is securely in a "sock", and the last upper part is suddenly a tongue? I find the transition a bit strange, and for me, I prefer a fully socked, no tongue design, but this is still pretty good. Finally, I'll say I just love the Keen fit. I have a fat little hobbit foot, and the Keens fit me just right!
Granted, this shoe is very durable and looks rad. But it isn't really designed for use beyond "day hikes, weekend backpacking trips." By day five of a six day 65 mile loop in the Sawtooths, the "Secure-fit Lace Capture System" started causing bruising on the back of my heel. After being chastised by the girlfriend for going too slow I had to switch to the Chaco sandals for the final eight miles. The eVENT fabric kept the shoes dry for about the first 30 minutes of a two-hour downpour (as good as any shoe could do in that weather I suppose). They don't breath that well. All-in-all it is comfortable for day use and casual wear and a sweet looking design if you're a KEEN fan. I still wear them often...just not on the trail.
I normally wear a size 10.5 EE, so I ordered these shoes in a size 11. The 11 was way too small, so I returned them and ordered a 11.5--still too small! I tried one more time and ordered a size 12, and finally found a size that would fit my foot. The shoes are a little loose in the heal and a little "shallow" in the footbed area, but after wearing them for a week or two they began to break in and these limitations became less noticeable. The are great shoes, but be sure and order at least one full size larger than what you normally wear.
