Cutter Bones Bike - 2010 BCS

Item # CUT0060

The Cutter Bones is a shining example of less is more. Smooth lines and classic styling make the Bones at home on the gritty city streets, parked outside a bustling downtown café—or dominating your local alley cat. The bulletproof Hi-Ten steel frame and single-speed flip/flop hub keep maintenance to a minimum, while the traditional brass-riveted ergo saddle, aluminum head badge, and espresso bartape ooze grandeur. Alloy drop bars and Weimann TR18 rims keep the Bones quick and durable enough for messenger work and sexy enough for bar-hopping.

  • Kenda 25c tires offer grip on compromised pavement
  • 46 x 18 tooth gearing gets you swiftly around town without forcing you to walk the hill back home
  • 1 1/8in head tube and steel fork provide stiff and responsive handling

Bottom Line:

A quality of life issue.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

Broken Bones

By:
March 29, 2012

I am specifically writing this review to make the average, novice bike owner/purchaser aware that the Cutter frame is weak and "you do get what you pay for".
I purchased my Cutter Bones Bike off of Bonktown; I do admit, it was a steal at $250. It lasted for 6 months before the rear triangle completely bent appr. 4" out of alignment after hitting a small curb; the chain popped off the gears and grabbed the pedal thus locking up the bike and sending me into a 12ft skid. This seems like an extremely rare scenario. However, as seen in the photo, the tension placed on the chain was enough to bend the frame. The frame is cheap, "hi-ten" steal.
There is a lifetime warranty on the frame, but I have yet been able to contact Cutter Bikes; there is no phone number, email, etc. on their website.

I dunno, this sounds like a freak incident. My Bones bike has been extremely solid, and I've ridden it hard for almost 2 years. There is a contact page on their website, with a link at the very top. I've gotten great support from them regarding a bike pump that needed an O-ring.

Great Bike

By:
June 10, 2010

I got this bike a couple weeks ago. I have had everything from self built custom bikes, cheap crappy ones, and high end track bikes. This one is surprisingly great for an out of the box fixed gear. I got the 58 and I am 6' 2" and it fits perfect. I changed out a couple minor components (new saddle, new seat post, new bars, my own pedals) but rode it about 10 miles stock and it was great for the pretty low price. Cant go wrong with this bike. I would recommend this to any of my friends new to city biking or friends that are versed in it.

Cool style. Cool ride

I've got about 10 miles on the freewheel and 10 miles on the fixed cog, with my bones so far. Bike operates great in both circumstances. I agree with Mark that it does seem slightly big. I am 5' 11" and went with the 56cm. I am glad I didn't go 58.

As far as bike feel, the 18t seems great with the cog, but I might beef up the free wheel with a 16t in the future. Brake works great, as does everything else on the bike.

I personally ended up customizing mine, aesthetically. I made the following mods:

Cutter Racing Saddle (white) - Real Cyclist Item #CUT0038
Vittoria Rubino Pro 3 Tire (1 white, 1 lime) - 23 - Real Cyclist Item #VIT0033
Fi'zi:k Bar Tape (apple green) - Real Cyclist Item #FIZ0055
Blackburn Flea Front USB Light (green) - Item #BLB0037

All of these greens seemed to match the cutter logo real well.

I also added a few other items (chrome toe clips, white straps, top tube pad)

Overall, I enjoy this bike a lot. Weight is decent, it looks cool, and it is everything I need to cruise around town.

Really like this bike, set it up as my first Fixie (getting super hip, looking into v necks). The lockring on the fixed gear took some tightening so it didnt slip while slowing down or skidding, but other than that super sweet and super easy to assemble.

No complaints on this bike. Its a killer deal and a really solid piece of Steel. The frame is a bit heavy. If you are going to ride it fixed tighten the lock ring and put some lock tight on if you are having any more trouble.

Cutter Bones Bike

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
March 30, 2010

My wife and I are on Cutter bikes this year for the spring/summer bar season. We love them, and would like to thank RealCyclist for supporting domestic drinking in a day and age when most are wrapped up in the Euro scene. The bikes do run a touch on the large side, so if on the border - size down. We were suspect of the saddle being a cheapo brooks knock-off, but it is actually very comfortable and does not look cheap at all. I slapped an old Reynolds Ouzo fork on mine and it significantly lightened the bike up too. My bike needed an adjustment to the hub as it shipped a bit overtightened, so consider doing the same. Steel is real, allez, homard.

great bike, got for 225 on bonktown and this was a steal. fast bike and easy to put together, comes 90% assembled. riding it freewheel. only gripes: the front brake is a little meh and the wheels needed a bit of truing. looks sweet, going to swap out the stock bars with bullhorns. i'm 5'9" with a 32" inseam and got the 56cm and it's a perfect fit with about 1-1.5 inches of junk clearance to the top tube.

instead of buying bullhorns, you can just invert your stock bars and cut off what becomes the upper bend. just leave a little of teh upward curve. this is bascially what bullhorns are after all.

this is what i ended up doing. i originally thought i'd keep the drops on hand just in case, so i bought a set of cheap horns on ebay with a 31.8mm center diameter. they didn't fit! i measured the stock bars and they are NOT 31.8mm diameter, they're 24.7. the 31.8mm stem clamp diameter and handlebar measurements listed above are a LIE! so i flopped and chopped, and reused the existing bar tape, and they look great now. too bad i wasted 20 bucks.

Dem Bones

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
March 24, 2010

I'm digging this bike. It's a super smooth ride and it handles well. I've never owned a single-speed before, and I'm impressed by how quiet and frictionless it is. It's a classic steel frame, so it's obviously not the lightest bike out there, but it weighs a hell of a lot less than my old Schwinn commuter. The saddle is comfy, as is the gear ratio--I don't feel like I'm pedaling my heart out and going nowhere on flat rides, and I can still climb the steeper urban hills without barfing. I'm not a fan of the nylon straps on the toe clips; they're awkward and I'll probably take them off. That's just a petty complaint. All-in-all this is a solid commuter.

I would say these have a compact front triangle geometry, so it is possible. Does she have a bike currently and if so what size is it. Measure from the center of the crank bolt to the top of the seattube. If it is in the same range as the Bones which will be 52cm from center to top of seat tube then you should be good to go as these have a decently short top tube.

Bike showed up mostly assembled and was very easy to complete. Not the lightest, but it is steel and rides nice and smooth. Getting it on bonktown for 225 made it a no brainer. One detail where mine differed however was in the handlebars. Although they were drop bars, they are the traditional older style bars and do not have the flat spot that is seen in the pictures (and apparently in everyone else's pics). Not abig deal though.

Great Joy Rider and Commuter

By:
October 27, 2010

I use this bike to crank back and forth to school, run short errands, and ride home from the bar. The bike rides very smooth and quiet. I live in East TN and was worried I wouldn't be able to crank it up hills (my first single speed bike) but it is geared nicely. The bike has a nice response when you get out of the saddle and really start crankin it out to climb the hill or make the red light.

Cons:
- I threw the brake pads away after one ride and replaced them with some good ones. I am not riding fixed gear so only having one brake, it better work well.
-I had a tube blow out in the middle of the night. The rim tape is cheap and had slipped off of the spoke nipple. How it happened in the middle of the night, i dont know, but it woke me up.

For bonktown.com price of 224, I would highly recommend this bike to others.

I am 6'3" and the 60 fits like a glove.

Grabbed this off bonktown for a sweet deal. If I would of paid full price it probably would have gotten 3 stars. Wheels needed a bit of truing and the bottom bracket was horrible. It creaked and wasn't smooth at all and when I took it out the spindle had a ton of horizontal slop. Luckily I had an extra square tappered BB of much better quality lying around. I do have to say the bike is a looker though, I love the styling and for the $230.00 I paid out the door I can't complain too much.

Back in the saddle thanks to the Cutter Bones

By: Departmentofgoods.com Employee
August 16, 2010

Just got back on a bike after a long stint living in the moutains and forgetting how nice urban life can be. My wife and I only have one car so I spent some time chatting with the the bike guys at Real Cyclist and decided the steel horse with the sweet logo and leather trimmings was the way to go instead of another car. Can't be happier with the single-speed set-up for the morning/afternoon commute and frequent trips downtown for some drinks or a simple grocery run. Clean looks grab lots of attention and positive comments. Tubes that came with it were a little weak, but new ones have been solid since replacing. All-in-all you can't beat the price for a new (complete) bike!

My only complaint is the uncomfortable seat. DEFINITELY wear chamois shorts with this bike. But that was expected. It's super easy to style up, a lot of compliments, and has done a good job of flying from point A to point B. It's a keeper. I'd buy another.

This bike is great for it's intended purpose. I'm 5'5" and went with the 52cm size. It's about perfect for me. I have it set up as a fixie and it's way efficient for around Salt Lake City. I can charge up most hills without much of a problem. The gearing makes it more difficult to skid stop, but the front brake gets the job done super well. I couldn't ask for a better bike for around town that I can pound on for the price.

Already had a pretty rough fall and nothing but some scratched bar tape and some nicks that nail polish took care of. If you need to get somewhere on a budget this is it!

Easy, uncomplicated, trouble-free ridin.

You get exactly what you expect when purchase a Bones bike, Bare Bones Simplicity. One gear one brake one bike I reckon. This bike rides smooth fast and quietly. I run it coastered, sorry Chaz. I wish I could a been a Seattle Messenger but I washed up too soon on the rough streets of Columbia, SC. So if you are looking for the smooth ride of steel the clean lines of a Vintage Pekopa then the Bones foots the bill !
I have only been beating on this bike for a week. The paint seems pretty durable and the freewheel engages quick enough. The front brake and cross-stop lever seem to put the squeeze on adequately enough. The Brooks saddle knock off doesn't even feel like a punch to the taint either!
