Castelli Sottile Jacket

Item # CST0329

A new spin on an old classic. Castelli designed a classic transparent rain cape, then took it way farther. The Men's Sottile Jacket isn't just the plastic bag that you're used to seeing on racers. Castelli used a Transparent Compact waterproof membrane to make the Sottile breathable and to add stretch. Then this rain jacket got mesh side panels, a zippered side pocket, and two reflective tabs at the rear.

Bottom Line:

Simple. Well, sort of.

Pretty good jacket

Lightweight and packable (much moreso than my Pearl Izumi WXB Barrier rain jacket) and it does shed light rain (I have yet to use it in heavy rain). The fit around the body is nice and snug but I found the sleeves to be very big and loose on me so it does flap in the wind quite a bit. I also find that when I am pushing hard, I get soaking wet under the jacket so I was a bit disappointed in the breathability, although I'd suspect it is more breathable than some other rain jackets out there. Price is a bit steep in my opinion.

I've decided to send the jacket back. I've done a few more rides in dry conditions and the breathability is not to my liking. I've used the jacket for some cool descents and my jersey gets absolutely soaking wet underneath. I'm going back to my Pearl Izumi optic jacket.

Great jacket

wore jacket today..50 degrees temp with long sleeve jersey. perfect really. cut the wind and did not overheat. Was just a spin and not a hammer training ride but very comfortable. I am 6' 185. originally got the large but just too tight so returned for the xl which fit perfect. Highly recommended and looking forward to my first rain ride in jacket. Only wish might be a little longer flap in the back for spray off rear tire.

super light

This jacket works great. Keeps you dry yet breathes. It is super light tucks easily into a jersey pocket and is tough. Took a spill while wearing it and the jacket got some black asphalt marks, but didn't tear. Only complaint is the zipper is tough to get undone.

Feels like space alien skin.

The material on this jacket is very odd and very cool. Kind of like a gossamer alien membrane that stretches and weighs less than a piece of toast. I fully expected that it would not keep me dry in the Pacific Northwest drizzle, or that it would tear when I pulled on it.

After a number or rides this Sottile has become my favorite shell. I don't believe it's completely waterproof but highly water resistant. Also breathes and keeps out the wind. I stuff it in my jersey anytime there is any chance of rain.

The one "downside" is the steep price for 3 ounces of plastic. But hey! Alien skin ain't cheap. :)
