My first impression: "Man, the material in this jacket is way thinner than I pictured" - of course expecting a big, warm, thick wool hoody. Too my surprise this jacket supplies ample warmth for my use - cool weather jacket. It looks to be extremely well made - a tightly woven wool exterior with a nice waffle polartec lining. It is very well thought out with all tech jumbo in the description, plus two interior pockets and a nice waist drawstring. The fit is very true to size. I'm 6'1", 190 lbs and the large is perfect. It is fairly fitted, like others have said. There's definitely enough room for some layering but don't expect to put your down coat on under this thing. If you've got an extra spare tire or two you might want to look elsewhere. One of the best things about this jacket, the "MADE IN CANADA" tag! No Chinese crap here! Great sourcing backcountry!

I loved this hoody. After 2 years of hard use, mine is ready for retirement. I'm sad to see it's no longer available.

This instantly became my favorite jacket. I'm a sucker for wool, which helps, but it's a great jacket. Pretty stylish, warm down to about 25F, mostly wind-block. A little stiff out of the box but it's softening up quickly. Definitely not a jacket for backcountry adventures - but it's not designed to be.

I bought this jacket and it immediately became my favorite piece of clothing, hands down. My work requires me to live outside every other week year round and this jacket is with me from October thru April. I wear an Icebreaker wool base and this jacket over the top and am perfectly comfortable 90% of the time. When it gets reeeaally cold, this wool jacket is roomy enough to layer a puffy down jacket under it and then I'm good to about -20F. Of course the wool stands up well when hanging out around campfires all day too. The hood has a very roomy cut which I appreciate as well. On cold nights I will even sleep with it on as it feels like your favorite cozy blanket on the inside. My only complaint is that after a year of use, the zipper sometimes comes off track. Highly recommended!

Great jacket around town. A bit of a tight fit around the waist area if you're not a skinny guy.

This is a great looking jacket with a great fit, color (i got the brown) and hood. It is pretty warm for its weight until the "breeze" comes, if it gets windy, then you may be out of luck. My friend has the last years model and inside lining is much heavier and wind blocking, with the Siphon (this years model), if you put it up to the light you can see why it doesn't even block a breeze. So if you looking for some wind resistance, look elsewhere, but if you just want a cool looking urban Jacket this is the one.

I received this jacket for Christmas (after asking for it). It's a much slimmer fit than I expected, but the next size up is too big. Time to do some sit-ups. But I've been wearing it non stop and today some guy at a football game came up and asked me where I got my jacket. I want another!

This is a very good hoody! I'm 6'4", 185 Ibs with an athletic build. I ordered a Large in Graphite and it fits very well. It hugs my body snugly and the sleeves are the perfect length. It looks great and I receive lots of compliments on it. Its also very warm and well built. My only quips with it is the hood is a little short and the inner cuffs in the sleeves are a bit bulky. I'm a tall guys so the hood may fit others a bit better and inner cuff isn't that big of a deal. I bought mine on Steep & Cheap for $89 and I'm pleased with what I paid. I wouldn't pay over $100 unless money isn't an option.

Not great at breaking wind, but fantastic otherwise. good fit, nice hood, and I love the inside pockets. Those are what make this a true keeper for me: I can stick gloves, hat, wallet, keys, in there, and all of a sudden I don't Really need a backpack for my commute.

Love this jacket. I've got long arms and the sleeves are perfect. I love the athletic fit of this jacket. I've worn it out hiking, as a casual jacket and even pulled it off going out to a nice dinner. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that it doesn't keep the wind out.

This hoody is perfect for casual wear. It's comfortable, super warm, and sheds light snow like a champ (the wool coating does its job nicely).
Another great thing about the wool: it does not retain odors at all. I have warn this by two bonfires and there is no woodsmoke smell to it.

I love this jacket, same great cut as the Siphon Street hoodie...which I wear daily. This jacket is SHARP. Can look classy or can handle the bars, love the versatility. I haven't done anything active in this jacket yet, but its been awesome around town and I'll have it for some time! Wish I had gotten a Graphite one before they ran out of my size :(

If you're looking for something to go from the car to the mall, this is perfect. It looks really sharp, and the material is very warm. However, if you're looking to spend any time outside, get something else. Even the lightest breeze cuts right through it and erases any heat. I wore this the other day in 45deg weather with 5mph gusts and had to put a merino wool zip-neck under it to keep from freezing. I have a couple heavy cotton hoodys that would've been just fine. This is a very sharp looking jacket, but it's not made for serious outdoor use.

I am six foot and a buck ninety, I wanted an XL but the XXL was the only size left. I decided to go with it. When I first put the jacket on surprisingly it fit very well for being larger than I wanted. Plenty of room and you can cinch the bottom of the jacket so it does not look as wide at the waist. Great length and gives me room to wear another layer underneath when the temp drops. I really like the high zipper so I can tuck my chin in the jacket when it is zipped all the way up.

I absolutely love this jacket. Very warm, athletic fit, incredibly durable, and very comfortable. I love that I never have to worry about running in to anybody else wearing the same jacket. This jacket gets noticed by the North Face Denali guys . Another bonus: it's made in Canada, rather than a sweat-shop in Asia. I got mine for Christmas last year and my wife made over $150.00 for it. Just noticed it's down to roughly $55.00 now - what a deal! Buy two!

i would get this jacket. especially at the prices they are at today. I paid way more for mine and would do it again, but at the prices today i'm half tempted to buy another.

I'm 6'4" 250 lbs and the XXL is great. I'm really diggin this hoody for sure. I'm not one for getting cotton hoodies because I'm anti-cotton I guess, I like versatile materials and wool/fleece is that. This hoody definitely delivers on the expectation that it will hold up to the elements and that it will also just look good. I'm happy to say that this hoody comes through on both those things.

I got the graphite but I'm about to put in a purchase for the coffee as well, especially with these sales and the hoody being 60% off. Man! Gotta love BC.com and their products! No doubt!

I bought this for my husband because his other favourite hoody was just plain worn out. He enjoys wearing this hoody more than the last one. It is warm even on very chilly days without being bulky or sloppy, and allows a layer or two to fit underneath. It does have an athletic cut, but it seemed (at least in this case) true to size. My husband is 5' 9", about 155-160 lbs.- I bought the medium, and it fits very well.

Chill hoody... Great material inside and out. The length in the arms fit perfect, although the length in the torso was a little short for me...hence the 4 star rating. I am somewhat taller though, so that probably plays a significant role. Overall, the hoody is super warm, and I love the look. Awesome product!

Have tested in San Francisco with all microclimes. I am waiting for winter to strike for a real test run. The jacket fuses wool and polartec amazing well. The jacket is light to wear. The jacket color will probably result in cleanings more than if it were a darker color.

The jacket does not pack as well as other fabrics which is to be expected. I see it more as a sweater and hoody then a light packable tech jacket, which is fine for when I am sedentary or walking in the Pacific fog and wind off the surf.

I suspect that if I were more active in this jacket, hiking in the snow, I would be sweating: it would be nice if the jacket came with pit zips for more versatility. Otherwise a great hoody and jacket: cant wait for the colder weather.

I loved this jacket. It is stylish and cozy! I am 6.3 and 180lbs and originally got the Large size. The jacket had a nice athletic fit; however, wool shrinks and I don't want to pass the jacket down to my girlfriend! I returned the L jacket and requested an XL one instead. Based on the sizing chart the difference is very small, so that should do just fine, even after a few washing cycles! -CT

I ordered this and found that the medium fit very well (150#, 6' 1"), but I did not like the way it git. The jacket had a nice fleece liner, but I still found to wool to be itchy.

This an excellent hoody for both everyday wear and winter adventures. The wool outer is actually surprisingly soft for wool and the interior liner is superbly comfortable on the skin. The fit is very trim - I'm 5'8", 155lbs with an athletic build and the medium is spot on for sizing with enough room underneath for a t-shirt or other light to medium light layers. All in all - an excellent jacket!

I'm using it here in Afghanistan. Light enough to pack, nice and warm, even at night. The "cobra" hood leaves room for all my headgear. It's got a very stylish cut almost has a tailored appearance and I have gotten several questions about where to get one. Like most backcountry.com jackets - there's a slimness to the cut - if you've a beer belly or very very broad shoulders I'd imagine it would be a tight fit - Im 5-9, 168lbs and the medium fits me perfectly. As far as the price -I've no problem paying good money for good gear.

This is quickly becoming my favorite jacket to wear around town. Awesome material and great looks means I get compliments all over and technical details (the inner cuff is a nice touch) means that I can use it on the slopes. It fits just like everyone else has said: a little snug and it could be longer in the torso, but it has long sleeves and a hood that fits rather well. I'm 6'1 155lbs, and the medium is a little short, would probably go for the large next time.

I really like the fit of this jacket. I have a pretty good ape index and usually struggle with sizes due to arm length. An extra large is typically too baggy for me and the sleeve length in a large is typically too short. The Siphon is a perfect compromise. I purchased the large and it has a nice slim fit and a long sleeve length. Great fashionable look with a hood that hides your blood shot eyes after an evening of throwing back a few.

Wife had to get one too in the cranberry. Now her friends want one too. It actually is a great looking jacket on her.

i usually wear a medium, but am afraid after reading the reviews for this jacket.5' 5" 140 lbs, slim but broad shoulders. any advice?

This is hands down my favorite piece of clothing. it's for spring skiing, climbing, biking around portland, the coffee shop, at the concert, and everything in between. It is on me every day because its versatile, warm, durable, and looks steezy.
I was a little worried at first when the wool started to pill around the cuffs, but it has held up great to a full season of skiing and climing, plus sleeping in it inbetween

As long as it's not about to rain or too cold (below ~30), this is the one. I like the understated look and color. I got the coffee, and have gotten a number of compliments. I'm 6'3", 230, and XL fits perfectly.

Wind comes through it somewhat. Think of it as a wool version of a fleece. With a tight-weave merino top underneath (Ibex, Icebreaker) it's a pretty warm combination.

Haven't taken the thing off since I got it in the mail! I like my clothes to fit well, and the fit on this thing is perfect! Per the pictures, I expected the graphite to be grey, but it's really almost black. I wouldn't pay full price for this thing though, just a bit overpriced unless you can snag it on sale.

Im 5'5", slim medium build but with big arms and wide shoulders. Should I get a medium? It seems like this coat is pretty form fitting, I don't want it to be too tight, it would be nice to fit a layer underneath it. Any suggestions?

This hoody is awesome. It is the warmest hoody that I have ever owned and with thick wool material it can keep out small amounts of water and the wind. The best part about this hoody is the hood. It is big yet it doesn't slide over your eyes. If you are wanting to up your hoody experience try it out you won't regret it

This jacket is sweet! Im 5'11" 195ish athletic build and the XL fits perfect! I tried the large but it was a bit short and tight. Haven't been able to really test it out yet in the elements, but for wearing around casually I love it. Oh and stylish I might add!!!

Great jacket for around town, very comfortable. Slimmer fit, I am 5'10 180 and a large fits me perfectly.

I bought a Siphon jacket last fall and loved it, so I bought another one last month. I was disappointed to find that they've changed the design a bit. The new jacket has a thinner fleece lining and doesn't block the wind as well. The exterior wool appears to be about the same as my original. It's unfortunate, I really love my original jacket but probably won't keep the new one.

Love this piece. Read all the reviews and I was sold. The wool looks quite classy for a techy piece of gear. the backcountry logos add nice flair and the fit is just fitted enough for my liking without being too tight. I'm 6'4 230 and the XL works well. Perhaps a little short if your torso is long though

I couldn't disagree more with the "Just no" review. No, I'm not a backcountry employee, but I obviously can't prove that. I have the earlier version of the jacket, which I prefer over this newer version. But they are both great. I've gotten this version for my brother who loved my jacket, then I got it for his girlfriend who loved my brothers jacket. So I've had a chance to compare the two.

I think the "Just no" poster is missing the point by comparing it to the Arcteryx Gamma MX/Sigma SV. This is not a techie jacket, it's styalistic with a techie soul. The exposed and large stiching, raw look of the wool and "raw-edged" hood brim are what gives this jacket its style. The techie side is worked in with the narrow-ish fit and materials to a degree.

Great jacket if it fits you right (narrow and long). Add this up to another winner from backcountry's brand. I prefer my Shift Welder Hoody over my Arcteryx Gamma MX and my Siphon over the Arcteryx Gothic or Regent (which I don't own).

I bought this jacket on S&C @ ~60% off. It was a great buy. The only negative is that I was expecting a higher wool content. The one I received is 28% wool, 27% polyester, 25% cotton, 8% nylon, 8% acrylic. Now, I will say that in CO snowfalls it stayed dry and the outer surface dried quickly. Its very warm. Its wind resistant...you'll feel some penetration above 20-25 mph gusts. Very fitting. Long torso and arms. Love the hood...good seal with high neck-line...although a pull cord for the hood would be choice. Very happy with my first Backcountry.com piece.

i purchased the siphon wool hooded jacket based on the reviews i read, and with the intent of using it as an 'everyday' cold-weather jacket to wear on campus, around town, etc. i'm 5'9", 140 lbs and purchased a small, which fit nice and slim without being too short. it irks me that so many brands have removed the hoods from their jackets, so the siphon's hood was a selling point for me. i was also pleased to find the jacket to be made in canada, but that about sums up the pros. for the cons: the "wool blend" material was surprisingly uncomfortable and abrasive. it's presence on the unnecessarily protruding inseams irritated my skin (no merino wool here). the jacket was about as wind-resistant as a thin fleece, and i found myself chilled on a 30-35 degree windy day. furthermore, i purchased the light gray one pictured above but received one much of a much darker hue which must have been from a different lot or something. at an SAC price the siphon wool hoodie may be worth your money but at one-hundred-forty bones it simply was not worth mine.

Pretty much the greatest jacket I've owned. Never had a problem with the cold (although I do live in California) and the look is right on. I've had it for about a year and it still looks like new. In fact, I just got a North Face polar-tec and have barely worn it since this one is always right next to it. Only downsides are some itchyness from the wool and poor wind stopping, but that is to be expected from a blend like this. Don't let the price scare you, this coat is some shralpin' shiz.

I'm 6'3 250lbs 38in waist x-football players build and this is the best fitting jacket i have bought in a while. Sleeves are long enough, great mixed material Fleece/Wool. Athletic cut perfect for layering or kicking it at the bar. I love it!!

I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas in the graphite. The true color is darker than the picture and the goat symbol is grey not black like the picture shows. Like others have said, its a bit of a slim fit. Nevertheless...he LOVES it, and I love it on him. Such a great look on a guy!

I purchased this jacket before it became known as the Siphon and it has quickly become one of my favorite jackets. The cut is extremely athletic (which is something not a lot of companies seem to get). I am 6'3" 195lbs and the Large is perfect. The sleeves are long (another bonus) and have a nice stretchy cuff on the inside of them to keep the cold out. It is very wind resistant, the outer shell is wool so yeah it might shed a little water or snow, but its definitely not the jacket to be wearing when there is a lot of it coming down.

I wanted a stylish full zip jacket that I could also wear for some mild outdoor activities like running or cross country skiing in the winter and this jacket fits the bill so far.

It has a pretty perfect fit, I'm 5' 6", 130lbs. and its not tight but just right. Could be a little longer.... but it's alright.

The overall comfort and feel and look of this jacket is where it really shines. On the inside you have a thermal like synthetic material that feels nice even with a tee on. And there are soft cuff liners that are comfortable and help keep out the cold. The standard waist sinch cords in the pockets also help with this and are very easy to engage.

The hood has a very solid seal and its not your typical loose style hoody. When you zip it up you got immediate full coverage, but there are no sinches there anyway so this is good. If it's windy and your hat is not cutting the bill, the hood makes for a very welcome extra cover.

The jacket as I mentioned, has a real slick look. It's got some pretty interesting seems and was definitely made for style. I wear this thing in the house when I don't want to crank the heat, and out on the town without a care because I know it looks good.

The only reason I didn't give this jacket 5 stars is because of one annoying feature. When I try to zip up the jacket all the way (with the hood), it 4 out of 5 times gets stuck on the soft zipper guard flap and I have to futz with it to get the zipper past. This can be pretty annoying when its rippin cold and you have to stop for a minute or two just to get the hood up.

Even with that annoying feature, it's still a keeper and it's easily become one of my favorite all around garments. I got a pretty sweet deal on SAC too for under $100. Keep an eye out!

I was excited for a nice wool layering piece that could do double duty as a nice looking jacket so I don't have to always wear a technical softshell. However, the collar on this thing is very poorly-conceived. It goes up to my mouth when zipped up fully, but is tight like a turtle neck; consequently, I would have had to leave it open down to the bottom of my neck constantly, which just makes it look like a silly fashion sweater for women. Also, the raw edge on the hood doesn't look so hot. I'm 6'0 175 lbs, and the fit was pretty slim, so keep that in mind. Overall good quality of construction, however, just a very impractical fit.

I'm 5'11" with a slim build, and it fits perfectly. The sleeves are a little on the long side, but fear not--not too long. The cupped sleeves inside really help make this jacket keep me warm down to temps in the upper 40s(haven't tried lower temps yet) with just a long sleeve cotton shirt underneath and khakis.

The jacket is very light for the warmth it provides; its lightness I think keeps it from making you feel stuffy. The hood was one of my primary reasons for buying it, as I have water-resistant clothing, but none with hoods up until this point. The hood covers my whole head and then some--the zip provides coverage for my neck, and the front of the hood extends a couple of inches to give my face some extra shelter.

The wool blend works pretty well in my opinion--the inside is extremely comfortable and is different from the texture of the outside, so don't worry about itch. Also, it's machine washable, so no need to worry about taking it to the dry clean.

As for looks, this jacket is aesthetically more appealing than I originally expected. It looks very nice, unique, sturdy, and well made. The collar has great style and does not droop down easily. Even the goat logo blends in so weel(for the grayish color); it is stylishly present yet subtle.

I have nothing bad to say about this jacket--although I was able to get it for 30% off; depending on your budget, you may have to think twice about whether you want to spend $180 on it. It ranks as one of my most satisfactory purchases in a long time.

SIZE UP!

I had high hopes for this jacket—it looked sharp in the pictures and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Now that I've got it, though, I feel betrayed. (How many of these reviews were written by Backcountry employees? I don't expect anyone to answer that.) I like the fit and inner cuffs, but that's it. My biggest gripe with the jacket is its finish quality. This is hugely important to me for any garment, but especially one in this price class (i.e. premium). When I saw that this piece was made in Canada, I felt confident that it'd be made with care. But what gives? I could've assembled it better. Loose threads galore (including gray outer threads inside the black mesh zipper backing), sloppy stitching for miles, a zipper that's hard to engage... and don't even get me started on the "raw-edged" hood brim. I don't know what the designers were thinking with that, but leaving the fabric unfinished like that makes it look like I put the jacket together from office carpet. (The graphite color actually looks a lot like office carpet.) I only have one other jacket from Canada, the Acr'Teryx Gamma MX, and that thing is a work of art. Hell, even my $15 fake Arc'Teryx Sigma SV from China is better made than this. I'm not kidding. Hugely disappointed and will never buy Backcountry's house brand again. The only reason I don't return it is because then I'd be out lost $15 on shipping with nothing to show for it but bitterness. Definitely not worth the $89.30 I paid on SAC and If I had paid full price I would've wept when I saw it.

Not the blend. I wish I would have seen the "wool blend" described below. But my jacket has significantly more wool. The outer lining is very soft. I REALLY like the small liners inside the arms around the wrist to block the cold from coming in, GREAT feature.

It's a warm jacket, I wore it over a polo in 20F weather and was good for a few minutes. So it's not a winter jacket, but should be great for 30F and above.

The wool blend I just got is as follows:
42% Wool
37% Polyester
16% Nylon
5% Polyurethane

So, it's better, but I would have liked more wool.
