Arc'teryx Spotter Long Short - Men's - 2008 BCS
Durable cotton canvas construction makes the Arc'teryx Men's Spotter Long Shorts tough enough to last seasons of agro approaches and all-day bouldering sessions. Arc'teryx gave the Spotter Long Shorts a knee-length inseam and gusseted crotch to help you move freely whether you're sending on the small stone or roping up for a sport route.

photo not quite accurate

The quality of these shorts really is impressive, but a couple things to know - first, the "Carbide" color looks like an off-white or tan in the photo, but it's really a khaki green. Second, the shorts aren't quite as long as they appear in the photo. They are still on the longer side, but not as long as you probably think.
Burly and nice at the same time
July 18, 2012
These are definitely my new favorite shorts. They're plenty burly, but not so much that they're too hot. They fit well enough for climbing and look good enough to wear to work. My only complaint is that the back pockets are a bit low, so my wallet rests in an uncomfortable sport when sitting, but that's no so big of a deal.
Howdy--could you please tell me what the inseam and/or outseam
Howdy--could you please tell me what the inseam and/or outseam is on these? Thanks!

These are a great product. The cut is roomy with plenty of cargo space (i.e. pockets) with out being "Cargo Shorts". I am tired of things flopping around in the big side pockets of typical cargo shorts. These spotters have all the pocket space I need and still look like real clothing. They are made of very high quality material and are comfortable for multiple day wear between washing if you don't go "commando".
well built short

seem to be of excellent quality...not as long as I was expecting when I ordered them, and i almost returned them without even trying them on....tried them on, and thought they seemed really good...wore for a weekend, and determined probably the second best shorts I own next to Kuhl....ordered the nubian brown in 38, and fit is excellent, and color is spot on
Would you say these shorts are a just replacement for the discontinued
Would you say these shorts are a just replacement for the discontinued Gamut line? My 2 pairs of Gamut shorts are on their way out and I need some replacements!

The Spotter is the closest Arc'teryx short to the old Gamut. I think they fit better, esp. in the crotch, and the fleece lined waistband is super nice.

Best shorts ever

I have 2 pairs of these now. Good everyday wear. Smart looking and tough built with deep pockets which hold everything without looking bulky. I find the fit perfect and highly recomend these shorts.

These are my new favorite shorts, they have usurped the top spot in the shorts drawer from my Patagonia Shop Shorts. The fleece lining and fit are awesome. I'm 6'-5" & 200lbs, the 38 fit me perfectly. I cant wait to get home from work, put these on, and get outside.

I'm a short, stocky guy and I often have problems buying shorts that aren't too long or too baggy for me. When I came across these on sale at my local store I didn't hold out much hope for them but my Arc'teryx addiction said try them on. Long shorts are almost always a no-way for me.
I'm incredibly glad I listened. Yes, they're long but the fit/silhouette is cut slim enough that they appear shorter and don't give me two tents around the knees. The quality is as good as everything else Arc'teryx makes and they've become my favorite shorts that I wear out hiking and in drinking. Especially love the chamois lined waist, so incredibly comfortable.

i have never bought a pair of pants bigger than a 32 and there is no way i can fit into these shorts size 32. they look really well made tho.
Their sizing is a little off...
August 30, 2010
As others have said, carbide is actually more of a faded green-brown color and the fit is a little tight. I normally wear a size 33 waist short, but in these, I had to go up to a 36" for them to actually get around my thighs (and I'm skinny 6'2", 197lbs). The 36" inch waist though fits decently well, if not a shade looser than I would really like -- I don't need a belt, but a little bit more and I would.
They are longer than the typical shorts you see by North Face and REI, on me they come down to the middle of my knees. As with the other Arc'Teryx gear, it fits well and feels like it was made to last.

Got mine in the mail and they rock! Durable material, comfy mole-skin around the brim if you roll commando, and long but not too long. Durability of Carharts and style/comfort of Arc'teryx. Tried mine on at REI and ordered from Backcountry for about 35 bucks less in a cooler color. Sweet deal! Higly recommend them. Wore them yesterday, day before and probably tomorrow. My new summer digs. :-)

These shorts are great, i just recieved mine and wore them for a day and they fit awesome. They are plenty long (I am 6'2") they fall just below the knee. There is also plenty of room in the crotch as well. I cant wait to wear these more often, I might even need to buy another pair.
Great Bouldering/Sport Climbing Shorts
February 5, 2010
I've been climbing for 20 years and have gone through more climbing clothes than I can remember. Most of the clothes I seem to use for climbing were designed for surfers, painters, or people who like to carry excessive amounts of cargo in numerous pockets. so I bought these because they were non-cargo shorts that weren't too short or too long and are made of a durable material. I also liked the cut and stitching. Now that I have these, they are the only pair of shorts I want to climb in. They're comfortable, look and feel like they are designed for climbing, and don't restrict my legs.
I'd highly recommend these for any serious boulderer or sport climber. I'm even thinking about getting a second pair in a different color.
Depends on your build

I have seen the fit being poor in the other reviews but I personally really like these shorts. I am 34 waist, 165 pounds, 5'11" and they fit loosely but not baggy. I actually wish they were a bit longer and roomier but I was satisfied overall with how they fit. They are just below my knees by about 1-2 inches and are great for hiking/backpacking. The chamois lined waist is soft and the seams are burly as hell all over the shorts. Hopefully for this cost, they last quite a while.
Not long, a little tight
June 30, 2009
Up-front disclosure: I returned these because the fit was poor.
I'm a tall guy (6'4") and these hit several inches above my knee. They are also tight and constricted my movement. In short: the opposite of the product description above.
Um, a small crotch
June 23, 2009
These shorts don't fit too well. They are great in the waist, plenty of room in the seat and the leg room is ample. However, when it comes to the crotch, these shorts are super uncomfortable. They are very shallow in that are and thus very constricting. I would not recommend these.
