Tight & quite thin

I bought this shirt for my husband, who normally wears a medium in t-shirts (for a fitted look) or large in button down shirts. This shirt was so tight on his biceps and chest, he was afraid he was going to rip the shirt before he could get it off. The fabric is quite thin - when held up to the sunlight was almost see through. I offered to exchange for an XL in this shirt, as he liked the color a lot, but he declined due to the cut of the large. He said " the large is so small, I'm pretty sure the XL would also be too small"
