ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1 Tent: 1-Person 3-Season

Item # ALM0046

There are some serious benefits to tenting alone. For one, a single-person tent weighs a lot less than a two-person tent. You also don't have to worry about getting steam-rolled at four AM or warding off your homesick tentmate's wandering hands. At under four pounds, the Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 Tent barely affects the scales, but offers heavy-duty protection against bugs and wet weather. All-mesh walls guarantee ventilation during muggy summer nights, while the urethane-coated, seam-sealed fly blocks precipitation. Two aircraft-grade aluminum poles set up with simple clips and provide strong, lightweight stability.

Bottom Line:

Sometimes it pays to sleep alone.

Hey Mark,

I highly doubt it, these 1-person tents really are one person and maybe a pack. Go with a lightweight 2 person tent if you want room for yourself and gear because even most lightweight 2 person tents really are better used as 1 person with gear rather than 2 people and no gear.

AMAZING

I was on a back-country trail crew in alpine/sub-alpine zones in Colorado and spent over 100 days in this tent over the summer. I love everything about it. Very water proof. Solid in strong winds. Highly recommended and its cheap!

The provided stuff sack is ~19.5" long and ~7.5" in diameter.

The tent, fly and footprint (sold separately) fit into the sleeping bag compartment of my Ether 60 w/ a Marmot Neverwinter Long, a medium down pillow, and a Thermolite Reactor Extreme liner in a medium compression bag w/ room to spare. Better use of space to stuff it in any available dead spaces in your pack and strap the poles externally/shove in an external pocket IMO, and saves a bit of weight to boot.

I love the simplicity of this tent! 2 main aluminum poles and 1 small pole, freestanding. Easy to set up up and take down, simple rain fly. You can't go wrong with this tent!

These are freestanding and don't need to be staked out to setup.

However, when dealing with winds and weather stakes are still a good idea.

Shockingly Good

By:
December 4, 2010

I was extremely impressed by this tent. Its tiny, and I was worried because the fly doesn't quite cover the very bottom of the tent, but my last camping trip included a night on a fairly exposed ridge in a wind/rain storm and it didn't let a single drop of water in once it had been set up. Its small enough that I was able to fit this PLUS my (admittedly very small) thermarest and down sleeping bag into the bottom compartment of my backpack.

My Thermarest Trail Lite Long fits w/ a bit of space to spare. My pack won't fit inside along w/ me unless I use it as a very uncomfortable pillow, but the vestibule seems large enough for it, just wish they made a footprint that would cover the ground under the vestibule as well as the tent.

Great Value , Seam Sealer is needed

By:
October 14, 2010

I purchased the 2p version of this tent and even though I loved most every aspect of it I ended up returning it.

There is a ton of value packed into their products. I like the overall quality construction, rainfly clipped in for easy on/off, light weight for the price.

I do not like that they used their seam tape directly over the velco that is used to connect the rainfly to the tent poles. The water just gets on the outside stitching then absorbs into the velcro then drips directly on top of you. I contacted the company a few times and explained the issue with this design and even though they seemed concerned they just stated that have not heard of any other complaints and recommended seam sealant. I wish they would have made the fly without the velcro attachments. I now look for tents that have 100% waterproofing in those areas or like my latest Big Agnes Fairview doesn't even come with them which works fine for me.

Great tent but needs attention on the rainfly. Should be a cheap fix though, just pick up some seam sealer and test it out before you go on a 3 day coast trip.

I own the 2man version, which is practically the same length and I assure you that it is longer than 5 feet. The length of the floor is 86" or 7'2"

On Amazon someone says it's actually 86" long, not 66. So sholloman, you can confirm that it's truly only 66" long? You own one of these?

Little Perfect

By:
June 7, 2010

I am a huge fan of ALPS Mountaineering because of the price, but most of all the quality and performance. I just purchased this tent for a 3 day, 50 mile hike and I couldn't have been more pleased with this tent. In the picture the Zephyr is the tent closest, and the further one is a MSR Hubba tent. The MSR Hubba runs about $285 and is just about the same as the Zephyr ins every way except it is almost double the price. The Zephyr never took me more than 1 minutes to set up, it offers a full mess upper structure for warm nights and star gazing with the optional wind, snow, and rain guard. There is a pocket on the inner side, and also a bonus small 6inch by 6inch mesh hammock to store a book, light, or what ever you want. I am 6.1" and I felt very comfortable in this tent with room to stretch and enough room to change clothing. The weight of this tent is unnoticeable, my only complaint is that I wish the it packed down just a little smaller. I bought this on steepandcheap for about $80 shipped and it simply was the best buy possible. You really cant go wrong with the Zeephyr, ALPS Mountaineering has proven themselves time and time again with the best prices and great quality products.

Does the fly sheet open on separate sides (zippered?) so that you can bring in a breeze or get out of a wind or avoid a one-sided rain while still regulating interior temperature. Being totally covered under a flysheet can be uncomfortable.

As you're looking @ the tent head on, the fly opens on the right side & turns 90 degrees left @ the top of the zipper.

Good little tent.

By:
May 29, 2010

This was my first backpacking tent, have done a few multi-day trips in it and am impressed with all features. It's simple to set up but the instructions are lacking. Spent a day during a rainstorm in Olympic National park and didn't get wet at all after digging a drainage ditch around the sides. You could get a tent a little lighter but not for the money. All in all a good buy that I recommend.

Not too Shabby

By:
July 9, 2008

Neat little tent, quality seems pretty good. Lots of little features (small gear loft, small window in vestibule, vent on rain fly). So obviously lots of value. Weight is pretty much on and it includes the guy out lines and all of the tent stakes.

Glad to pay less than a c-note for what the big boys are asking $200 for.

Although the set up is pretty self explanatory some more detailed instructions would be welcome. They are vague to say the least.

This may seem like a stupid question but I just came back from a very wet camping trip. So here goes, IS THIS WATERPROOF??? Especially on the bottom?

Yeah, polyurethane coated nylon = waterproof generally speaking. Your "wet" trip is probably attributable as much to condensation as it was to rain. When humidity is high outside the tent, it won't breathe well. This tent should however breathe well since it's got mesh walls.
