ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad

Item # ALM0012

ALPS Mountaineering gave the Comfort Series Air Pad a slew of features to ensure you sleep comfortably and stay on your pad all night. This inflatable pad includes an open-cell foam interior for increased insulation and faster self-inflation. Just open the valves and let it sit. A few puffs of air is all that's needed to finish the job. ALPS Mountaineering added PVC dots to the bottom of the Comfort Series Air Pad to keep it in place on your tent's floor. They also included a brushed top fabric that keeps you from slipping off in the middle of the night.

Bottom Line:

Never again wake up and wonder where your sleeping pad went.

I see that the pad is recommended for summer camping. Does this

I see that the pad is recommended for summer camping. Does this mean it is not insulated? I need a pad that can keep me comfy down to at least freezing

Nice pad

This pad has a lovely sueded top that really sets it apart from other squeaky, slippery pads. It isn't nearly as bulky as I expected, based on other reviews, but like the other reviewers I found it amazingly comfortable.

Long version

By:
September 8, 2008

I bought the long version. Its big, bigger than I need (I'm only 6ft). But quite comfortable. Rolls up quickly and easily(not sure about the review that said it takes 15 minutes to get the air out, it squeezes right out when you roll it up). I have a Therm-a-rest Ridge Rest for lightweight camping, but this is great for car camping, canoeing, short hikes to camping, etc... If the regular size was available I would have gotten that. Make sure this will fit in your tent, it doesn't fit in my 2 man tent(74x74) but two fit quite well in my 3 man tent(90x60).

Fantastic ! ! !

Our family bought the Long (25x77x2) size for a 3-night/4-day kayak trip at Desolation Sound. The rolls fit just fine in the hatches of our kayaks, or strapped to the top behind. Two of them did overlap in a 2-man tent, but my wife said she has never slept so well on a camping trip, and the extra length was great for my sons who are both over 6'2". Deflating was no problem. Only had to roll up once to slip it easily back in the storage bag. Back in Kansas now planning where to use them next.

Happy medium

You can call me a sally, but as I approach 30 I have been finding that my closed cell foam mat has been doing little in the way of providing comfort or warmth anymore so I upgraded to this sleeping pad. It rolls down to the same size or smaller than my old mat (it does weigh a little more) but inflates to 4x the thickness. No more sore hips before a day of rock climbing! I like the 2 different textured sides, the rubberized dots do reduce the pad's ability to travel if you shift at night. My two complaints are pretty minimal, but firstly are the included 'compression' straps. They are made of elastic and therefore do little to further compress the roll and will inevitably stretch. Second is the included stuff sack, I would prefer a tighter fit just because it does hang on the outside of my pack where I want things neat and trim. Oh, the included repair kit is a plus. If you are serious about hiking, you might look for something smaller and lighter. But if you are like me and do a healthy mix of car camping too, then I would recommend this pad.

Excellent

I bought the long pad mainly because of width. I'm only 5'7" so the length was overkill but I usually find myself half on the ground with most other pads so the width was priority. I carried it through the Adirondacks for 3 days and though it's a little on the heavy side, I was super comfortable and toasty warm when the temps dipped below freezing at night. I had no issues fitting it inside my Hammerhead 2.

Suitable for beginning

It really depends on what type of backpacking you're into, but if you're trying to save space then i would recommend something else. It is well-made, inflates independently, is comfortable and provides adequate warmth. However, i purchased it when i first started backpacking and now that I'm turning semi-minimalist I am realizing that the rolled size and weight are a bit much. Don't get me wrong, it's a great pad, just depends on what you'll be using it for. I'll be replacing it with the Thermarest Neo Air that comes out next month.

Excellent night sleep.

Wow. Very comfortable sleeping pad. Don't plan on carrying this one on the trail, unless it is the only thing you are bringing. I used mine the first time, and have not rolled it back up. It is hard to get back in the bag. If your tent is not as long as this pad, don't plan on folding the edge over on the end because it is pretty stiff. I usually wake up all the time while camping, not on this pad. Zzzzzzz.

Happy back

By:
October 20, 2010

I bought this pad to use on a week-long bike tour. We tent-camped each night after riding 45-80 miles a day. I have had serious back problems so I was worried about my comfort, but I slept well. Like other reviewers have noted, it's big- this pad would not work if you are backpacking. But I thought it was easy to inflate, deflate, and pack around with my other gear. I'm very pleased with its performance and comfort.

Great service despite disappointment...

By:
June 23, 2010

We purchased this air mattress because it sounded so comfortable and it said "Made in USA". When we got it, however, the tag said "Made in China". We want to support "local" (at least continental) retailers and manufacturers, so we did not even open these, we just contacted the company to find out if there are *any* of this type in the warehouse made in the US (when I contacted ALPS, they'd said that there were in the process of switching all manufacturing to China so some might still be available in some warehouses). There were not. The folks in customer service were most helpful and kept their word in finding the info and returning my call when they said they would. I have no idea if the product is good or not, but the service is great!
