66 North Iceland Glymur Softshell Jacket - Men's

Item # SNI0068

Zip up the 66 North Iceland Glymur Softshell Jacket and jump on the softshell bandwagon. There's a reason everyone's wearing softshells these days. Polartec Power Shield softshell stretches four-ways, wicks sweat, and breathes like crazy, which makes the Glymur great for ski tours, snowshoeing, or hiking in cold weather. This material also blocks 98% of wind and is extremely abrasion and water resistant, so go ahead and drop into those trees. 66 North concentrated on the details to keep you comfortable when you're working hard in the backcountry. Vent-thru pockets keep you cool, articulated elbows provide unrestricted movement, seamless shoulders eliminate irritation from a pack, and reach-high sleeves prevent the torso from riding up.

Bottom Line:

66 North Iceland's softshell gem.

Do not pay full retail for this jacket

For the fit, I'm 5'9", 138lbs with a very athletic build (38-39" chest, 29 waist) and I ordered a medium

The bad:
At $315, this would have been a rip off (I paid less than half that). The 2 part zipper system only really worked well for the top zipper because the bottom zipper kept getting stuck at the bottom not allowing me to unzip the jacket completely. There was extra metal left over from the zipper that was actually quite sharp and kept jabbing into my chin when fully zipped. There was extra stitching hanging from some seams. The lining in the jacket is quite coarse and can become uncomfortable when not wearing a long sleeve shirt. A very strange feature was that the elbows are not articulated, but the forearms are......???? This must have been an manufacturing error because I cannot see any point in that.

The good:
The athletic fit is one of the better I've tried on but still didn't fit because of my gym habits (was irritating my pits with a baselayer on). The material seems very tough and the main zipper looks to be water resistant. The length of the sleeves was very close to perfect which almost never happens (very small amount of wrist exposure when reaching over head). It is a very sharp looking jacket and has high pockets that remain operational when using a pack and can also be used for venting.

Overall, I could only recommend getting this jacket if you don't workout and don't pay full price.

I cannot comment on the performance because the fit was uncomfortable. Hope this helps the bc.com community

It's different

I give it four stars for being well-made, close-fitting, and sharp-looking. Ultimately, though, I didn't keep it. At 5-10 and 140 or less, most Smalls are too large for me. There are some MH garments that fit pretty well, and the Arc Tau and Atom LT, but that's about it. The Glymur fit closer than any of them, mostly in a good way. The material has a nice stretch and I didn't really feel constricted. But it's definitely a tight fit and I can see why many people would size up. I wouldn't think of wearing anything other than a thin layer underneath. This isn't a winter coat by any means, but an outer layer for mildish weather or high output activities, or a midlayer. I was disappointed that the inner polyester lining wasn't softer. At times it seemed a little harsh and the seams that create the articulated elbow irritated my bare arms. Since it's not a heavy duty winter garment on its own I would want to wear it over a short-sleeved shirt sometimes, and I couldn't get around the seams bothering me. Pockets are only the two high-set chest ones, so not convenient for casual wear. Well made, but just not for me. I also tried the hooded version and found it a little tighter fitting through the underarms, although the lining seemed a bit softer (perhaps an illusion; I don't know if the material is exactly the same or not).
